Hey all,
So, from my experience in level 1 missions, looting is rarely worth the time. I feel I get more money by killing everything and shoving off to my next mission. Level 2's feel like this as well, especially since I am in a slow cruiser.
My question is; would is be prudent to fit a single Salvager on my cruiser and salvage some wrecks from level 2s, or would it not be cost/time effective? How about level 3s? How many salvagers should I equip?
Thanks!

Some salvage goes for a lot of cash... in fact you probably make more cash of the salvage than you do off the loot. [well it al;ways used to be the case, even for level 1 missions]] --

Salvaging I always found to be such a hit-or-miss affair.
Some days it would rain Armour Plates and you'd make more money off the salvage that the mission it's self, and other times you'll go home with a hold full of garbage not even worth the capacitor to run the salvager
on top of that, I seem to remember someone with more Patience and math skills than me figuring out that at the level 4 level at least, you earned the most money by Blitzing through the missions as fast as you could for the Extra LP, although I have no idea if that translates to the lower tier missions.
so the answer I'd give too "how many to fit?" would be not so much as to slow down your completion speed.
Judging by the Aviator Sunglasses I'm going to assume you're flying Minmitar. The Rupture and the Hurricane both have a pair of "utillity highslots" that are normally filled with un-bonus'd Missile weapons, you could likely strip those out and replace them with a tractor + salvager combo and loot/salvage as you go (like a mini marauder) with a minimal Impact on your time per mission.
kinda get the best of both worlds, just don't bother completely clearing the field, simply loot/salvage in the background as you deal with the rats, and once you're done with them just go turn in the mission unless you see a juicy looking "big rat" wreck within reach.
It's amazing the glory you can win with a Rifter, a handfull of Fusion S, and Balls |

My Tip.
Have your Main Character as normal for the mission lvlv 3 or 4....
Then have a Gal char to sit in Domi and just throw out drones and set to guard your main char.
Now the Domi is just got some tank on it and all the top slots are salvagers and tractors.
Simple and easy multi boxing. :) IBTA (in before the applebabe) |

Personally I don't salvage in L1 and L2 missions, and in L3 just the ones that give good titanium and armor stuff (if I feel like it), like Angels, Blood Raiders, Sanscha.

Level 2 missions I think I used to average 500k to 1m each in salvage/loot. This is over the course of about 50-60 Level 2s.
In level 3s the average is closer to about 2m each. I have done about 200 Level 3s so far. I got almost 25m earlier today from a level 3 when I got a 12m item, 6m item, 2 800k items and a ton of 150-500k items. Was a complete fluke though.
Level 4s can have a big swing. Many missions have high bounty so the salvage is very little but on average I would guess I make 5-15m in loot/salvage from level 4s. I have only run about 30 Level 4s total though.
I run missions in my Drake and my 2nd account uses a Catalyst with 4 salvagers, 4 tractors and an afterburner. Even with 1 account if you use a dedicated salvage ship it will be much faster then trying to salvage a mission full of ships with 1 salvager and no tractors.

