It's sad that it took an EU ruling to knock sense in to Gates, it's cost him more than $600 million just to accept what we've all known, that bundling IE and WMP was not only anticompetitive but bloated the Windows OS. Ironically Windows will actually be a better OS as a result of this outcome.

Well I consider stuff like that to be not an anti-bill crusade, but anti-garbage one. If Windows turns out better as a result, well then more power to it.
Personally, I prefer linux for everything except gaming. --

Still though...this was a pale slap as far as Microsoft is probably concerned.
All they are doing is taking out a few video/audio bundles from Windows in Europe. Microsoft is in the US, everything will be made exactly the same as before, just one version for Euro's will take out a few software pieces...big deal.
Ain't going to change a darn thing about the Windows OS itself (codes etc), especially everywhere else in the world. Don't expect windows to improve or change, just expect other companies to start selling more audio/video software for you to install on windows...seperately and most likely at a cost.

Windows doesn't need IE to access the internet per se. But for general internet access it needs a browser, 'any' browser will do. In future, the sales person or website will 'ask you' what browser do you want specified with your Windows rig? As it currently stands you only get IE 'no questions permitted'. One of M$'s greatest tricks was it's ability to threaten manufacturers and retailers, and bamboozle consumers in to thinking Windows wouldn't work without IE. Even after the EU ruling, M$ shamelessly maintained... Originally by: M$ "We believe that the code removal remedy, obliging Microsoft to release a degraded version of the Windows operating system, will be harmful to consumers and competition..."
This statement reflects the heart of M$'s anti trust defence, which the EU rightly tossed out; because M$ were not able to prove that removing code from Windows would 'irreparably harm' the OS, even after reinsertion. Although they used the term 'degrade' there's mountains of public evidence to contradict this statement.
If anything IE, amongst other reasons, has been a constant liability to the uninitiated. Why force this upon consumers and deny them (and manufacturers and retailers) the right to choose a 'better' third party application?.
The sweetest part of the EU ruling is the precedent it sets. It means that M$ will no longer be able to use their dominance of the European market as an excuse to bundle key ancillary coding with Windows, whilst excluding competitors from doing the same (Netscape is a case in point). It also means competitors will be able to tailor their software to perform better with Windows - i.e. less crashes etc., That's a good thing for EU consumers (and for the likes of Xrac ) unless you happen to live in the US.

C'mon! A people who elect George Bush as president would certainly not able to even operate a slide rule. America has always imported its scientists and inventors from Europe. How else would they have got to the moon?

Edit; and the whole italy area was the birthplace of recorded reason
This is true, it was always germans and the english who got "lucky" in the science field. France didnt do bad either, but then it was stuck in the middle before telephones so some of it was bound to rub off!
George bush is a good thing. in a world of liberal lefties he is a welcome sigh of releif. his puppet masters/peers are the same old **** coughed up again. Old rummy and cheney are the evil doers though that is possibly to strong a word. they are inebreiated with their LONG TERM LIES though, possibly unable to grasp ANY facet of reality as a result. you should have HEARD their claims about the "ruskies" uber laser weapons of doom back in the 80's / 90's. "We gotta build more tanks and planes and ****, they got laser weapons of doom! and death rays and ****! we gotta prepare they are a threat to the whole civilized world" hehe, yeah right, but that was swallowed so deep it would make a ***** blush. hey presto, we have the same old trotsky before iraq.
Its not that crushing iraq was wrong that bothers me (i dont think it was), its is the simultaneous repeated lies told thoughout history to justify ending bad regiemes when a simple "we are america/britain, we are RIGHT and you are WRONG, stop (insert badness here) or we will replace you" would be much better.
They dont say that cause what is being stopped is what china / lots of other places do for sport every day. They cant be seen to have favourites so they spew ****e about the little nations to keep the big bad ones sitting pretty. Mind you korea et al will be a good stab at chinas legs.
Give tibet back you murdering stealing bastards.
