Whilst hanging about on a low sec gate today, I watched a myrmidon engage a thorax which had just jumped in. The myrmidon got an agression warning and gate gun aggro (also failed to kill the thorax incidentally). Could I have engaged the myrmidon pilot without fear of gate gun aggro? Would I have received an aggro timer which would have prevented me from jumping had the engagement gone south?

When the ship that you want dead appears on your overview flashing red, you can aggress without fear of the gate guns. There's a 30 second timer of aggression when you try to jump out.

Yes you could have engaged, you would not get gate gun aggro as he is atm flagged as a criminal (15 min timer). Upon agressing you would receive a 60 second timer restricting you from using a jump gate or docking. I'm pretty sure you also get a 15 minute agression timer started between you and that pilot I may be making that up though. Also if he doesn't shoot back and you kill him you get slapped on his kill rights list (though i may be confusing the mechanics of killrights)

Afaik, you only get killrights for "illegal" kills. Since the Myrm in this example made himself a legal target by getting a GCC any attack on him is a lawful kill and thus won't give him any right to get back at anyone.
In regards to the OP: technically, there is nothing special about low sec when it comes to engagement rules. The only difference is that CONCORD won't appear and forcibly destroy anyone who brings down a GCC on him/herself. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Yeah I never paid to much attention to killrights untill I fixed my sec and took a look at my 'can be killed by' list and started wetting myself when i jumped in to highsec for a few months.

Aggro mechanics made easy:
If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's blue, it's for you. Little star is for war. Flashing red, make it dead.

War targets are flashy red.
