Ok so I know this isn't the ideal place to be posting this, but quite frankly I'm out of options and ideas. I live in West Sussex in the UK and I'm going to be made homeless either by tomorrow or at the latest by the end of this week. So here goes, I'm looking for a new home, I'm clean, well mannered and hard working. I have exhausted every other avenue that I have, local councils, other friends and charitable organisations. I have no family, so I can't go there for help and none of the people I know locally can help either.
So this is me, asking anyone out there in EVE if you can help me. You can contact me via these forums or look me up on EVE-GATE and message me there. I have net access at a local library everyday and will be checking back as frequently as I can. So please, if you or anyone you know can help a fellow podder, please get in touch. No, this is not a joke, nor a scam of any kind, just one human being asking another human being for help.
many thanks
mike

I think you fail to understand me. Right now I have no means of doing so, hence why I am asking for anyone to help me. I need somewhere, even if it is only temporary, so that i can get myself sorted. And im not on eve, im in a public library logged into the forums.

Oh, so you have no money?
Well, is there a Salvation Army in England? Go there if so. Surely there must be homeless shelters?
Are you employed? You seem to have an education, how did you allow yourself to become homeless?

You need an active subscription to be able to post on the forums. So how is it that you are destitute yet able to pay for an online game?
You can do what I did when I found myself in this situation...join the military. They feed you, house you, give you a job.

I moved back to the UK from Spain 7 months ago. Effectively homeless.
I know the system backwards and believe me there is no contingency for you unless you have alcohol or substance abuse problems, in which case you get x number of points towards a priority or 'at risk' ticket on the local social housing registry. If you have just come out of prison perversely you qualify. Good eh?
My advice to you, sincerely, is the following:
1. Do you own a car? If so. Prepare to spend at least a month sleeping in it.
2. If you do not have your own transport then you need to go buy a tent and a sleeping bag from Decathlon and scout out a good spot to pitch it after dark when nobody can see you.
3. Make an appointment to see your local Housing Officer and/or Homelessness Prevention Officer and fill out the forms and make it clear you are soon to be homeless and have nowhere to go. They will need a letter from your landlord confirming the dates you are to be evicted/your current tennancy ends. They will tot up your points based on your age, circumstances etc. and may be able to find you some temporary accomodation in one of the charity funded/administered shelters while your council housing app is processed and assessed. Very few councils will put you up in a B&B unless you have vulnerable dependants. Each council has different policies and guidelines. You can find out yours by enquiring in your local council office or on their website. Some are great and have a pledge to prevent homelessness completely, some just can't cope and have sold all their housing stock and are unable to house people no matter how bad it gets. So cross your fingers!
4. Consider, seriously, going home to parents or friends family. If you have nobody at all you are in for a tough few weeks mate. There is little help/support for people who are normal, not addicted to anything, not a criminal, not recently discharged from the forces, single, male and homeless. You might get enough points for a bedsit but even that will take weeks. At least two. If you can find someone to stay with be very very very very careful you dont end up slipping in to the hidden homeless statistic and stuck in a rut 'sofa surfing'. Thats worse than being homeless imho.
Make provision for where you will be sleeping while all this is sorted out. Even if its rough somewhere or in a car etc. Plan now.
The #1 safest, quickest and most viable option is to find your own private property to let and let it ASAP.
If you can't afford it and/or you are unemployed you may qualify for some help. If you have any assets, sell them. Get together the ú1000 or so in cash you need to move in to a rented property. Its usually a month in advance plus a month deposit. Most places will want to do a credit check on you and you will find it hard to rent anywhere if you are unemployed/intending to get housing benefit etc. Altho some landlords will take you if you push them and are well turned out etc. Just clean yourself up and go in to letting agents and hit them straight up with your circumstances and ask if they can help you. You might be surprised ..
Rent privately is my advice. If you havent got the cash sell everything you own to get it. If you can't afford it even then you are going to need to wait for social housing and that could be weeks or months.
I got lucky when I came back from Spain I stayed with my parents for a week then got offered a council bedsit, which in the end I turned down in favour of a rented property. I was unemployed at the time so I got JSA and housing benefit but still needed to stump up a month's rent up front. Most councils offer a Deposit Bond scheme that they can offer to landlords in lieu of a security deposit - mine took it thankfully. That meant I only had to find ú500 to move in to a spanking shiny new apartment. Lucky. Indeed.
Being caught out and homeless sucks. In the UK in winter its incredibly hard. Good luck!

Cutter pays for game time with isk, that's why he's able to post...
I spent from the age of 17 to the age of 23 couch surfing/mostly homeless. I finally exhausted EVERYTHING at one point, but I did what I had to for work so I could maintain a roof over my head, and that included shoveling horse **** for a bit when I worked at a carriage company. I worked as a dishwasher under the table, cleaned a cafe every week for $20, besides waiting tables there under the table.
It's rough, sounds like the UK has more resources for dealing with homeless than the US. There were periods where I slept on subway benches and church steps. There was a shelter in Evanston Illinois that would give people an address so they could get work that I stayed in for a while too.
Hope you get sorted, best thing is to find ANY work, any at all, you're going to get hungry at some point, and this is probably the beginning of the worst time of year to end up on the streets.

It's been over four years since I lived in Brighton but it used to have a very active squatting scene, there's a lot of vegan/hippy/activist types who are often pretty good at helping out when you're having problems. (As long as you're clean and can take their pretentious ramblings with good humour).
The cowley club on London road is a good place to meet people who know where the squats are, which ones are clean and which ones should be avoided. At the least it's somewhere warm with cheap food and lots of good books. Go during the day time, it becomes a members only anarchist club in the evenings (lol).
Another option is the Titnore Woods protest camp near Worthing. Again my info may be out of date but the camp used to be very homeless friendly, if you pitch in with the chores people will help you with food n stuff. Probably not somewhere you want to stay for too long but if you're struggling with the basics of food and warmth there will at least be some people to help you.
Sorry I can't be of more help, I hope life throws you some luck soon. _______

there is always a job at mcdonalds..... they will hire pretty much anyone. from there u can get free food and from your wages u can then rent a room in a house.
if your out on the streets and its cold go to a hospital A&E dept and u can stay warm in the waiting room.
or go to a church and the priest might be able to get u into a shelter.

