I've been playing video games for 33 years now and I'm starting to feel it in my wrists and finger joints. I'd like to start a thread dedicated to ways to reduce the amount of clicking in Eve. Here's some to start, but post your ideas here:
- Be able to assign a bookmark to a "home" station/location within a system. Assign a hot key to that bookmark. Clicking the hot key would cause you to either warp to that location within 0 km, or dock with it if your BM is a station.
- A module that, when turned on, will automatically lock on to wrecks, starting with the closest wrecks. As wrecks are salvaged and disappear from the target lock, new wrecks are automatically targeted.
- A module that, when turned on, will automatically lock on to roids of a certain type, starting with the closest roid of that type. As roids are mined and disappear from the target lock, new roids of that type are automatically targeted. Would need a module for each roid type.
- A setting that you could toggle on/off for loot consolidation. When turned on, loot from a wreck would move automatically to your cargohold once you salvage the wreck
- Assign hot keys to system bookmarks. Hitting the hot key would automatically set that system as the auto-pilot destination.

- Right now, if you don't want Eve to auto select which drones get launched when you click the launch button, you have to individually select each drone, and then click the launch button. I'd like the ability to hold down the SHIFT or CTRL key to select multiple drones, and then have all of those selected drones launch when I click the launch button.

Inb4 some idiot says "you're supposed to click that often so that the game is a challenge".
-goes to find a baseball bat-
Anyways. I'm not so sure about auto-collecting loot, but the bookmark hotkeys would be a great addition. As it is there are many bookmarks your ship can use (F1-F8, Ctr+F1-F8, etc) but no ship has that many modules to assign to them. It would be nice to be able to move boosters or bookmarks and the like into these slots.

Most of what you are asking for are essentially macros. Automation is never going to happen. You can already warp to and dock with a station, and you CAN ctrl or click to select multiple drones to launch, or you can just group them to make it even easier. I can't help but feel like this is a troll thread.

yes, more ieas please they are not macroes btw, they are hotkeys, and we already have an auto-targeting system, now it's time to make it usefull/

Make the buttons down the left side close with one click. Right now, you can open and close the Fitting window with one click. The others open with one click, but then you have to scroll over and click the window's X button to close it.

I cant agree with the auto-targeting of roids, macros are a problem, lets not make it easier for them, same goes for auto-salvaging.
On the flipside, I have no problem with auto-looting, and would not mind warp to hotkeys, especially if they can be set to go to any bookmark of a certain name, so I can make bookmarks called "safespot" in every system I go through, and just hit ctrl-s or something to warp to it.

When you are on autopilot, the next gate in your path is marked yellow in the Overview, making it easy to pick out where you need to jump next. I'd like to suggest that if you have an active mission in your journal that requires picking up or dropping something at a specific station, the station would be colored in the Overview.

The first computer game that ever caused me pain and also ended up in my needing to replace my mouse was Diablo.
I'd suggest you look at swapping the L & R mouse buttons, re-examine your seating situation/posture, consider a vertical mouse or if an extreme issue a mouse/foot or additional offhand device that relieves some extra clicking. I've seen one device that allows you to use one hand to move the cursor and the other to perform clicking. Vertical mice range from $25+ and everything else goes up from there.
PS: I'm an internet doctor, which means I have medical license I made in mspaint.

My wrists cramp up just thinking about Diablo 3...
Yeah, it probably is age making things worse. That being said, I used the carpal tunnel example to try to highlight the need for streamlining the user interface. There are many places within the game where 1-2 clicks might replace what is currently 3 or more clicks to open and close windows. I'm very much a fan of streamlined user-interfaces and I go nuts when it takes 5 clicks to do what can be accomplished with 1-2 clicks.

I have to say... that is 1 feature i missed from WoW. Killing an raid boss by sitting at me PC and press my nose against the 1 key every few seconds to fire off my whole cycle.

Edited by: Covert Kitty on 24/08/2010 15:08:23 I concur with the OP, eve needs more hotkeys and needs to be less mouse intensive in general. Many parts of the UI can also be improved and streamlined.

If nothing else, perhaps each meny item could get a hot key? That can arguably already be done with a mouse macro and should not make the game more macro friendly. It should also be quite simple to add without major changes to the game or UI.
That way if you want to warp to 0 at asteroid field II you'd press something like; right click in space, 1, 2, 1.

