Awesome! I love stuff like that.
Altho, at least for me I lose perspective(sp?) after a certain height. It just don't get all that scary any more. Eg jumping the 10 meter pool tower was way more scary than sky diving.
Either way it's really awesome climb, can't imagine how tired you'd be after the first 20 meters lol

I enjoy climbing and thought, hmm that doesn't look too bad. Then at about 2 minutes the narrator said this:
"This is called free climbing meaning no safety ropes are used. It's easier, faster and most tower workers climb this way."
I then imagined how windy it could get at that height and started to feel slightly ill. _______

I get mildly uncomfortable when I climb on a chair or a table, or look down from a low-railing balcony anywhere above floor 3. I'd probably go mental at the mere idea of me getting up so high in such unsecure conditions. You have to admit, it looks damn cool when you know you're not in any danger yourself though. I just wonder how much they pay those guys

I had a couple of strange experiences recently. When I was younger, I used to be into rock climbing, abseiling. I for some reason went to the top of the A-frame of one of the largest ship-to-shore crane in the UK (at the time) and I loved all of it.
I didn't do anything like that for several years, and when it came to going up some scafolding a few months ago I felt sick and had to come down I was so petrified lol (it was up against the chimney of a two story house)
The job of linesman is quite a scary one too, they drop you off in a helicopter onto some power lines, then you have to crawl along them and mend them once the helicopter flies away. I saw a bit on that, but it was part of a longer TV show and I can't [be bothered to] find it right now

I had a hard time getting 10 ft from the edge of the roof of the 36 story office building I work in when we were scouting out places for microwave transmitters. We get 20-60 mph winds regularly downtown and everytime I felt a slight breeze I wanted to throw myself to the ground so I didn't get blown off the building lol.

Eh, what's so scary about that?
I can't see that it's any more scary or risky than the 100 metre towers I've worked on in the past really (a fall from 100 meters is no less fatal than one from higher up, just more time to watch the ground coming to get you lol).
And I noticed he did actually use a fall-arrest harness and lanyard when he rested and when he moved his tool bag from one rest platform to the next - so technically not really any more of a freeclimb tahn the work I do on towers (I clip on only when I stop otherwise it would take too long to get up the tower. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

I'd be worried that the tower would break. There's no surviving going to happen if something goes wrong at those heights.

You try designing a robot that can climb to the top of 20 assorted types of tower, work out what the problem is and fix it.
That has to be on a par with deep-sea oil-rig diving for some of the riskiest working conditions I've come across. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

Thats called ground rush. Basically your brain can't tell the difference in your height compared to the ground once you get above a certain level - something around 3000 feet. It's typically why skydiving isn't that scary. Take away the wind and it'd actually feel like you were hovering - there's none of the lurch/stomach dropping that you get on things like rollercoasters after a sudden drop.
Ground rush is also why things like Bungee Jumping are much more bloody scary the skydiving. I've done a couple of bungies and a couple of skydives, but honestly the thought of doing a bungie right now just gave me the shivers. Skydives just fun.

now that would be a fun way to get down
and that is one hell of a job. I can understand not wanting to clip and reclip every like 3 steps though. I would however want to clip in a little more often than he does.

Can't believe that safer ways of reaching the summit were not designed in to the tower.
Climbing over those mounting plates at various stages in the tower (where there are no dedicated ladder rungs) would scare the poo out of me at that height, but climbing over the same mounting plate at a height of 2 feet would not be a problem at all. The only difference between climbing at 2 feet and 2000 feet (or even 20 feet) is FEAR ... ok, the wind and the sway of the tower are contributing factors to brown pants as well i spose
As an aside, was the co climbers face pixelated out cos he knew he would get fired for breaking safety regulations by climbing without attaching safety devices? |

It would be a privacy thing. Free climbing is allowed in the OSHA rules and most do it, according to the narrator.
