I recently read an article about Grid Fu. Being rather new and lacking much experience I wondered how many corps actually use this to their advantage? Is it a common tactic or more of a trump card?

Actually bending grids to your advantage is pretty rare, not many people invest the time and effort into it.
However, knowing the rough sizes of the grids around certain areas can be very useful, and using bookmarks to travel to different places on grid or to quickly move between off-grid and on-grid is very common. ------------------------------------------

I'm pretty sure manipulating grids is an exploit.

No, it's not an exploit.

pro tip. cans will extend viewable grid so long as you stick it within grid in the first place.

Here's the pdf that first comprehensively explained it.

Since when is understanding game mechanics and adapting stratedgy accordingly a ****ing exploit?
If you want a real simple example of manipulating grids burn away from a station till ppl outside fall off grid. turn around burn back till they reappear on overview jettison something then continue on they will stay ongrid another 250km or so rinse repeat. Unless there is already 'anything' to create a grid next to station grid, you can keep extending station grid
as another example, if there was a cloaky 300k out or so say watching the station on dscan or even someones probe out, that object would generate another grid bordering station grid and it would stay put and after jettisoning and continuing you would still go of grid although you may have compressed the border and thats how you can also compress space around a pos for tactical advantage, they arent 'on-grid' to target and engage until well within pos defense range

We saw someone using grid-fu to expand the grid so that NPC's would not attack them and eventually switch off so the player could then come back and complete a site solo.
