Just curious as I have 45 extra dollars per month now. Not an I quit thread I have a dim light at the end of the tunnel that says eve may one day turn around but its very dim. What I am tho, is curious if world of tanks is really that good. I tried HoN which everyone was playing, but alas I wasnt very good at it, and the hate in that game is as bad as eve on noobs. Its time to find a new waste of time.

I've been losing interest in the game a lot recently, due to numerous factors, so I unsubbed my highsec alt. I'm waiting to see how brilliant the next expansion is before I decide to finally call it a day or not, and I imagine many people are in a similar situation to me.
In other news, WoT is good :)

It fills the arcade niche I've been lacking since I quit navyfield. Though I can see it getting old if all there is, is random battles

League of Legends is a little more newbie friendly than HoN from what I hear. It's pretty easy to play free though too, really not much of a disadvantage (free characters cycle every week, and you can unlock everything except skins with free points you get from fights.)
I've found I'm not too much for that style of game though, so I don't play it much at all. World of Tanks plays more like Navy Field, but with non-sprite graphics and quite possible LESS grind. At the end of the day it's mostly just random battles, not like Eve at all.

max you'll ever get is 30 on 30.
As an ex navyfield player myself (cptwallace from MO server), these games typically start to unravel when you get close to 50 on 50.

wot is still in closed beta so free for now, and seems like 45/month in wot would get you a lot. although eh, doubt you'd want to spend that much on it. hell probably better off buying battlefield or something and then not being tempted by a cash shop.

On that note - Battlefield 1942 (Yes, the 2002 one) is better than WoT. <3 El Alamein.

Aberdeen or Coral Sea, pick your poison.
I kinda liked the boat fights on Midway but it seems not many other people did.

Try Aces High 2...
It's a WW2 combat game, with Tanks, Aircraft and sea battles.. Graphics aren't out standing but some of the best PVP as far as MMO type games go..
This is one of my old fights.. it's a bit slow paces but great game for PVP..

World of Tanks is planning on having some sort of territory control model which makes it the closest to Eve. That and the notion that "you" are always a vehicle. I don't expect it will be nearly as in depth as Eve's system though.

Oh don't worry, they're working on a new expansion "Locomoting in Buildings" or LIB for short, this will be a very exiting expansion that lets you get out of your tank and explore your barracks.
Expected 2017.

Never looked back to vanilla bf42 since Forgotten hope mod. Should still have some players, otherwise there's Forgotten hope 2 for bf2, which is alot better tbh. More cautious but alot more exciting tank battles.

The thing to remember about World of Tanks is that it is still in beta so it doesn't have all the planned features implemented yet.
However, in my opinion the game shows great promise. Game mechanics are a fair balance between simulator and arcade (leaning a little bit on the arcade side) so it is not and never will be a hardcore sim. It's more like a blend between FPS and tank sim. The action is (usually) pretty fast-paced which is good IMHO.
On the negative side the game is somewhat grindy.

WoT is nice FPS, but don't expect that it could replace EVE (or any other 'real' MMORPG, tbh).

Edited by: Nye Jaran on 12/08/2010 19:28:45 It's fun. It's not earth shatteringly good, it's still very much feature poor. I like it because a battle runs a max of 30 minutes. It's very easy to log in, play a round or two, and then log out.
The team interaction is a bit hit / miss though. Sometimes you get a good group of people who understand basic tactics. Then you get the Zergers who think the answer to everything is to rush.
My biggest gripes about it so far are:
- Bots have already started showing up
- Tank Destroyers aren't properly balanced between teams yet
- No team play yet. Should be coming soon
- Clans not implemented yet.
With the exception of the first item, it's nothing unexpected, given the "closed" beta status of the game.
Also, anyone else see any people with CCP in front of their names playing? I've seen one.

Whenever I go into a game I seem to find all the Eve players.
Wonder why that is :P

Same situation here. I'm actually skilling my characters up for the purpose of selling them right now. If the next expansion is good and some of the big issues get fixed, I might change my mind. If not, I should make a good bit of ISK.

I was having some good fun with this game here and there, tonight the GMs showed up in chat however.
What a bunch of rude and unprofessional people. Threatening to ban people for arguing with them (in a public chat channel), telling them to "stop being lazy and read the rules".... all in response to someone using capital letters to emphasize about 2 words in a sentence for emphasis and them yelling at them for using "caps".
Completely changed the tone of the game for me seeing this interaction unfold. I don't really feel comfortable playing now.
I've saved a chat log that I may post some place, but it requires a lot of manual formatting, as it didn't save the page breaks/wrapping properly.
ALSO:
They instituted a system where users can screenshot and email reports of "teamkilling". They said they will ban teamkillers. What a giant bunch of BS. Firstly, they'd have to be able to read minds to know that even the worst offender was doing it on purpose. Secondly, why the hell would you put friendly fire into a game if you're going to ban people for interacting with that "feature" of gameplay?
This game seems more and more like some dudes running a game out of their garage. Not that that's a bad thing... but with something that high population and that much press and money behind it, it kind of is.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I just made you read my signature. |
