The most common non-typical use for a ship, is the practice of using Destroyer hulls as salvagers. What I'm curious about is what kinds of strange loadouts, and un-orthodox fittings have players used to fill the needs of "niche-roles". How creative have you been in fail-fitting for those situational needs?
I have seen salvage Destroyers, and Mining Battleships, but are there any other kinds out there?
To start with, I use a Falcon Recon, fit with Cargo Expanders to work my PI sites in NPC nullsec. I call it "Magnum PI".
Are there any others?

I fitted my noctis with remote rep and energy tranfer arrays, in addition to some salvagers and tractors. Helping out the battleship cleaning out a few tough places, since it has such a massive capacitor, it can easily remain stable while transferring energy to the battleship, and repping it.

I use my lachesis as a HAC with a large EHP (largish shield and good resists) and pretty decent DPS. I'd love to tell you the fitting but I can't log in at the moment.

One of the most accepted and forgotten about is the Arbitrator.
It has it's uses as an EWAR boat, but most people run it as there Main Combat Cruiser, Logi Cruiser and PVE Ship off the line up.
The EWAR ship out does every other Amarr Cruiser in almost every role. Cept Maller Bait, but with its Tank it can Bait fine and is actually believable bait unlike the flagged as a bait ship only Maller.
So yeah the EWAR Boat fills every role of the Amarr T1 Cruiser Line Up both Armor and Shield Tankable with or without EWAR.
Talk about unorthodox.

Put whatever you like in the highs. I think you can even fit a set of torp launchers. This thing has 212,000 EHP (with slaves) and makes the perfect bait! If you heat the invuls, it jumps to 240,000.

WTF!
First off you have nothing to hold the bait so when Local Spikes they are gonna split. If they happen to have more people then your reinforcements can handle you are risking a half a billion slave set on the chance that they didn't pack a bubble or a Sebo Pod Popper for Empire.
Whats worse is your rigs are not even supporting your slave set? All this when the Rokh can literally fit a better tank without risking the Implants.

Oh look if you drop an Invuln you can fit a Warp Disruptor to it to. Why would anyone who isn't in the one corp that does't pod people risk a slave set when there are like 5 other ships that do it better for a tenth the price.

Believe it or not, I use a Tengu for gas mining in class 4 and 5 wormholes. I fit three warp stabs and the interdiction nullifier subsystem so the only thing that can hold me down is a Heavy Interdictor with the right script loaded. Or four points of warp disruption. So far it has paid for itself several times over and have never been caught.

If you are in highsec baiting a covert-ops fleet with 2 falcons in it and you actually dont have slaves then the fit makes more sense.
No tackle because I can't target anything anyways. Slaves were just for the lulz. I can't use them anyways. It was in 0.7 so there was no risk of being caught in a bubble. Rigs don't support an armor tank because its a friggin raven. Raven's shouldn't armor tank. Yes you can do it, but no you just shouldn't. It was done in this fit because I wanted max EHP and didn't care about useful things like BCUs. Oh and by the way, I am in the one corp that doesn't pod people (RvB) so even if I had those slaves, they weren't really at much risk anyways.
So while normally you'd be correct. In this situation, none of your objections actually matter. GG

So you set up a fit to bait a very specific type of fleet using a ship that is not great bait and don't mention the type of ship you are baiting...

Most high sec war corps are quite good at catching pods, theory crafting with multi bil implants is bad.

actually I would ECCM up that thing and have a disruptor in the hope I could catch one because baiting is pointless if you can not hold them. You only need to survive till your RR Arives to save you and a 3 slot tank will do that. Holding one for the slaughter is way more worth it. Any good Cov Ops Commander who see's local spike is gonna GTFO at the first sign of a Local Spike.

OK, it wasn't your fault that you couldn't read my mind and know what the fit was for. However like (I think) I said above, I had a raven and I didn't have a rohk within easy access. Turns out the Raven WAS good bait because they took it.
Originally by: Jaina Sunspot Most high sec war corps are quite good at catching pods, theory crafting with multi bil implants is bad.
I'd like to hear about these high-sec corps who are good enough to lock, tackle and destroy a pod which is instant-align and warp. The only way you should ever lose a pod in highsec is through lag or perhaps a disco ship. You generally know when you're about to be in your pod. Have an overview tab setup with planets on it. Switch to that, target a planet and spam the crap out of your warp button. Lag is the only way that they'd be able to target your pod before it is gone.
Originally by: Jaina Sunspot I have an Alt in RVB, see you soon.
Hope so. My main PC just had its graphics card melt, so it wont be for a day or two :D

If I'd fit ECCM and tackle, then I would have died to that fleet. Like I said above, they DID take the bait and I was down to about 5% shields when my backup arrived. If I'd dropped enough tank to be able to trap something, then my Raven would have been a wreck when my buddies arrived. Instead we got the chance to kill them, and I didn't have to lose a raven.
