I was running L4 kill missions in 0.8-1.0 systems and decided to get better loot so I switched to another agent in the midst of 0.5-0.6 systems. Both agents were kill mission specialists and I had standing of 9.9 with each and their quality was +9 and +11 so I assumed they were equivalent. I was surprised to discover that the missions in the lower sec systems were yielding significantly more revenue (bounties + rewards). To be sure, I collected statistics for 50 missions with each agent. All missions were run in Lonetrek.
Indeed, the cargo loot was much worse in the hisec systems; only about 70% of the value from losec systems. That was in line with my expectations. However, that is a small fraction of overall value. Wreck salvage was essentially even, which was a surprise. The total of bounties + agent rewards was 40% higher in the hisec missions. The total LPs, where most of the profit lies, was about 15% higher in the hisec systems. So obviously something else is going on.
The only other differences between the agents were:
(1) The losec agent was Home Guard/Security (Calgari) while the hisec agent was Republic Security/Internal Security (Minmatar).
(2) The mission mix was significantly different. The losec agent kept giving me turkeys like Massive Attack and that drove down the average substantially. OTOH, the hisec agent gave me very few dud missions.
(3) I got mostly Gurista/Blood missions for Home Guard and mostly Gurista/Angel missions for Republic. (Gurista was shared since I was running Republic missions in Calgari space.)
So I am pretty much convinced it was the mission mix that was the big problem. It simply dwarfed the loot difference for different sec levels.
Q1: Does anyone have another plausible reason for this discrepancy in overall earnings?
Q2: Have others observed this same thing?
Q3: Is the mission mix different by NPC, individual agent, or type of agent (kill missions only)?
Q4: Has anyone kept track of mission mixes for different agents and published it?

System's true security status affects an agent's effective quality. The lower the security status, the higher the effective quality. The higher the effective quality, the higher mission rewards.
I think it was like 5 or 8 effective quality level per 0.1 difference in security status.

What a load of crap! System Security has no effect on 'Effective Quality' whatsoever. System Security does, however, have an impact on LP Reward.

For the LP bonus, Security uses the social skills Militairy & Political connections, while Internal Security uses Bureaucratic and Militairy connections. This may explain the difference in LP you are observing.

Good point. I am L5 in Mil & Pol but only L3 in Bur. However, it is the Internal Security agent that is giving me the best missions.

As system sec decreases, the payout (reward + LP, not bounties/loot) increases. If a mission gives 6500 LP in a 0.7 sec system, it will give around 11k in 0.1 sec. I use that example as long ago I moved from a 0.7 sec system with a Q20 agent to a 0.1 sec with Q20 of the same corp. Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

While my sample size isn't that great, it goes counter to this. I am getting better LP rewards from the agent in 0.8 security than I am getting from the agent in 0.5.
So this seems to support the notion that it is really the mix of missions that is driving the data (i.e., the mission itself has more effect than the LP computations). You aren't going to get the kind of LP or other income from an L2 mission in L4 clothes like Massive Attack that you are going to get for AE/Bonus. So if the agent's mission portfolio is weighted towards the crappy missions, you're results will be equally crappy on average.
I was getting Massive Attack and Wildcat Strike at least once in every 16 missions for the 0.5 agent. The worst mission I got in the 50 samples from the 0.8 agent was Right Hand of Zazzmatazz and it only came up once. But I got Mordus Headhunters and Guristas Extravaganza at least once in every 16.

Don't "load of crap" me, mister! Sec status has no direct effect on effective quality, but it does have a direct effect on mission rewards. 0.1 change in a system sec status is about the same as a change of 5-8 effective quality of the agent. So if you take a 0.8 agent with 30 effective quality, it will be worse than a 0.5 agent with 20 effective quality.