While I don't agree with all the suggestions from the OP, I do agree that this game is too click-intensive. For industry, can there be some love? How about the dialogs popping up with reasonable defaults? How about the dialogs remember what I did last time and use those as the defaults?
Being forced to change the source and destination bays for manufacturing jobs EVERY SINGLE TIME seems ridiculous. Not to mention tedious and a really poor example of UI.

I too have been palying video games from an early age when I fist played black and white table tennis.
One thing to do to keep from getting carpal tunnel is too get away from the keyboard and the constant repetition that causes carpal tunnel.
Maybe buy some squeeze balls that therapist's use to help strengthen muscles or do basic hand exercises like making a fist very rapdily and then slowly. Move the fingers around seperately in different motions.
Carpal Tunnel is just one of those things that we as gamer's need to deal with. If you want to enjoy what you do then you have to except the risk involved.

This is a list off the top of my head of common actions I try to perform that are hindered by the current UI design, leading to extra clicks.
- Dragging to ore hold or corp hangar should auto ask if you want to move partial stack - instead of popping up an error message.
- Scanner probes should have an option to change the size of all at once
- PI should have the ability to restart all stopped extractors, for X time window
- Rorqual crunching jobs should default to the tab that the BPO is in/or the cargo bay
- Warping to hidden belts/complexes pops up a window you have to click through, center of screen, this isn't necessary or should have an option to remove this
- Can't right click on ship to open drone bay. Have to go through fitting tab
- Can't right click a fleet commander in fleet finder and show info on them
- Can't remove something from the trade window once it's been added. Have to cancel and redo it all
- Entering starbase passwords every time you change grid. Why can't a local buffer resubmit your entered password to the new server every time you change grid?
- Copy/paste doesn't link names (i.e. <url=showinfo:1383//1651352239>IsiL'Nom
)
- Too many focus stealing windows, like donate money, edit chat message, manufacturing final confirmation page
- Log out should take you back to character selection screen, not restart the entire client
- Chat windows, chat stacks on top of each other/runs off the bottom of screen. Have to resize to fix it
- In the fleet window, whenever there's a change it resets the entire window back to top, which makes using the window impossible in large fleets
- Making any changes to inventory during contract stack splitting resets the entire window, making you scroll back down again, very annoying
- Scanning, the probe boxes can be waaay too dark against the background, making it very hard (the work around we shouldn't have to do, is to turn the camera upside down)
- Anchoring mods should have the same scaling grab bars for the mods as scanning does (impossible to see when zoomed out). Or at least let us center the camera focus on the theoretical anchoring spot while in anchoring mode
- Chat windows will often separate from each other into various windows when you log in. This creates needless clicks to reorganize each time.
- Offering a jump clone to someone will leave you locked focus in that window until they accept/decline, should be fire/forget
- Can't see what drone health is in the drone bay. Have to launch them first. Extra clicks
- Can't cancel target locking once the process has begun
- When players disconnect from the game, it often won't register on the contact's list. You have to remove and re-add them to your list to register them as offline. Again with the extra UI clicks to work as a work-around for something that shouldn't be broken.

To everyone that has offered suggestions on how to deal with carpal tunnel, I appreciate it, but I do take brakes and I stretch, and so on.
In retrospect, I think I should have titled this post "RSI Sux" -- With RSI standing for Repetitive Stress Injuries. RSIs come from doing the same action over and over again, i.e. right-clicking on a button. Reducing the number of clicks needed to perform tasks, and streamlining the UI is my goal here.

In the overview window, if you are getting scrammed/webbed/jammed etc., this shows up as a separate icon that floats over the ship that it is doing it. To find out which ship is doing it, you need to scroll up and down. Since this is in a table format, they should put this icon in a separate column, which could then be sorted just like all of the other pieces of information in the overview window. That would then allow you to sort the ships that are doing something to your ship, and reduce the amount of scrolling.

How about containers (GSCs, etc.) and storage holds that have the option to automatically
- Stack all items
- Sort all items by name/type

In regards to streamlining the UI:
Make it so that the overview can become fully customizable. Separate tabs can have different columns (Rather than all adopting the same columns, as it currently is).
Also, as far as EWAR goes- If you look at the "States" tab in settings, or something like that, you can select whether or not EWAR symbols appear when "Target is Jamming you" and stuff like that. You have the option to assign that a color, as well, but currently it does not do anything. I'd like to see those assigned colors actually do something (So say... a neutral starts target painting me, he starts blinking red. He starts webbing me, he starts blinking green).
Also, I'd like to see the assigned colors be more customizable as well. Give us a color slider so that, with the new variety of states, there is also more color variables to assign to them.