Pretty bad situation. I had been in a similar one 11 years back. One day when I woke up I didn't have enough money to even buy a packet of cigs and rent was due in a few days. That afternoon I had to sell my car so I could eat I simply didn't work for 7 months and all my money went bye-bye.
Ofc one can probably afford to make such mistakes at the age of 22. It's surely a bit tougher later in life.
Do you have a degree? The first degree is free for British people as far as I know. You could try and enrol to a univ and earn a place in a hostel as well. You could probably still apply for fall courses.
If you don't have the appropriate entry qualifications you could still apply to a secondary education institute.
How old are you anyways?

How wrong you are. Students in the UK are being forced into economic slavery because it's the easiest way for the government to maintain control over them, and banks make billions. The UK is a third world country with people still dying of starvation, because the government doesn't care. Look at the idiots now, they're going after public services and are going to cut into education, police, healthcare, etc. to save 5 billion, instead of going after tax dodgers which would earn 15 billion. But they can't let anyone find out all these politicians are corrupt tax dodgers as well can we now?
The collapse of this pretentious country is inevitable. I'm no Brit but I've lived there a few years and know the system well. I will tell you this, the UK is a disaster the likes of Greece and Iceland waiting to happen.

I have a friend who has been in a similar situation. I assume you are not working at the moment. First thing - you obviously need a job.
Even if you are skilled and/or educated, finding work in UK is tough going. If you are willing to do anything for money, I would advise getting in touch with your local recycling companies. The work is dirty, but they have such a high turnover of staff (because people hate it) they will take pretty much anyone on. They probably use agencies to recruit for them, so find out the agency they use and get registered. You will at least need a mailing address for this though, you dont need to live there, just somewhere you can get mail sent to.
The reason i say this, is because i had a friend stay on my sofa for a week when he was made redundant and could not afford to run his house. He had applied for hundreds of jobs with no luck but got into the recycling business and now is back on his feet with a little flat of his own.
Good luck with everything. Keep your chin up.
Sham.

Sorry but you come across as very idealistic. I lived in Lesotho for a while and have been to a number of 3rd world countries, compared to the 3rd world we have it very good in the UK.
People do not die of starvation in the UK, people living in squats in the Sussex area have all sorts of issues keeping them below the poverty line but food was rarely a problem, you simply go to a supermarket skip and take what you need. If you really are becoming ill then you can walk in to a hospital and receive treatment, try doing that in the USA and see how far you get.
"Economic slavery" is a term thrown around far too easily, ask someone in a Deli slum what they think economic slavery is. As for student loans and tuition fees they are repayable on very generous terms and if you don't earn enough you don't have to pay them at all, compare that to the states where people often leave uni with $50,000 or more of debt and have to repay it no matter what they earn, it will even follow them if they become bankrupt.
For all that we say it is hard to get a job in the UK the truth is that if you want one you will get one eventually. I agree that the tories are going to ruin our economy but we'll bounce back because we always do, Britain has seen far far harder times than these. _______

Well actually, you will get free treatment. The issue in the USA is about health insurance, not heath care. A hospital cannot turn you away if you need treatment.

My thread appears to be getting derailed. Thanks for your replies so far folks, I will be checking out the available squats here in my town, see if there is anything viable as far as water and power goes, I don't much like the idea of squatting but its better than the alternatives. As far as getting a job goes whilst homeless, good luck.
Very few, if any, companies will accept a care of address for a prospective employee for obvious reasons so I will have to stick with the benefits for now. I do agree though that if you really want a job you can find one, even in these harsh times. My request still stands however, if there is anyone nearby that has a spare room or even a couch and would be happy to take benefit payments directly from the local council, please hit me up here :D
Thanks for everything so far guys and gals, this community really is one in a million

I'm in Brighton currently, and will be around until Monday. I'd offer you a room if I could but I'm staying with friends.
Altpost for anominity reasons.
P.S. My rented accomodation is in Canterbury. Don't know if that's any good for you, or even if my landlord would try to evict me or what.

I'm a student too, and currently my study will leave me with about ú18k of debt.
I don't pay any of that back unless I earn over ú15k a year. If any of it remains in 25years, it's wiped clean.
So essentially if I succeed I repay the loan that has allowed me success, and if I fail then the debt is not mine. Obviously I want to succeed. It helps that I'm not a ****ing layabout and save my money.

If you had even bothered to read any of this thread before trolling it, you would have noticed that this is OOP and that I have every right to post here, also I pay for EVE using plex which I purchase ingame with isk.
I posted here because I know that the majority (yourslef not included it seems) of the EVE community is actually made of fairly decent people, it is these people I was appealing too, either for direct assistance or any possible information that could be of use to me. Please return to your current residence my under-bridge dwelling hirsute friend.

Its really that bad over there eh?
Crazy.
I'm an unskilled worker in my early twenties, with half of an irrelevant degree, and I currently make just under 100K a year (before taxes) up in the Canadian oil sands.
Now, I work roughly 90 hours a week for three weeks straight, I hate my job, and its FRIGGIN cold in the winter, but its a great way to clear student debt. They hire loads of foreigners up here too, so if you're debt laden and can afford to move somewhere to work in a high-paying industry, I'd say go for it.
Good luck.
