I have a very simple problem OOPE, for which I need your expert advice. I've recently decided to give the BG games a try since I've heard such amazing things, and my bioware fanboyism just doesn't feel right having never played them. So my simple question to you: Should I try playing the first one, or just jump right into the second, which I've heard is the best?

I played the first one to an extent, then it was sent back to the game rental place.
I suggest playing the first one. I enjoyed it, after I got past the first/second boss(First area's boss had this floor, in which parts fell from if you stepped on the wrong ones. So you end up dying about 100 times before figuring out the trail)

Some of the possible early encounters in the first one will kill you. I actually stopped playing when I hit the level cap of 9...
The second one and it's expansion are pure win.

Well it is a trilogy(BG1>BG2>BG2 expansion pack) and you can transfer your chracters, so I would suggest playing through it all from the start. It will also let you get familiar with the game engine, combat and classes. BG2 assumes you know all the basics and can be tough for a total D&D newbie or a solo player. BG1 is more hack&slash and exploring. BG2 is more story/quest driven and the NPCs provided have more unique quests, romances and story related interaction. BG2 is definitely more similar to the recent bioware releases than BG1, so choose BG2 if you don't want to play both games.
Install both games(full install, allows BG TUTU and no disc swapping) with the ToB expansion and update the games with lates patches. I strongly suggest that you use this little addition. After that I suggest you consider installing BG tweak pack and BG2 fixpack and tweak pack. There are a lot of content packs too, but they are more for people who are replaying the games.
The advantages of these are:
BG TUTU - Allows playing BG1 through BG2 engine. You will want this. There is nothing good in the BG1 engine compared to the BG2 engine and the setting available are very dated in BG1. BG2 engine just makes things easier and more enjoyable for you.
BG tweakpack - Easy to install(they all use the same program, have detailed read me files and recognise what other mods are installed) with loads of options. It allows you to make things more convenient and tweak the game to your preferences. Very good to have, but optional for a newbie.
BG2 fixpack - No reason not to install. All the community fixes done to the game during the years in one neat package.
BG2 tweakpack - Similar to BG tweakpack.

Awesome, thanks. I think I'm going to order the 4 in 1 pack from amazon so I get BG1 and BG2 plus their respective xpacks in one go. Seems like the easiest way to go about it anyway.

BG2 was and probably still is one of my favs, and has great replay value even when using just vanilla, not to mention all the little additions here and there. Grab the first one though, sets the story and has some great characters!
The Icewind Dale series were also good, but nowhere near to what BG2 offered in terms of story/characters/gameplay.

Someone's making a conversion mod for DA:O, that may be what he means.
Another handy mod: http://gibberlings3.net/widescreen/ - does what it says on the tin :D Careful not to make the resolution too high though or you may have problems reading the text.
Finally, for those of us who have already played these games, I present this for your enjoyment: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=17135.0

Edited by: Sagesse on 11/09/2010 16:02:37 BG1 is great, has a couple of good expansions and there is a fan made hack that allows you to play BG1 on the BG2 engine (modern resolutions) with some fiddling as stated above .This was my first ever real exposure to either FRP on PC or D&D in general and have been hooked since
BGII is awesome, I highly recommend playing it through and then using one of the class specific walkthroughs to play it through again and see lots of stuff you will have missed.
IWD was ok, IWD 2 was just a hack and slash really which is ok if thats our thing

Baldur's Gate is a great game. I personally would play the first one if you can.
My boyfriend and roommate are playing it again in co-op mode. If you have windows 7 (maybe vista too) it will crash. We have run it in compatibility mode and admin and still it crashes randomly. It has to do with some coding in the original disks. My roommate who runs windows XP has no issues.

I'll third using Tutu, it's an excellent wheeze. Also, ToB is hilarious with a 130% magic resist monk - punching dragons to death never gets old.
Also also, IWD2 is seriously underrated IMO - while it doesn't have the same level of "epic story" as the BG series, there are wonderful small-scale roleplaying opportunities scattered the whole way through, with some really nice class/race dialogue options. Plus the "what glacier?" line, which still cracks me up.

As said above, play them in order following the story... or have a go at Planescape Torment, which was made around the same time using the same engine and mechanics, but with a gritty story and setting full of pure awesome and delightful weirdness, instead of your standard fantasy setting.

follow this advice!
Also Bows are over powered so have as many characters with them as possible and charm type spells will win you most fights.
it really is worth play IMO. BGII is one of my all time favorite games and I am playing it through again!
I would love to see another BG just not with the newer style game play. I want the traditional turn based from these games.

This, also has the most refined gameplay and engine and an awesome New Game + feature.

Listen what everybody says, play them in order (and expansions too) to get the full story, as it is really one epic story....
And when you finish those, go for Planscape Torment!!

Heheheh, I'd forgotten how horribly overpowered "protection from magic" was
And yeah, I think on my monk playthrough I used protection from undead and punched him to death. Happy days.

Protection from Undead is at least as crazy. They don't even recognise your presence, so won't buff themselves or summon except for spell triggering.
Remember, the day comes when Tiax will point and click!
