First off, I am a very new Minmatar player who has recently fell in love with the Thrasher. I believe it is a great ship from the aesthetics to the mechanics yet I had to stop and wonder about the larger Minmatar ships...
I was not impressed at all by any of the larger Minmatar ships which came as a surprise.
Is it possible (and reasonable) to stick with my Thrasher and just train skills to compliment it?

If you want to murder frigates, it's difficult to find something that will perform better than a destroyer. However, if you want to move up a target class and attack cruisers, you will find yourself dead very quickly. Destroyers don't have a ton of EHP and they have a fairly large signature radius, making them easy prey for anything larger. The only reason they are competent frigate murderers is because of their excellent tracking and range bonuses (and fairly high DPS).
If you want to stick it out with Destroyers, no reason not to do so. They're fun, and in a gang you can be a great asset. There's no real specialized training for them either, other than the Destroyer skill. Everything else translates to frigates (small guns and missiles) or every other ship you fly (tanking, cap skills, etc).
Destroyers are also excellent early and cheap platforms for ripping through L1 missions.

Destroyers will go down very fast to drones with their sig radius not too great EHP. However from my experience, contrary to what Andrea Griffin said, it is possible to get under the tracking of some medium guns. I once took my thrasher against a corp mates thorax and if it wasnt for the Hammerhead II's, I would have been able to win that fight. However take what I said with a grain of salt, I havent tested my thrasher against any other cruisers since then and maybe I stayed out of range of the blasters when I fought him, I really cant remember the details right now lol ------------------------- Rawr! |

Thrasher -> Cyclone -> Sleipnir.
Pretty damn close to being the same ship model.

You can do a lot in the Thrasher and you wouldn't be wasting any skills on it for sure, destroyers V is a very nice since it's one of the skill required for the T2 version the sabre... which is also evil + has bubbles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- you seem determined to turn it into ******* Hollyoaks for neckbeards. |

lolwut. Learn to pop the drones seeing as how you can track and 1 volley them unless the ship has bonuses for them . Its not that hard to deal with larger ships if you know their strengths and weaknesses.

This. I would engage any cruiser that is likely to be blaster fit in a Thrasher, as I know I can orbit outside of web/scram range, pop drones, and then chip away at the cruiser until either it becomes clear that it has an active tank, or I can call in my wingmates.

Which is exactly why you should have primaried his drones.
OP: It is definatelly possible to stick with one or a few ships to fly. Most experienced pvpers will actually tell you that they prefer smaller scale and/or smaller ship combat.
When I started out I really REALLY loved the Wolf (minmatar AF) and everything about it so I trained Assault Frigates to lvl5 and I can honestly say that is one of the best decisions I've ever made.
I am not some bigass leet pvper with thousands of kills to his name, but I am proud of having killed over 125 people with a wolf and the wolf being the ship I have the most kills with (by far).
Sticking to only one (small) shiptype however does bring some extra rules with it like knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your ship compared to others but I recon all that just makes it more fun and exciting!

I love the thrasher as well. Try a medium shield extender setup with shield extender rigs- you can get a great buffer and about 12k EHP with good skills. T2 guns are a must for taking anything larger than another destroyer. -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

Thank you for the great responses everyone.
Sadly it seems I may have to leave my Thrasher behind... Once I get all my learning skills to level 5.
