All I can think of is Gunnery V a must

Edited by: LHA Tarawa on 13/08/2010 23:13:56 There are 3 kinds of tank (ways to avoid (or delay) your ship going boom). You need alteast 1 of them... preferably more than one. Speed, armor and/or shield. This includes stuff like the capacitor skills, not just the hardeners, reppers.
Drones if you are flying anything larger than frig (and even for some frigs.. Dramiel, you know I'm talking to you!)
Skill in the race/ship you are flying.
And, yes, weapons.
Edit: Oh, and ECM. You need to be able to tackle, jam, disrupt, paint, or something... and be able to fit some stuff to prevent the jam from happening to you. Many fights are won and lost on ewar and logistics... but logistics is a specialty field. Everyone should have some responsibility for helping put some ewar on the enemy.

"Core" Support Skills include, but are not limited to:
Energy Management Energy Systems Operation ALL of the Navigation skills (except the jump drive ones, unless you're going for capitals) Hull Upgrades
Beyond this you need at least one type of tank: Armor or Shield.
Shield skills can be found in the Engineering tab and include: Shield Management Shield Operations Shield Upgrades Tactical Shield Manipulation and all the shield compensation skills (EM, Thermic, Kinetic, Explosive).
Armor skills can be found in the Mechanic tab and include: Mechanic Repair Systems and all of the armor compensation skills (EM, Thermic, Kinetic, Explosive).
Note: don't be fooled by the difference in size of the lists... in a one on one slug-out between someone with perfect shield skills and someone with perfect armor skills, there is a good chance that the shield tanker will win. However, one of the main reasons Armor is preferred is due to the massive passive buffers it can create and the fitting requirements for remote armor repair modules is not outrageously high. _______________________

The single most important skill, the one that takes a lot of experience to use and decides 100% of close fights:
Thermodynamics.
Rest is rudimentary: ship to 5, T2 weapons, tank/cap/auxiliary skills to at least 4.

People might be able to help more if you explain what ships/race you intend to start with but if you are doing Gunnery stuff then look up all the supporting skills on the market - off top of head things like Rapid Firing, Trajectory Analysis, Surgical Strike etc. -----------------------------

I disagree with all who posted above. The most important skill you need to train early on is Advanced Weapon Upgrades as high as you can get it. Without this, you will never fit your ships as well as you could have done.

This. Many, many fights are lost not because of character skills, but because you are surprised, shocked, or in disarray because something unexpected happens, and you're sitting there wondering what to do as your enemy blasts chunks out of you.
That said, a few pointers...
For Minmatar, you'll mainly want gunnery skills and navigation skills. You should also be capable of a good armor or shield tank, depending on your ship. You'll only need active shield tanking skills if you focus on the cyclone, sleipnir, or maelstrom. If you plan on using the Phoon, you'll also want Torpedo skills to mostly V.
For Amarr, if you're going with T1, you'll want decent skills with lasers. The Arbitrator, Curse, and Pilgrim need T2 Medium drones as well as high drone support skills to be useful. For Khanid T2 ships you'll want decent missile skills and sometimes passive shield skills. Otherwise, you'll mainly want armor tanking skills.
For Gallente, you'll want a mix of drone skills and hybrid turret skills. You'll generally armor buffer tank, but Gallente have some ships which have bonuses for armor reppers, so follow those. The Dominix can be flown with a neut setup with literally no hybrid skills, and you can be support with neuts and drones. (You'll want lots of drone skills, though.) The Lachesis is a missile boat, so get decent missile skills if you want to fly one of those.
And finally, for Caldari, you can make do with nothing but shield and missile skills. The only time you need hybrids are if you plan on flying a Ferox or Rokh. Otherwise, enjoy making streams of pretty missile spam. You'll want ECM skills as well if you plan on flying Scorpions, Widows, Falcons, Rooks, Blackbirds, Griffins, or Kitsunes.
Note that Ship Command skills should be trained well REGARDLESS of what race you're flying.

In addition to the above suggestions, which are all good, Electronics and Engineering allow you to fit more than a pea-shooter to your ship.

Take your phoon fit and shove it up your fittings blog, i hope you are very proud of your failphoon, if you want to fly puretorps train caldari. this post is about skills.
I havent seen anyone mention targeting skills, but alot can be decided by who gets lock first, all your E-WAR will count on this, for 5% increased locking speed train 'Signature Analysis'.
the skill 'Targeting' will also be very handy this will give you one extra target available to have locked and ready to shoot, or get a point on before you switch firepower over.
Other Electronics skills are more specialised.

The best skill is learning how to properly space the time between each missile firing from your drake so that it looks like you never stop firing.

I think not. I've also had more than a fair amount of success with Shield/gank Brutixes and Bait tanked doubleplatted small gun rax's.
Admittedly the T1 frigs kind of suck but outside of that you have some very useful PVP ships.

Honestly, look at some of the defense certificates. I'm not say get them, but well... they can give you a good idea of what you may need to help stay alive longer.
For example, Hull Upgrade... sounds like a skill you wouldn't use much in PvP, but if you armor tank, each level in Hull Upgrade gives you 5% more armor HP.
Also, do you plan to work in a fleet? If so, you may want to look into the remote repair/shield transfer skills, and possibly the associated drone skills. Being able to assign a flight of medium shield rep drones to help spider tank can go a long way.
Really, what skills depends on the ship you fly, whether you fly in a fleet or not, and even how you like to play. No sense training gun skills if you plan to stay with Stealth Bombers your whole time, or training drone skills if you plan to stick with non-gallante/faction frigates.

How to train for the ship you want to fly in pvp:
1) Find an all T2 or T2/faction fit ship you want to fly. 2) Download EFT and Add your character 3) Fit ship on all level 5s( make sure its possible) 4) Apply your character. 5) Train what is needed to get in the ship. 6) Wait long time for training
To improve your chances of being successful:
1) Select module/drone in EFT 2) Click Requirments tab 3) Expand affecting skills. 4) train those to 4-5
Also: 1) Relevant ship skill for that ship should be at 4 or 5( Minnie BS skill for example) 2) Other relevant skills: A) Thermodynamics - for overloading B) Engineering - For powergrid C) Energy Management - For Cap D) Electronics - For CPU E) Shield Management - For more Shield HP F) Hull Upgrade - For more Armor G) Mechanic - For more Hull HP H) Navigation - For faster base sub warp speed.
Most of these will be required for the tech 2 modules you need. You should do shield armor and hull hp regardless of tank type to level 5. You should try to have at least level 3 in all relevant skill before you actually attempt to use the ship in pvp, unless you want to just throw it away. Being properly trained in the ship fit makes a rather large difference in performance.
Also in Pvp most ships are speed, range, or most commonly buffer tanked. Shield tanks are superior in all ways to armor tanks except the minor flaw that they use mainly mids which is heavily used for ewar. Thus you have a trade off. Armor buffer tanks are slower if plated.Active tanks are usually fail in pvp though you may have some luck with them solo or in a small gang.

a lot of good suggestions in this thread. Thorian Baalnorn makes much sense too.
most important skills to get fast (assuming frig piloting since you are new and want to pvp): 1) t2 guns 2) t2 ab and being able to use mwd (speed is often the most important factor in frig fights) 3) fitting skills. advanced weapon upgrades etc so you can fit the modules you need 4) thermodynamics 5) gunnery support skills to decent levels (4), and navigation skills up (acceleration control/agility etc)
if caldari just ignore the rest an skill for t2 missiles/BC V and fly a drake.
