OK, so I've had this idea for a while.
Imagine being able to lay proximity mines in a similar way that stealth bombers launch bombs, the mines would detonate if a ship gets within 1000m>5000m of them.
The detonation range and damage range could vary... you might be able to get bombs with 2000m detonation range with 5000m damage range. Some might be visible as bubbles similar to warp disruption bubbles, and some could have the same overview characteristics as corpses, but you can't lock on to them, or see them in space, you would just have a distance bearing to them. Some of them might have smart detonators, only going off when a red/neut gets within range, they could also have activation timers similar to anchoring/unanchoring mobile bubbles.
They wouldn't be able to be placed too close to gates/wormholes/jump bridges (10km+?) this would mean that blockade runners would be pretty much useless unless there was some kinda workaround.
There MIGHT be a need for a dedicated ship type to deploy them which might have a high sig-radius/medium speed, but stealth bombers might suffice. I can envisage this kind of feature eventually needing its own ship type though, just like the salvaging modules have required. ------- I LIKE DEHYDRATED WATERRRR |

we had mines in eve already, but they were removed.
i had that idea for destroyers, that would give them finally a role, as they've lost the salvager role now.
i would do it like drones, so a destroyer can only put out 5 drones, and they blow up as soon as the destroyer leaves the systems or logs, or gets blown up.
would be awesome in an strategical way.

They removed these for a good reason, as they would be way too prone to wide spread abuse.
Got a gatecamp? place drag bubbbles on all celestials, blanket the gate in mines and the drag points, so you can instapop even covops frigates warping in. Go bubble and blanket that celestial that the smart people use to get scan on the gate with mines, you dont even have to be there to get kills.
Couldnt use them in lowsec or highsec, they would be spammed against noobs to dont know not to warp to 0 from gate to gate, and would make lowsec even more empty and deserted than currently is, with highsec border systems even more likely to be camped than currently.
Also major blanketing of mines around gates woudl result in the same form of laggin exploit we currently see with mass bubbles/can/random **** that causes people jumping in to take a long time to load grid and thus die. This is a Petitionable exploit of game mechanics and a major reason fro the original removel of mines.
Not supported at all, nor will CCP ever actually undo the removal.

Didn't realise EVE had mines once... interesting... could make them as drones but like the spider mines in command and conquer? they just do LOADS of damage in one volley and blow up.

i know that :-)
that's why i wrote, like drones (only 5 per destroyer) and they go poof as soon as the destroyer droped them is not in system, also they should expire after 60 minutes.
so to fully spam a gate you'd need like 100 destroyers sitting in a system :-D

Didn't realise EVE had mines at one point, i'd like to see them re-introduced and just implemented better... the lag/mine spam issues could be controlled in a number of ways... high prices for mines, high anchoring time (maybe not this one) making mines take up a lot of cargo... only set number of mines allowed at once (similar to drones) not being awarded kill mails if the enemy is killed by a mine.
it goes without saying restrict them to low/null sec... but in low sec make it so the sentry guns take out any mines placed around gates.
Think it's an interesting game mechanic that should be explored. ------- I LIKE DEHYDRATED WATERRRR |

Oh? Do tell.

high prices for mines,
As capital and supercapital numbers have shown, price is NEVER a limiting factor except to the "little guy."

high anchoring time (maybe not this one)
Easily fixed. Get more people to help you.

making mines take up a lot of cargo...
See above.

Could work. But then again people could get around it by gathering up some 20 odd people and setting 100 mines all over a bubbled gate.

not being awarded kill mails if the enemy is killed by a mine.
One word: FRAPS
And... well... let's be honest... 0.0 alliances wouldn't really care too much about killmails. The idea is that they spam the chokepoint gates to prevent people from getting into their territory. _______________________

I think mines would dumb down the game some. Very similiar to claymores in COD. Just drop and go and get a kill when someone stumbles across. Even if you require someone to be in proximity it would be bad. As someone else stated it would make the highsec/lowsec gates unusable for the most part.
They are great for a real war, but in a game setting they take away too much fun.

Edited by: Nosferatu Zodd on 31/12/2010 00:33:52 I remember the Cobra mines, CCP destroyed the last ones I had in my hangar I guess about two years ago. They were removed for far too many reasons. Almost nobody has EVER used them. EDIT : Even suicide gankers wouldn't use them since 50% of the ways to use them are rewarded with a ban. ______________________________________________