As you can see, there are a lot of different ways to do this so each person can do what suits them best.
The way that one philosophy goes - is - since the REAL money is in Level IV's - what you do - is grind all the levels below that as fast as you can. Then - when you get to your level IV's ... you start looting and salvaging. The trouble with this philosophy - is that the mission rewards suck worse than the loot and salvage. So ... if you're trying to support yourself and buy new ships with your mission running (instead of being financed by your alt) ... you're passing up a lot of cash (relative to your bounties and mission rewards) to do that.
So if you're new - then it often does pay to salvage and loot your wrecks.
Another variable - as mentioned - is that the rats in Gallente and Caldari space don't yeild as good salvage as the rats in Amarr and Minmatar space. They were supposed to have done something about that but ... it still seems that way to me. Of course ... you can just run missions for Minmatar or Amarr agents to get missions with their rats in them.
With multiple accounts ... I've brought up a number of new characters and what I do ...
Is to get two destroyers. Fit one with 5 150mm Rails, "Medium" Small Beam Lasers or Howitzers and the other with 4 Salvagers and 4 Tractors.
Then I run a bunch of missions in a row, bookmarking a wreck in each zone.
Wrecks (like jet cans) last 2 hours. So you've got 2 hours from the time your wreck was created to get back and loot/salvage them.
Then I go into People and Places/Places - and sort by date - so that the most recent wrecks are at the top of the list. Then I look at the first wreck I created that day (or for that series of missions) and warp there in my salvager destroyer. I then work my way up the list and salvage that series of wrecks. The only problem here - is if something interrupts your time table (like RL interference in your gaming) and you can't get back to your wrecks before hand. But - over all - this has worked out best for me.
Another factor is your salvaging skills. The higher you train them (and the better equipment you have) - the faster you will salvage as the better your chances of salvaging on any one cycle are.
You also want your cap management skills and procedures up - as salvaging can use a lot of cap.
Fit a cap recharger.
Turn off your Tractors if you don't need them.
Don't use more than one salvager per wreck - unless you have only one or two wrecks left. While towing, from one wreck cluster to the next - just use one salvager per wreck as this will let your cap recover.
Having to stop salvaging and let your cap refresh is not something you want to be doing.
MWD's can get you around faster - but take a big chunk out of your cap ... so I don't use them.
I fit Cargo Hold Expanders so I don't have to deal with running out of space as much. These will slow your ship down - but - if you've got good navigation skills - you can use your after burners more to get around. Of course - the AB's use cap - so once again your cap management experience comes into play here. You also have to watch it when using AB's and Tractors as the Tractors pull at a speed of 500 m/s. Go faster than that and you'll leave the wrecks you are towing behind. Let them get past 20km and you'll lose them and have go back.
If I fill my hold - I jettison it - then tow the jet can around. I then go finish salvaging my other wrecks - and come back in an industrial to pick up these jet cans full of salvage.
The key to making this worth while is:
1) Use a dedicated Salvaging Ship. 2) Run your missions - then do your salvaging run.
This makes things more efficient. Experience and looking at your wreck history in People and Places will tell you how many more missions you can run before you have to go salvage your wrecks. If you have a bunch of high density wreck fields to go through - it will take longer.

It should be obvious. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks, Toshiro.

Unattended drones tend to die. If they're T1 drones, you only have the hassle of having to spend time buying replacments, but if they're T2 drones, they actually cost something. Even for small T2 ones.
I love the idea of training my alt for a Gallerene or bunny drone-BS, and then having him along on missions mainly as extra drones, but I simply do not think it is really doable.
(I do have my alt along, occasionally, but I kept alt+tabbing back and forth between the two EVE clients, and I'm almost paranoid about retracting drones if they start taking damage.)

i've been playing about a month and i've been able to amass almost 100mil in my bank... that is minus ~50mil for ships and fits.
a VAST majority of that money has been made from salvage. I will snag 3 easy missions, run through them with a mission fit ship and snag my salvage coercer to clean them up.
Considering the rewards (including time bonus) range from 100-500k, all i have to do is find 2 armor plates and i have already exceeded that. I find quite a few pieces that run for 100k each, easily... all it takes is a few halfway decent pieces of salvage to make the time it takes, worthwhile.
Coming from a complete eve noob, salvaging has allowed me to make plenty of cash to do whatever i want, at this point.

It adds up. I am basically a packrat and always try to fit a salvager, scraping pretty much every wreck dry in the area, keeping the scraps in my hanger case I need it some day. After awhile, my pile of looted scraps has added around half a billion isk worth of total sellable salvage that I can fall back on if I ever decide to start building rigs, or need the money for an emergency impulse purchase.
I'm sure if I sat down and tried to average those millions over all the extra hours spent salvaging instead of grabbing a second mission, it would probably cause efficiency experts to grumble about my wasted time. But since I salvage as I mission anyway, it's just extra income with the loss of a couple of gun slots I didn't really bother to train for anyway. Besides, salvage weighs practically nothing, and it's not like I've ever had to choose between carrying loot or salvage due to cargo space anyway.
