Wait wait .. if there's zero downtime in the future, how are people going to know about the daily re-spawn? Are there plans to susbtitute for a daily grandfather clock chime ingame? |

While I too am happy for the progress CCP has made, let's not forget how important database optimization is, nor purge jobs. Also, you're missing the Ö from SoonÖ

WTF man, how do you expect the married players to keep their wives happy now? they had 1 hour a day for attention, someday in the future there will be no time for them at all... (aside from patch days)

I must admit, CCP is very impressive in terms of how they blog. Very. Kudos to all teams involved, and whomever kicked whomever's butt to get the recent trend of "information overload" going.
I myself work with databases; DBAs worldwide lament how buggy the RDBMS software is (no matter it be from Microsoft, Oracle, Sybase... can't speak to IBM), and CCP's outreach efforts put all these big companies to shame. (calling Sybase "big" in this context is perhaps too generous).
Keep it up, CCP!

I guess CCP Fallout meant "single-shard", but technically speaking, it's "single-sharded", 'cause of the shard in China, required due to the weird government regulations...

Thank you for continually working to make sure that no timezones have a benefit due to DT respawns. I look forward to you finishing this process.

Cutting down on and planning to get rid of DT is an amazing feat by CCP.
But getting a DBA to produce information that is comprehensible without the use of obscure tools is absolutely astonishing!
More dev blogs and more technobabble to the starving audience!

Originally by: "CCP Hunter" In the old days, systems in EVE Online were built on the fact that there was daily downtime. In the last few years no new code has been produced that relies on downtime and a great deal of work has been done in removing old dependencies on downtime. Originally by: CCP Hunter It is our goal that sometime in the not too distant future, EVE Online will have no daily downtime.
Does it mean that in "not too distant future" you'll be able to remap systems between the nodes without need of downtime? Will the node reboot (players disconnection) be still required for this?

By the time we get to Future(tm), which is way further than Soon(tm), computers will be so powerfull that each node will potentially able to hold a fleet fight with every New Eden pilot involved _ Mining Crystal BPOs Angel Ships |

Originally by: CCP Fallout CCP Hunter's new dev blog shares details on what occurs during daily downtimes, and how we are working towards reducing them to zero. Read all about it here.
NOOOOOOO!!!!! When are CCP going to learn???? By completely removing the downtime lots of your players will lose their daily feeding time! When theres no downtime there will be no feeding time, and as such people will in the end succumb to starvation!! Starving players are bad m'kay!! Its bad enough reducing their feeding and showering time by half!
(good work though )

Nice that you are trying to optimize the downtime and such, but tbh i cannot understand why you are shortening it too.
I predict the following will happen: The first few downtimes will be 20-30 minutes just fine.
But then "something" will happen and we will have 40-50 minutes. And this will happen every few days/weeks.
Result: Especially the newer players who can't understand the reason for DT will go emo everytime you guys make a little mistake. This rage will accumulate over a few weeks, lowering the trust in CCP once again and you will have no effective benefit from lowering the DT at all.
So why not keeping the DT at 1 hour "offically" but have the server up again at 11:20-11:30 nonetheless. That will make people happy because the server is up earlier than they expect (I know it makes me happy everytime it happens now). And even if problems arise and DT takes longer, players won't care because that's the expected length of the downtime anyway.
So use the improvements that you guys made in the DT-progress and give yourself a little room for mistakes. --------------------------------------------------

Right now, this very moment, Russians are upset. They are sad and despondent. What will they do without belt-rat respawns so that they can farm all the officers? How will their sov. survive without the 2x tower-spam advantage in their time-zone? What will become of 1/3rd of 0.0?!
Take this moment and think of the Russians you know. Pray for them now.

Edited by: Sevarian on 29/10/2010 17:13:12 I would say that till we have issues with huge fleet battles, (200+ in local) will start making server side lagging in game, we need DT as much as possible. Atleast we need once a week DT what fix all the usual problems. Problem what most EU and late AU tz players has is that the DT is during the day and it is bad. Option to set DT into early morning in EU tz, late night US tz and during the day on AU tz. So what we going to have is most 2 heavy Timezones covert (+ not sure on AU / asian usage). This incomming 30min isn't so bad at all (EU is happy , US is happy, most AU tz is happy). Pushing DT to time where server has less people online in same time would be best.

Downtime is done when it's best for CCP, not best for the players. I'm positive I don't want engineers or staff working on TQ at 4 in the morning =). ---

If you're getting it down to 30 mins...
Why not stay online. Popup an indicator during downtime saying that 'semidowntime is happening and you might experience lag' and do the backups and whatever over say a period of 1 hour and have only 50% performance degradation. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe.

So post DT officer spawns will be a thing of the past and we are reduced to continuously cleaning belts and hoping for luck?
