I am heavily trained up on missile boats (and shields) and want to transition to training a gun boat. There are two boats that I am looking at and wanted to get you guys input on possibly something better to begin this training transition.
Stabber Fleet Issue (allows me to use some of my missile skills till I get the gun skills trained up)
Harbinger (I just like this boat, no real reason other than its fast and holds a good rack of guns)

Gunnery support skills to 4(Not that hard or long, really), AWU to at least 4(You should have this anyway) and t2 Mediums if you plan to use the ships in PvP before you step in them. I have 6.1 mil in Gunnery and still have most of my supports to 4 Yeah I am a pirate. What are you gonna do about it? Killboard link is not allowed to be used in a signature.Applebabe

caldari transitions perfectly into minmatar.,
Tons of minmatar ships can abuse the mobility of shield tanking, and even more, lots of minmatar ships abuses missiles.

I wouldnt fit missiles to the stabber fleet issue seems like a waste personally. I would suggest using a cyclone as it has a few missile slots as well as gunnery slot whilst your training your guns up, its also a shield tanker. Then maybe move to the hurricane once you have tech 2 guns.

Lots is overstating it. The phoon and hugin uses them ok though.
Pesonally I went from missiles into Lasers, for the Phantasm, shield tanked Harb, and it opens for Sac later (I was dissapoint :( ).
But any route is ok really. Minmatars good sub BS ships are all shield tankers, so thats a bonus :). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very helpful, thanks guys.
Have gunnery, hybrid and projectile somewhat trained, so I can use them while training what I want which is lasers.
I will look at the other ships on the list. Good to know the ones that I can shield tank while training the armor skills too.

So, I had not looked at the Cyclone, that is a pretty heafty rig. What more can you guys tell me about it? May be the best of both worlds for me as a cross training ship.

It's... a tier 1 BC. And other than the Brutix, that's a bad thing. And even in the Brutix it's not a whole lot better. But a Hurricane can indeed tank like a mofo.
Still, if you really want a shield tanked gun ship, look to Sansha ships or go for a shield Hurricane. They can be quite good in the right situation.
(But remember the basic rules of shield tanking: devote as much as you can to gank while still maintaining tank. That's the whole trick, whether passive or active, freeing low slots is supposed to increase the effectiveness of high slots while giving up critical mid slots.)

Cyclone can be a fairly decent ship for PVP, but it takes quite a bit of both player and character skill to make it truly shine. To get any sort of gank and tank fit, you need pretty much maxed out fitting skills. If you push it all the way for gank though with minimal tank, it can do quite a good deal of damage for its price.

Cyclone is prob one of the most capable of the under-rated bc's out there. With proper missile, gunnery, and fitting skills to squeeze it together ofc.
5x AC's and 3x HAM launchers makes for a hell of a gank considering the price-tag. Also works pretty well with neuts in place of the launchers.

Thanks for all the input. A final few questions. So, accepting that I have to get my skills where I can fly any of these well, and considering my current suite of Missile and Shield skills the three that seem to most be in contention for me to begin training for and fitting would be;
Cyclone Hurricane Stabber Fleet Issue (I left this one in due to the fact that I like it and its substantially faster than the others)
Cyclone probably easiest to fit and afford, Hurricane can run one more turret but may tank a bit better than the Cyclone and the Stabber is the fast bird in the bunch. The Stabber also has a really small signiture radius.

Edited by: Caleidascope on 21/09/2010 18:16:35 I use active shield tank sniper Cyclone for level 3 missions. I can run ab and medium shield booster, and it is cap stable without ccc rigs. With ccc rigs you can fill the low slots with dps modules and be even more deadly. It might not be better, but it is cheaper than Hurricane, cheaper than Drake. I like it a lot.

at least one of each frig, cruiser,bc,battleship,,recon, dreadnaught can use missiles to get a tad lil bit of damage.
Sometimes you really want a lil bit more damage instead of neuts.

Just to throw this out there.. a bellicose with hams is a pretty funny ship to use on people that may suspect an easy kill. Altho it should be armor tanked.. cheap hull, cheap to fit, solid frig baiter/killer.

Honestly, you'll want to train nothing but gunnery skills once you experience the awsome that is projectile turrets. Honestly the best place to start is with a rifter and i'm very serious about that. Using a rifter will teach you the basics of turret based pew instead of realtively easymode launcher pew. Learn to kite just out of scrambler/neut ranges, learn to adjust your ammo to range. Once you get all that down you'll feel a lot more comfortable and probably won't loose as many bc's to rookie mistakes.

Rifter can run as a missile boat too. Two missile launchers and two salvagers. Why salvagers? Because missiles killed them.

Just wanted to drop in and say train minmatar, almost every decent minnie pvp ship can be shield fit, and you can use your missile skills for the typhoon and hound.
