I just thought I'd make a topic for all the people who run EVE under Linux and have zero technical issues with it. Hopefully it might help persuade potential Linux adopters who are worried about EVE in Linux if they can see all the people doing it successfully.
As for me,

Running zenwalk linux 6.4, wine 1.1.44, on a geforce 8500 gt.
I guess I do have small hick-ups when patching, but I often times just dl the whole off-line installer of the client since I do an install for each of my accounts. |

When CCP started using BITS it all went to ****.
Luckily they're still providing the original patching method, just not auto-running any longer. Which begs the question of why they even bothered with BITS at all.
You can download and manually run each update from the patches webpage. Select your installed version and click "Find patch".
The other way is use the repair tool, like the old patch method, it actually works because CCP wrote it themselves.

Recently went full Linux on my laptop and the first thing I did was set up Eve. Bit of a fuss getting in the first time thanks to the missing font on the EULA (though the difficulty was more to do with my lack of Linux experience than anything else); once I'd sorted that out it was all good.
Running fine, no problems on PI, haven't faced patching yet but I reckon I can cope when it comes. All in all, everything's shiny

Using exclusively Linux to play the game since Trinity. At first with official client, then with WINE (with an impressive range of version upto the current 1.2). Both in Ubuntu 8.04, Gentoo unstable and now Ubuntu 10.04. On varying hardware platforms - i386, i686 and x86_64, single and multicore. Always with nVidia GPUs, upto my current 8800GT.
Lots of glitches, many problems, some serious breakage.
But so far, I've managed to solve everything, thanks to a wonderful dev effort (WINE) and user community (this and many other forums).
Hope helps. --- Kat |

I complied and installed wine 1.3.0 now and I haven't seen this glitch for a while, guess that solved it or something. Sorry I can't provide a screenshot. Oh and ... for the love of god you are reading my sig now.

today i upgraded wine from 1.1.42 (winehq) to 1.2 (selfcompiled). It's very smooth now, nearly like on windows (which got swept from the HDD some time ago).
The only glitch i'm experiencing is the white rectangle cursor (ATI card).
With 1.1.42 i got jump lags, but with 1.2 it runs _very_ well. *Thump up*
My current config is: - ATI fglrx 10.7 - kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian Squeeze) - Debian Squeeze with current patches
Hardware: ATI 5770 AMD Phenom 9950 BE 3Ware 9650-4LMP Raid 5 Creative X-FI
I can even use sound in Eve

My Eve works flawlessly except for 2 things:
1) The jukebox does not work (it scrolls endlessly without playing anything) however all other in-game sounds work fine. 2) I can not use the automatic update feature, but downloading the patch from the web site and patching works fine.
I am using Kubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with a NVidia 9800GT card. |

Basically same here. Arch64, wine-1.3, nVidia 8600GT. But yeah, you are obviously interested in my post because you're now reading my signature.

Edited by: Bill Lumberg on 29/08/2010 01:05:33 My Eve works wonderfully. Using Ubuntu 8.10, nVidia GT 240, AMD 64 4800+, Wine 1.2 (self compiled). No major tricks required aside from font setup, but I think that's just standard for Linux users anyhow. Only other trick I used was to have Wine run it on it's own virtual desktop to avoid alt-tab crashes. __________________________________________________

Here are all fine and works perfectly: AMD x2 6100+ Debian 6.0 Squeeze / kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64 Nvidia 8600GT driver 256.44 Wine self compiled 1.3.1 Gnome 2.30.2 + compiz
There are only two and not so dramaticaly issues for me at the moment: 1. The Game Music or Jukebox does now work for me(only sometimes in missions) (i also renamed the /res/Jukebox folder -> but no way...) 2. The autopatcher for the Gameupdates crahes sometimes and do not work correctly.
Performance is good, and some time i play on the same system and configuration up to 3-5 EVE clients/chars at the same time!!!
have fun lightmans

I've noticed that when the updater fails, I can attempt to repair it with the repair tool. This fails with a python exception. If I hit cancel, it'll try another repair. Once I do that repair, the patch works.

Just upgraded to Fedora 13, wine 1.2. nVidia 9800GT driver version: 195.36.31
All were default from packages, though I've been dragging the same .wine dir (and thus Eve installation) since Fedora 9, so haven't run into installation issues for eons.
Haven't had major issues since Empyrean age. Though Dominion did require me to upgrade my gfx card (Cos planets were SEXY).
Only issue i can report is that PI Customes Offices were multi colored as i approached, but i think they cleared that in the last minor patch. Oh and yes, jukebox does as others describe. But if i get nostalgic for Eve music, i just play it from Amarok or VLC and mix in my own music.
Otherwise, from what i remember of windoze, Fedora handles multi tasking a browser, spreadsheet or other activities with Eve far better.
In big fleet fights I do as well or badly as others with doze, sometimes better.

Perhaps this is what you are asking about?
I just discovered this uncharted planet today... I call it the Craigslist Planet:
http://i54.tinypic.com/2vd4128.jpg
I had a firefox window with a craigslist page up when this happened. Eve was running windowed and the corruption didn't occur until I warped to the planet (from the gate the planet looked normal).
Ubuntu x86_64 10.04 2.6.34-020634-generic. fglrx 10.7 hd5870eye6, wine 1.2 (1.2-0ubuntu1~lucidppa1).

I haven't seen that sort of behavior from Eve in a while but it was pretty common a couple years back with portraits. I'd regularly get pieces of the desktop showing up in them.
Once I was able to watch each bitmap being constructed in the bottom left of the screen. I could see each part of the face getting added to the picture. A couple of seconds per portrait ... Python at it's finest. :O

I have had a lot of problems with bad ATI drivers so I would not recommend anyone using ATI but lately it's been getting better and EVE now runs pretty smoothly. So I guess it's time for me to to join the no problems club.

Running EVE on Ubuntu 10.10 and WINE 1.3.4 on multiple screens with NVidia's TwinView. Works fine except for the Jukebox (renaming the jukebox folder helped).

I believe what you're looking for is "sh winetricks corefonts". Let me know if you have any more issues.

Everything runs flawlessly in a virtual desktop except for the jukebox:
* Kubuntu Linux 10.04 64-bit * NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 * Crossover Games 9.2.0 (based on Wine 1.2.1)
In Crossover Games 9.1.0 and prior versions I was able to make it work by using TbT78's trick (see Wine bug #21373), but the latest version seems to ship with its own "winemp3.acm"... which makes my client freeze as soon as the jukebox tries to play any music. Nevertheless, leaving it paused I experience no problems at all.

Getting Eve working was simple, I installed the Corefonts with winetricks, installed a DirectX 9 redist package I had on a CD then used winecfg to select the emulated system/sound driver... I use global settings for everything - if it refuses to work I use soemthing else
