There has been no apology, only comments that read "people will be disappointed that their friends' didn't make the cut' rather than dealing with the true issues of appropriateness and stylistic match.

I'm really surprised that didn't get through, it definitely fits in with the Amarrian style.

As someone else said, this isn't an apology, it's an excuse. Disqualifying the worst entry on a technicality (does anyone really believe that the rule-breaking signature was the reason it was removed?) does nothing to address the fact that most of the entries are poorly suited to EVE at best, and the judges were apparently clueless about what EVE is like.
If that was the reason then you could argue http://baranha.deviantart.com/art/Naru-Kami-Final-179403464 should be taken out to for having a logo.
I mean I love it and it should not be taken out, but that reason is bull**** they could just tell someone to remove it in a minute if that was the reason.

I'm pretty sure the judging wasn't taken that seriously. I mean the community management team even nonchalantly waved the issue off because they were watching survivor.

Yes..thats an awesome one too.
And again..I ask...how is it that the LA even beat out the tornado that replaced it due to a technicality and oversite on rules??? I mean, did they even LOOK at the LA Battlecruiser??? Thats insulting!

If this is how the semi-finalists will stay then:
1. Naru Kami 2. The Gatekeeper 3. Tornado

One thing that bothers me is that I feel like they judged a lot based on the 7th optional view more than the part that was asked for. :/

I was really hoping my contributions would get some more love: Republic Fleet Stalker Republic Fleet Gungnir
I feel like I lost out to the fancy 3D renders, popularity wise, because the dry line drawings didn't catch as much attention. The finalists are thoroughly disappointing because hardly any of them look like they should fit into the Eve design styles- Something I tried to replicate as best as possible...
I sent a ticket to the Help-Desk at DA during the first week of the contest asking them if their judging team was sufficiently knowledgeable of Eve-Online content, and the styles of the ships in it.

I figured my best chance was if the contestants were chosen based on adherence to the existing styles, so I hadn't given up all hope. I also figured maybe the 3D renders might get judged a little more harshly than another more easily interpreted line drawing.

hey you made a republic fleet ship too and mine also were not fancy and rendered. :)
to be honest your 1st one, the stalker, I would of picked in the top 15.
edit: right because the 7th view might make some ships look really good, but it's hard to make a good turnaround without using 3d. (I'm a 3d artist but even I tried to make it 2d)

1) Tornado 2) Tsunami 3) Nergal
I liked the Nergal more when I thought the fat end was the front and the small bit was the tail.
The others don't look like Eve ships, except for the Minmatar Iteron and maybe the Jovian ship. Neither of which are much fun for the players obviously. I'd be surprised if CCP didn't pick the Tornado. It feels so much like it should be in Eve already. I can't believe someone had to be disqualified before it was added into the semifinals.

I think noone got disqualified as long as they followed rules: Six uncolored, line drawings + (7th rendered view) Made specially for the contest Had a length shown on the submission (plus the ship couldn't be shorter then 50m or longer then 1km) Didn't had any signature or watermark and didn't use any 3rd party textures
Yeah i got the cdkey thing as well, allready have more than enough accounts so that ones going to waste. I'd rather had something like an ingame item or such

My top four would be: (couldn't decide for third so have a joint third)
1. Gatekeeper 2. Tsunami 3. Cyruk Velam Naru Kami
Wouldn't have them in the roles the artists had them in though - I think Tsunami would make a great minmatar tech 3 frig design for example, and I'd probably use some of the other models as battlecruisers than battleships as I don't really think eve needs any more battleships at the moment but tier 3 or pirate faction battlecruisers would be a nice addition.

I accept that Deviantart should be free to choose the semifinalists and the winners of the contest in any way they choose. However, I think it should ultimately be CCP's decision on which design from the whole contest makes it into the game. Deviantart has the right to judge the best ship design in their eyes, but it's obvious that they are totally unqualified to judge which design is best for Eve. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

Love the stalker design it's a fanstastic design with some original shapes and view on things. I'm not so found of the other I quite like the lance effect (though its been done on the incursus its still an original implementation) but overall it feels to boxey for my taste, I think it's a good design though slightly typhoon-esque in some ways.
I fear you may be right on the fancy 3D renders. I think it's true that those without the artists eye will struggle to interprit the line drawings which will definately influence popular opinion but the fact that all the semi finalists bar the ascendency contain a 3D render is telling of the fact that perhaps the judging has perhaps suffered from this as well.

To be honest, I think ships like the Tornado, Naru-Kami and Cryuk-Velam had more work put into them, but personally, I would have picked your entry over their choice of many of those that were chosen. One of the supposed judging criteria was technical skill and another was artistic presentation. I think, although it's unwritten, that most observers expected at least some kind of 3D drawing (rendered or illustrated) to show what the ship would look like, as it's next to impossible to imagine the artists's vision from a technical plan drawing.

Edited by: Jennifer Starling on 21/10/2010 08:16:17 Must say it's a pity the X-Wing Minmi ship didn't make it.
Also too bad the Precursor didn't make it, but it's not that spectacular although a very decent Amarr design. I like the Mark II even better, I'd like to have that one!! Or the Templar, it almost looks like a Klingon war vessel, but I guess it's just too pretty for EVE!!
For the rest I'm sorry but asymmetrical ships are sooo 2004!!

Thank you. The Gungnir was me expirementing with the hexagonal shapes a lot of Minmatar designs have (Their stations, the Wreathe, the Typhoon) as well as a nice weaponry rail for tons of weapons to sit on (Not unlike the Rokh). While I like it a lot, I was fully aware it's blocky gritty shape would probably make it less popular.
I think it would have been too frustrating for me to draw fully 3D renderings of my ship as I've always drawn from a technical standpoint, and that replicating every detail in a new perspective is very difficult. Originally by: Bomberlocks To be honest, I think ships like the Tornado, Naru-Kami and Cryuk-Velam had more work put into them, but personally, I would have picked your entry over their choice of many of those that were chosen. The Naru-Kami, Tornado, Cyruk'Velam, and Gatekeeper are the only ships on that list I care for, but the only one I think should pass as "Eve" enough for the final 15 is the Cyruk as it looks definitely like a Gallente ship (Maybe a bit too much, as it almost resembles a certain proteus setup too accurately).
Of course, the Tornado is awesome and I've got nothing to say against it. If I were to lose out to any ship I would hope it's something that at least looks good, looks Minmatar, is vertical, and is asymmetrical.
-sigh- This whole thing is a joke. I think only CCP's judgment on the matter can save this catastrophe and I really do hope they take interest in the matter. A lot of people put extreme effort into this only to see their attempts wasted at the carelessness of some judges seemingly have no knowledge of Eve and it's content.
For the sake of myself, others, and those who truly deserve to win I hope CCP can rectify this terrible failure. - Battle Dust Proposal |

It would be nice if they picked the tornado, and use it to introduce +1 ewar/utility battleship to all races, which could be based on some other entries (aquillion for example). Of theese finalists, its obvious to me that the tornado is the most "ready" for eve, although the naru-kami is very sexy and i would want it better.

I think we should really make our own casino with blackjack and hookers here. I mean why not to make 3-rd party protected contest (hello Chribba ) with community votes and huge isk prizes to find out who is the real winner. At least we can reward authors of works that was moved in the thrash bin by the lame DA judging By the way in normal contests there is always special awards for comunnity chosen winners (hey CCP do you still remember that European Game Awards 2010 voting, dont you?)
