Could a dev or knowledgeable person confirm the following please:
- The new character generator does not work with SM2 cards - yes you can enable fast characters but I've been unable to sculpt properly on SISI.
- We will be unable to log in to eve if we do not change our avatars this week.
For those of us with SM2 video cards I'm worried that I will be forced to leave a long skill training and simply not log on to eve until I can afford a new computer.
Is this the case?

Not true, the worst thing that will happen is that you get stuck with the generic placeholder character (no confirmation about how long you will have to create the new portrait, but would guess either several months or no time limit at all).

If it doesn't work with your card and you can't buy a new one find an Internet cafe with eve and change it there
As far as I know we have around a month before the avatars have to be changed after the patch -----------------------

If you still got SM2 cards its really time to upgrade. Because just running EvE would be a nightmare. --------------------------------------

Thanks for the quick answers.

Does anyone have a link to this info? I've been back through the dev blogs on character creation and can't see it.

SM2 support is being discontinued. There was a dev blog on that a few months ago. IIRC.

Quote from this dev blog:

TL;DR: Graphics cards with ShaderModel 3.0 support will become the minimum required graphics cards to run EVE Online at a yet-to-be-announced date in Q2 2011.
Q2 doesn't start till April, my impression was that CCP dropped the SM2 support because of the problems they were having making it work with the character gen, so April seems a bit odd.
I understand that I need to upgrade my computer but am simply trying to find out the date that I will need to upgrade it by in order to keep playing eve.
A dev comment or links to places where devs have posted on this issue would be welcome.

Originally by: CCP Caedmon As Bella Bee already confirmed there will be a grace period of around one month. The end-date will be announced when we know it and with enough notice for players to react. During the grace period players will be able to log into the game without having to go through the new character creator. As Bella Bee also pointed out, for those of you with alts whose appearance doesn't matter to you, there is the randomize option to allow you to speed through the process.
