Recently an old and popular topic came up again: How to protect cargo from the eyes of others.
It annoyed me a bit, that you get at least 3 different answers to that question. It's said that ... - password protected containers help, - password protected audit log containers help, - contract boxes help.
Some of you might know the 4th and true answer already (tl;dr): Nothing helps!
To see it with my own eyes, I set up a little situation where my alt wants to smuggle alcohol, tobacco and firearms - to give ATF something to care about.
- Alcohol went into a contract box
- Tobacco into an audit log container (password protected)
- Firearms into a GSC (password protected)
Here is what happened:
Some other facts I found out, while trying this
- Wares that are illegal in any region are not allowed in courier contracts
- In fact those wares don't seem to be allowed in any kind of contract (I tried item exchange)
- Audit Log Containers can be password protected and when another character gets his fingers on them, he needs the password to perform the configured actions
- but he can use the "Retrieve Password" function to get the password send by mail (which makes a password public that you might use on other objects as well)
- he can simply reconfigure the container, so it does not require the password for any actions any more
- he can not repackage the container for some weeks, if it has logged actions
- Giant Secure Containers can be password protected
- but the password will only be used when they are anchored in space
- the password is not needed to take items from it, when it is in station
- the container can be repackaged to get rid of the password
Hope this clears it up for some people and reduces the rumours. Oh, and I didn't post it in C&P because those guys probably know anyway.

Well there is one (1) thing that helps protect cargo from prying eyes, the corporation bays of an Orca or other vessel that has these bays onboard.

Yeah, forgot that, but was more thinking about the different containers. Thanx, nevertheless.

You wanna try this and post your results here:
Put the Small Arms into the GSC; now contract the GSC. Now run the cargo scanner on the contract package.

The scanner isn't able to scan a container that is inside a container...
But if this appears in someone scanner it will also mean that if he had the work to hide is cargo then it will probably mean that he is transporting something of value...

Of course do remember that when they see a Giant Secure Container that has been contracted and is being "hidden" they will gank you, because you have gone through the effort of hiding the stuff. So they think "hey, they have hidden it...must be valuable" *gank*. Stop whining. |

Not necessary, you could just transport ordinary giant secure containers.

This is why I love flying around in a overly tanked hauler - navy augoror is great - and either shove cans in cans or put a single t2 bpc in the cargo. Put it on auto pilot a few laps around Jita while you are away and the fireworks will work as a screensaver. Parrots, commence!

You can't put other storage containers into storage containers. When you do so, you'll get a warning about that messing up the space-time-continuum or something.

All the cargo scanner lists is the container. The scanner player wouldn't even know it was contracted.
As we speak, I have a freighter transporting 5 empty GSCs to be used at destination. No one's ever tried ganking me when I've done so.

No, because hauler characters who are playing the game rather than the forums have been doing this forever. No suicide gank squad is going to risk 20 BSs on a freighter potentially carrying 5000 units of Afterburner I.

True, except for putting containers into courier contracts, which produces a courier package, which technically is a kind of a container.

I believe it does, you should try it out and tell us what happens
Though I imagine if too many people start doing it, the nerf will be swiftly applied, minus the lube.

Main post updated with new insights.
Note a few things guys: - when I did that "wares in a GSC in a contract" thing I did not use illegal wares, because I had put them back on the market already. It was just alcohol in there. Now I tried again with small arms and it told me I cannot put illegal wares into a contract (although they where in a GSC). So no hiding from customs this way. - Empty GSCs do not show up on scan! So if a GSC shows up, something must be hidden inside a contract!

You can also create a courier contract for courier packages (so you have a plastic wrap inside your plastic wrap!). I don't know if you can nest them deeper than that though.

You can also set it up to need a password to be able to reconfigure it. I dont know if that helps the security any.

True, I overlooked that. But I just tried and you can also get the configuration password send by mail, if it is in your hangar.

What if you put useless **** in with the courier package, will it just show the junk and not the package inside the container?
