I'm looking at training up capital skills to fly a carrier. Nidhoggur looks like the best choice to me for its remote rep bonus. Not concerned with tanking as no tank really holds up against a big enough hotdrop anyway. Not concerned about extra fighter damage from the Thanatos either. People tell me the Nidhoggur is an awful useless carrier to train for. Why is this? -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

It shield tanks.

Edited by: King Rothgar on 10/10/2010 03:16:07 I've been flying archons for a year and a half now and after my most recent archon loss, I decided to buy the minnie carrier skill book and give the niddy a try. I haven't had it long but so far it's proving to be a pretty good carrier. As you've already noted, it doesn't have the dps of a thanny or the local tank of an archon/chimera but it does have a hell of an RR bonus. As far as I can tell, it is the single greatest RR ship in the game for both shields and armor. If RR is the primary goal you have for your carrier, it's probably the best one. And it isn't any more fragile than the thanny, it just gets an RR amount bonus instead of a fighter damage bonus.
Edit: You can actually shield or armor tank it. Mine is currently armor tanked as I didn't feel like buying and training the capital shield booster skill too.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

Does it? It has 6 lows and 5 mids. Surely it can armor tank. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

I mean it doesn't have to shield tank, it just typically is. Slot layout is the same as the thanatos, but with the same fit you still have ~160k less ehp than with the thanatos. Your call, ultimately, it is just that if you are going to armour tank, both the archon and thanatos do it better.
(part of the shield tank thing has to do with the hel and the natural training progression, but you can choose to do whatever the hell you want...heh)

Mine armor tanks... And I'm not sure I've ever seen a shield tanked Nidhoggur in person.

I don't agree with this... though I will freely admit that we only armor tank/RR with our carriers. But, the Archon can run 4 Cap RR and has better capacitor to boot. The Niddy would be better, but it just doesn't have enough grid for a workable fit.

And then it has a huge capacitor deficiency vs the Archon. Its not only important to be able to fit them, but also to run them.

The capacitor issue is something I immediately noticed on fitting one (along with grid) but that's a situational problem. Nearly every time I've fielded a carrier, I only needed maybe 5 minutes of cap. And even then I don't have EVERYTHING running. Generally it's either the RR or the self reps, don't think I've ever had to use both at the same time for more than a few cycles. But this is a low sec perspective. In the epic server crashing lag fests of null sec, I'm sure the experience is completely different.
From the sounds of the OP, I suspect he's planning to support small BS gangs in low sec. In that role, you shouldn't need more than a few minutes of cap and probably won't need to RR and self rep at the same time. You're really going more for burst capability in that environment. The niddy looks good to me for that kind of thing.

i fly th niddy becausee i am rp like that - and because its the best looking carrier. But th achon is superior. Instead of training the niddy, get the archon up to caier 5 and all th resists to 5. . . if you already have that, then have fun with the niddy. . . -----------

Because T2 rigging a carrier is a good idea? Come on man. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
