Gawd, you're still going on about that?, how long ago was it again?.
I suppose when you're nation really doesn't get up to much worth mentioning, you have to bring up the past.

500 years ago, England was about to enter one of the most interesting, culturally rich eras of history, the Tudor dynasty.
Think of the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Bosworth fields, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, The Great Reformation, Sir Walter Rayleigh, The Spanish Armada, Shakespeare etc. World shaping events and facinating people.
500 years ago, your country didn't exist.
This is, however, a moot point.

Edited by: Herzog Wolfhammer on 04/07/2010 17:07:06 Happy Secession Day!
(Hey, even American statists hate it when you call July 4 Secession Day. We also call it "Overthrow your Government Day". The kinds of morons who actually think that sending a kid to the middle east to get his arms blown off "makes us free" can handle that the least).
Quoteable
Quote: Perhaps the best evidence of how American history was rewritten, Soviet style, in the post-1865 era is the fact that most Americans seem to be unaware that "Independence Day" was originally intended to be a celebration of the colonistsÆ secession from the British empire. Indeed, the word secession is not even a part of the vocabulary of most Americans, who more often than not confuse it with "succession." The Revolutionary War was AmericaÆs first war of secession. AmericaÆs most prominent secessionist, Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration, was very clear about what he was saying: Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and whenever that consent is withdrawn, it is the right of the people to "alter or abolish" that government and "to institute a new government." The word "secession" was not a part of the American language at that time, so Jefferson used the word "separation" instead to describe the intentions of the American colonial secessionists.
Unfortunately, most Americans will mouth-breath their way over to some fireworks display to "ooooooh" and "ahhhhhh"[1] and think this day is all about stuffing GMO/high fructose food into their big fat ignorant skull holes.
[1] In "Land of the Dead", by George Romero, that last installment and sequel to "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead", you can see the social commentary in the scene where the survivors were using fireworks to distract the zombies during scavenging operations. THAT is the USA. And our own government is concocting some real fireworks to distract the zombies soon.

Meh, it was bound to happen sooner or later.
The rest of the world was quite lacking in respect to the US's power, technology, quality of life, etc. up until about 20 years go. We've been the badasses on the block for over 200 years, rubbing it in everyone's faces every chance we got, sometimes doing things just to show the world we could and to watch the f*ck out. Now that Americans have been sitting on their asses for the past 20 years, sucking up Big Gulps, fast food, and reality television, all of which is specifically targeted at the lowest common denominator, knowing said person will spawn other low common denominators and forever fill the pockets of the wealthy tycoons, I'd say we deserve our comeuppance.
Does that mean we're a less powerful nation? No...if anything, we're more powerful than we've ever been. We've just got egg on our faces, and it's about time we showed some embarrassment and humility for a change.
Of course, the conversation will eventually turn to WW2 and the English will start bleating about how we didn't really do anything in WW2, just jumped on the bandwagon for a free ride. That's ok. They had their hands full for a few years and were pummeled relentlessly by ******, which probably enabled them to forget that the US fought WW2 on two fronts in two different hemispheres, and the European campaign was the easier one. I guess Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Japan itself doesn't count since we single-handedly won that theater while England was surrendering in Hong Kong. Just sayin' because it's got to be said.
In any case, the past doesn't matter anymore and the future looks pretty grim for the US. People are getting dumber and are reproducing at an alarming rate, which will only spawn dumb children, who in turn will eventually outnumber the intelligent people left. The US will continue to step on its own d*ck internationally and will continue to throw its weight around politically and economically, and more people will hate us because we're big, bad, and easy to hate. It's the price you pay for being the sole world superpower.
Personally, I'd love the US to give the finger to everyone and go back into isolation, only keeping trade up. As for military operations, complete annihilation of opposing forces is the name of the game. If allies don't like it, don't ask for help. The US also needs to be more forthcoming...the US is going to protect its international interests because they impact the US. It has nothing to do with being fair or right; it's economics, and the sooner people realize that, the better. That doesn't mean we agree with it, but that's just how it is. The US isn't some giant corporation (or is it?), it's a sovereign country and it will do what it deems fit in order to protect its own interests abroad. To even suggest that any other country in the world wouldn't do the same is laughable.
So there you have it. In a nutshell, we deserve every bit of ridicule we get; we've earned it. Now that we've dug ourselves in a hole, we need to fix it. Therefore, let Europe deal with Africa, Iran, the Balkans, etc...we've ****ed it up enough. Let's fix our education and health care system first, then we'll worry about everyone else. Anyone who attacks us gets an automatic nuke, end of story. Israel can f*ck off too.

That's basically what I'm saying. Just give the finger to everyone and let them rot. Europe will be able to fend for itself, it's not post-WW2 anymore. The Middle East should just be a big parking lot with oil wells and museums anyway.
Oh, and enough with the EU vs. US comments, people...they're completely moot. Combining 28 sovereign countries and comparing them as a whole to a single country is total bull****.

How so, USA is a centralised federation of 50 states plus territories, the EU is an emerging decentralsied confederation of 27 states plus territories.
Both have their own currencies, though required by law to eventualy get the euro this is a project in progress. In many cases the EU is an emerging superpower, and given the EU has a larger economic base than the USA it is worthwhile debating the potential ramifications of this is it not? Apples and oranges, my friend. For all Europeans here, I'm going to explain something to you. The states in the US are almost exactly like the regions in European countries, just bigger. That's it. For example, Friuli, Sardinia, and Sicily are all autonomous regions in Italy; they can make their own laws as long as they are in accordance with federal statutes, and they have more control over dissemination of funds. Now, make those regions as big as the state of Florida, and you have a US state. That's it.
Every region has a capitol, just like every state has a capitol. In that capitol sits a governor who presides over the laws of that region, just like in the US a governor presides over the laws of his or her state. Again, it's the same thing, just on a much bigger scale.
