I'd just like to take the time to point out that the Diablo III demo only included the content up to the first boss fight, on normal difficulty. Even with such limitations it got rave reviews. Once it was released it was quickly panned, to the point where people just avoid talking about it anymore. So pay no attention to what people say about a game based on a beta or demo.
As many people as possible should join the beta to get a taste of it for themselves rather than relying on the opinions of idiots. The graphics are poor because this is a very early build (this is stated in the CSM minutes). Look at the DUST gameplay videos that have been released to see what the graphics will look like in the future. The gameplay is already interesting (public knowledge, check the videos).
I am sure that DUST will not appeal to the Counterstrike types who just want to turn on the console, blow people up for fifteen minutes, then set the table while Mum serves dinner. I am sure that DUST will appeal to people who want deep gameplay, a complex world in which to demonstrate that they are smarter that the other guys, and the opportunity for teamwork to produce awesome results.
What will DUST's active player count be? I expect somewhere around 1% of the PS3-owning population (about the proportion of "people who bought Diablo III" versus "people who play EVE Online"). With EVE Uni and a bunch of other folks getting into the player-training racket, I would expect to find a bunch of guides appearing along the lines of "DUST514 for Counterstrike players": basically guides to help people who play other shooters to transition as painlessly as possible into the more complex environment of DUST (train X, then Y, use this fitting, then just run around shooting stuff like you used to do).
EVE Uni, Agony and Goonswarm have training programs for new players: I think the hardest thing for CCP will be getting brand new players in contact with the player-driven training organisations before they quit the game in disgust. Hopefully there will be a tutorial like EVE currently has: walk the player through PvE missions (at Fanfest there was talk about PvE versus rogue drones), teach them about fittings, using particular modules (how do remote repairers and shield transfers work in a FPS?) and handling the capture mechanics (E3 video).
DUST will never appeal to the folks who love COD for it's instant-on action. The skill tree and fitting window will likely turn those people off the game:
Clueless Noob wrote:what?!? I have to use my brain? In order to use the Falcon I have to train three month's worth of skills including Engineering, Electronics Upgrades and Electronic Warfare? I can't fit a missile launcher because my armour plate uses too much CPU? Yikes! And why are people laughing at me for fitting a shield booster and armour repairer? Why is that guy a hero for fitting 1600mm plate to a shield tanking ship? Why is this guy in the Slasher able to blow up my Dominix? Why isn't he taking damage from my lasers? I DON'T UNDERSTAND! I HATE THIS GAME!
Just because DUST didn't appeal to one 12yo COD-player doesn't mean it won't appeal to anyone.
I just want to know whether mining in DUST is done with lasers or a pickaxe. Day 0 advice for new players: Day 0 Advice for New Players |
