Leet researchers with lots of science-peen are calling modern musicians a bunch of brainless, deaf n00bs.
I thought there was a reason why everything keeps sounding too loud and not rich enough.
Eventually rock musicians will only be able to play songs with one note... I was going to post a link of Mr Bean playing the keyboards in the olympics, but the IOC decided to be a bunch of arses and blocked the youtube links. What do you get when you cross an owl and a bungee cord? |

So that song is about aimlessly spinning around... I can see an EVE theme in it. Clever, very clever... "We want your help to convince management to develop Incarna into 3rd person shooter dungeon raiding with friendly fire in nullsec space..."

Actually what killed music was the switch from Analog to Digital.
Digital music is like "microwaved food". "Pasteurized" music if you will.
Ironically the switch to Digital also seriously put the hurt on the profitability of making music with mp3's and all.
Most people have never heard real quality analog recording/playback equipment. If you have and your not deaf, you would know it's x10 times better than digital. It's just most peoples experience with analog was the 99.00$ stereo they bought from Kmart. |

First, we should take into account the advent of 12-bar blues, which might have contributed a bit.
Second, coming off of the era of jazz, musical theory wanking isn't as popular as it once was...it's not as common to see music that's complicated for the sake of being complicated. (I'm looking at you, free jazz)
Third, these "simpler" songs as often as not follow a pentatonic scale in some form or another, which is in established music theory is about as natural as it gets for the human mind. (science linky, watch this)
That aside, music hasn't gotten dumber s much as the people that market it have gotten smarter. The catchy stuff is what gets marketed, because it's easy to market, but if you look away from the top 100, there's really a lot of well-written music still coming out and selling well because it's good, not because the guy on tv said to buy it.
Have a look at these fairly popular songs. and tell me there isn't some great musicianship involved:
John Mayer- In Repair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HowlAlZoIF4 making of-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eWrQzNJgC8
Dave Matthews Band - Where Are You Going http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjykrjAS5bQ&feature=relmfu
KT Tunstall- Black Horse & The Cherry Tree (live...she's f*cking awesome with that looper ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulyoxdhHrIs
Jason Mraz & Colbie Callait- Lucky (live) (check out the harmony) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAetEUGwAsU
...and that's all mostly singer/songwriter stuff. Go a tad farther off the beaten path, look somewhere besides the radio, and...well:
Dream Theater- The Dark Eternal Night In (studio video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkF4JD2rO3Q
Halo 2 theme featuring Steve Vai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu6PxjkU5R0
Metallica & the SF Symphony Orchestra- No Leaf Clover (tell me this isn't cool?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd9ohpDDCRU
I could do this all night... Triple rep Myrms are like what you'd get if you strapped a beehive to Robocop. |

This i actually agree with 100%. There is a lot of music that few people will know that is really well made and catches your interest. Im going to add in two links (neither are new new but they arent that old either ;) ). Sorry but both of them will also be in Norwegian.
Kaizers Orchestra - 170 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ookuLGzK8Bo
Seigmen - D+&derlein http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMeHf65_aIQ
But yes in general i dont listen to much "new" music anymore since what is being advertised is..well in general not something i react on,and i dont go to festivals or odd bar concerts anymore so i dont hear much "unadvertised" music.
But i also think it has something to do with just simply getting older. Some of the music that i found great when i was younger is highly disliked by others now at that age,but i still enjoy listening to it because it reminds me about a different time and places. New music dosent have this obviusly, thus i find my self listening to the same music for years and years and ask my daughter to turn down the sound because the neighboors will think we are killing the cats

Popular music is, indeed, getting worse - however, unpopular music can shine, however rare it is.

Well DUH! Pop music isn't music because it's not played with instruments anymore; it's not the pop music of yesteryear. Of course it all sounds the same because it all IS the same.
Metal and rock are the only genres (including all their respective subgenres) of popular music left in which real musicians are required to actually have some semblance of musicianship and songwriting talent.
But then again, pop music was never about music anyway. |
