I understand that pulse lasers can push out the damage, and can have a bit of a range boost with Scorch crystals... but on a battleship, it just takes so dog gone long to get into range! If I switch to beam lasers for the increased range, will I be seriously gimping myself?

What for?
I use both beam and pulse in PvP and PvE depending what I'm doing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- you seem determined to turn it into ******* Hollyoaks for neckbeards. |

a well fitted ship with scorch has some very nice range and dps...
im just playing with dodgy past's zealot fitting myself and its dps is godly.. a bs with scorch and a good fitting can reach 100km no porblem
beams are more refined Proving natural selection and Charles Darwin wrong since 1981.

Go apoc, use Pulse with Scorch.

Oh, sorry about that. This is primarily for mission running (PvE).

Certainly applies here.
Beam Lasers are harder to fit (on the Apoc for instance you will need a grid mod or rig to fit a full rack of Mega Beam Laser IIs and that's not even thinking about Tachyon Beam Lasers, and while this gives DPS quite close to a Pulse setup at superior range, what you really lose is tracking. Pulse lasers (except when using scorch) can track extremely well.
Just fit an afterburner on your ship if you're using pulse lasers to get into range faster.

..and scream at the screen when the Guristas and Angels just lol at your pure EM damage. For PvE I prefer Beam Lasers, if only for the high thermal damage component to which Guristas are weak. My Megabeam Abaddon can even to AE4 within a reasonable time frame. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

Sometime you will be better off with Beams (especially Tachs), sometimes Pulse will work better for you. You don't have to use the same fit, or even the same ship all the time.

It obviously depends on your mission composition, if you're usually up against Sansha and Blood Raiders (like I am), then pulse lasers work rather well, if you have Guristas showing up on a regular basis, it may pay to have a secondary ship available to run those missions, because even with the increased thermal output of beams Guristas are going to be a pain in the rear.

This argument seems to rage on every time.
For L4 missions I personally prefer the Abaddon with Beams for everything except angels and damsels distress when I do fit pulses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- you seem determined to turn it into ******* Hollyoaks for neckbeards. |

I concur with everyone else. For me, I love Beams over Pulses just for preference sake. But the reality is I fight more with Pulses if I know I'll be fighting under 40km. And on missions where I know I'll be bum rushed and fighting a lot under 20KM then Pulses are a must. I can hit cruisers at 8km with Pulses, while I can't hit one all that well at 2okm for beams.
So of course, if I know I'm fighting a lot at over 50KM then I'll switch to Beams.
in the 30km to 50KM range, both work very well.
90% of my missions seem to fight under the 50km ceiling so thats why you'll see most recommend Pulses with Scorsch.
