Hi all,
Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum; as it most probably is as I don't have permissions it seems to post anywhere else.
First my system spec:
Acer Aspire 7750G Intel core i5 x2 Radeon HD7670M 1GB 6GB RAM 750GB HDD BiIOS V- Modified to prevent dynamic switchable graphics, graphics card have to be switched manually in catalyst control panel 1600x900 native resolution
So let me start from the beginning. I downloaded Eve a couple of nights ago, thinking I'd give it another shot as it had been several years since I'd last tried it. Eventually the download completed and I installed, however when I attempted to start the game from the launcher, my screen flickered several times and then reverted back to the desktop. However music did start to play so this was a clue that it was probably a graphical issue. Nonetheless I couldn't immediately find an answer to my problem in the FAQs, So I tried the repair tool several times then tried deleting cache and settings folder, however to no avail. Then I thought perhaps that I could try a fresh install, possibly the original install was corrupted. So I redownloaded and the issue reoccured. Meanwhile I was trawling the forums to see if anyone else was having this issue. It seems switchable graphics are a known issue, (especially for HP laptops and Acer-same thing?) and you can change to window mode with Alt+Enter and play like that.
It was great to find out this, however it still jarred a bit for me so I commenced playing around with the graphics settings.
So it seems that you can start the game in 'Window mode' initially, then change the setting to 'Fixed Window Mode', ensuring that the resolution is set to the default for your monitor, in my case 1600x900. Then you can change to 'Full Screen Mode'. I commenced to ramp back up the graphics settings, now they are at everything max except Anti Aliasing.
Everything is looking good with one exception, I can't see any lasers, the screen will not shake, rocket contrails etc... which is terribly annoying.
So has anyone found a workaround for my final problem?
In summary: Window mode->Fixed window mode(native resolution)->Full screen mode
One would think that with the prevalence of these laptops that a solution from CPP would be forthcoming, a lot of other new players wouldn't have even bothered going past the first attempt at playing

Update drivers?
Also it's CCP, not CPP.
Personally I'd stay in fixed windowed mode. It feels like full screen but is easier to alt tab :D
You have everything enabled in the middle column? cause missile, turret effects, and camera shake are all toggleables....
Maybe try play with running the game in admin mode, what it sounds like is that maybe those particular setting didnt stick when you turned them back on and your settings file didn't get saved with the new settings... The Drake is a Lie |

I had the issue with my lasers not showing up.
You're not going to like the fix:
1. Backup your computer. 2. Format the hard drive that your operating system is installed on. 3. Reinstall the operating system, taking care to use current hardware drivers and to update said operating system (it's the updating that seems to take an age).
Solved it (if a big hammer)! |

Thanks for the quick responses:
I have everything enabled in the middle column with no effect. I also have the most up to date drivers currently available, I could get more up to date drivers, however I would be looking at using 3rd party modified drivers in that case. I really don't want to go down that road if I can avoid it.
I've tried running the game in admin mode however with no effect.
@ Joshua,
That's a rather large hammer and one I'm not going use if it can be avoided at all, especially considering that it's a relatively clean build. Computer is only 2 months old.
EDIT:
Shamfaced I had deselected all the options, problem is now solved, thanks again for the quick responses |

I had a similar problem once; turns out my tablet driver was trying to take focus constantly, allowing me to only start games in windowed mode. Is your laptop a touch screen, or is the windows handwriting recognition running? (Could be unrelated, but it was the first thing that came to mind) |

Hi Lilliana,
No it`s not touch screen, nor is the windows handwriting recognition running. This seems to be a known issue with switchable graphics |

Similar situation. Currently running a Samsung with Intel + Radeon setup.
Turns out it doesn't recognize openGL games without custom drivers, and Samsung states that their older models don't have the capability for a BIOS update in the same vein as HP or Acer. Even with custom drivers, it does funny things in EVE if I don't play in windowed mode. When I play any game, the Intel card shows as the only one available even when the Radeon successfully takes over. (Edit for clarity: EVE uses DirectX)
The problem isn't with CCP, it's with AMD. I've gotten mine to work, but AMD-switchable laptop solutions seem to be based largely on vendor.
First thing I would try in your situation is to go into the CCC and change all your 3D settings to application-controlled. Let EVE dictate what to do with AF, AA, and the like.
If you're feeling brave, here's where I get driver updates. Occasionally plays sober |

Yeah you'd think with the switchable disabled in bios there should not be an issue, but there is.
If I recall correctly, this was fixed by changing the bios setting to it's normal default of auto switchable. The game starts on your integrated graphics, then you go into Catalyst and tell it to run on your dedicated card. Kind of a pain, but that was the fix.
Before this I would go to start up the game, the screen would flicker and my computer would completely lock up forcing a hard shutdown/restart. I really disliked that part. The game was trying to start on the integrated and that was disabled in the bios... the worst part was not knowing this and trying to troubleshoot.
All other games had no such issues with switchable disabled in bios, only this one. Late to the conversation, but hope it helps to whomever else comes across this vexing issue. |
