The deployment of EVE Online: Tyrannis 1.0.2 has been extended until 14:30 UTC, this is due to our lunch taking longer than expected cos someone ordered too many pies....
We apologize for any inconvenience and will get back to trying to making eve work as soon as we've eaten said pies....

Let's make it a joke that everyone laughs about, and lacking the ability to deliver on time won't be noticed by anyone.
Can you start being more generous with your time estimates, please? Keeping time might be totally unimportant where you guys come from, but generally in business it's not (double negation, yay).

The real reason for the DT been extended by 1 hour is because CCP got that much fun out of reading the threads the last time, they decided to do it again as they are suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

CCP does not know Murphy's law.
CCP should estimate the duration of the downtime, then multiply if for 3 times and then make this number public. Then many people would be surprised and happy if the server comes online before than expected.

No-one is saying that patching the game is easy. What we ARE saying is that CCP havent got a clue as to how to work out deadlines.
To mess it up so soon after the last one isnt because of problems, its sheer incompetence.

Someday ccp will wise up , and say this patch will take 2 days, in the knowledge that they plan to get it done in 2 hours, then the forums will (should) be full of praise that the patch was sorted quicker then promised. Though i suspect that the majority of posters will still be complaigning about it.

Actually he always told the captain that he needs XX amount of time, where the XX = "required time" times two.

It may in fact be a rule of nature.. Published Estimate + n i believe it is more like Published Estimate + n*(x^a) where "a" is the amount of hours the original estimate measured in hours. "n" is the amount of pies ccp has had delivered and "x" is the amount of hamsters currently running on the wheels..
Due to my explicit in sight i happen to know this is 3 hamsters Pie situation is a difficult one - i predict 41
so this time we get 2+ + 41*(3^2+)
i would calculate it but i misplaced my calculator..

It would be nice to get an accurate timeframe, one that people can base their day around, if anything there a little too optimistic about the patching and DT's.
Thing is if they announce saying "We are expecting a 8 hour DT to patch" people would have something to say about that duration. Same if they don't live up to their stated downtimes
People are just never happy lol

This lack of time estimation skill is getting somewhat silly.
But, if they did overestimate, just added 12 hour on or whatever, I still imagine people would whine that they missed out on 'extra time' the other people who were refreshing the server status got, since they assumed they should come back at the time stated.
Though I think overall volume of whine would be less if it was overestimation instead of underestimation.
I think I know which I would prefer. And isn't overestimating and finishing under schedule better for public image overall really? |

13:30, 14:30, next will be 16:00 then 18:30 final ... i guess it sounds familiar :)
Lets talk about 2 nice examples: 1. Fire the management there, they inform us about downtimes and have no idea how long it will need to work again, and let right directly developers inform us how much time they need to finish it up 2. Better tell the DT will be extended to 18:30, finish ur work sooner and claim the "flawless victory" as get all the "blaim" here arround

Is becoming more incompetent than past events possible?
Answer : Yes
1: We get palmed of with what 25k SP for loss of over 1 day of gaming 2: When you decide to introduce this SP bonus, you decide to take even more time out of our gaming day.
I cannot believe the fact that every thinks oh great we are getting extra SP, but really this is the worst possible "gift" as its hardly anything,
What about the thousands of people that lost a days gaming, who dont care about extra SP and would just want their day back?
This is a sneaky way for CCP to save thousands upon thousands in RL Cash.
People need to wake up an smell the fresh air because we are being fed S***.

I wonder how effective CCP would be at meeting deadlines if the several thousand customers started applying item #14 of the EULA...
"In the event of a material breach of CCP's obligations to provide access to and use of your Account, the System, Game, Game Content or User Content, your sole and exclusive remedy shall be a refund of any pre-paid subscription fees attributable to the period during which you were denied such access and use, or an amount equal to the value of three (3) months' subscription fees, whichever is less."
It might be a bit of an incentive to finish as promised if it started costing them money every time they missed a deadline...

So now 60mins-20mins=40mins x 7d=280mins which means we basically have no rights to cry and complain about ccp being 1 or 2 or even 4h late cos of patching. They give us extra time everyday at least 30mins due to shorter dt's but i never saw post saying ''thx ccp for quick dt, nice job'' everyone only fking post **** when something goes wrong. Edited by: Panhead4411 on 29/06/2010 14:08:24 ^ excellent point, if one consistently misses deadlines by more than double the time, in any other job they would not continue to get paid for such incompetence. Why is CCP different? Someone on staff should get the shaft atleast, or the threat of it might make them try alittle harder to actually meet deadlines.
As someone who makes my own work schedule right now, when i plan on logging on to do some important in-game stuff in the morning (i'm -4GMT), then they can't get their junk together and kill the server for the next 6 hours but only change the new estimates by 1 hour at a time, i lose out on real monies and end up working outside in the hottest part of the day.
Atleast tell me it will take 6 hours to start, then i can go work while they are fumbling around, and come back before the server is ACTUALLY up...
All the while, those stumbling idiots get paid overtime to work in an air conditioned building b/c someone doesn't have the junk together like they should.

Do you really want people to be fired for this? Lose their jobs, default on their mortgage? Abandoned by their wife and children? Finally ending up on the streets, desperate, hungry and alone? Just because you couldn't play with your spaceship?
If i tell u as a customer i bring ur "pizza" at 14:30 and i bring it 18:30 u will pay me full price? Probably not so u can catch the point now and my answer is "YES"

I agree, of course, that there's something wrong with their downtime estimating method; sadly working on computer systems of this size, the Law of Unintended Consequences (TM) can kick in pretty hard, particularly when testing on a TQ-scale is borderline impossible.
I'd rather lose two more hours than I had planned, if it means they have no referential integrity problems, since fixing those would require a lot more than a 4-hour DT.

Actually, there was a time when FIFA were considering scrapping penalties to decide a match. Instead, having the goalposts gradually move toward each other, thus making it harder to score.

In spite of what CCP would like everyone to believe, it's not really a "gift". It's their way of trying to avoid everyone from evoking their rights under item #14 of the EULA and asking for 30+ hours added to their account or refunded. Account time costs them money, SP are free...

CCP initially gave a time when it should be completed by, this gave the players a certain expectation. When that expectation is not realised and considering the previous patch delays, they have every right to complain.

Edited by: Ushtok on 29/06/2010 15:00:39 I work in IT, and have for almost 20 years. I understand things go wrong, and working with a multitude of vendors just complicates things.
However, we always add what I call "Oh Sh!t" time to downtime estimates. Usually about 20 - 30%, sometimes even 50% depending on the scope, because things do happen, and we want people to be informed of what to do with their time. If they are expecting systems to be up/down at a certain times, they plan their time accordingly. Very rarely do we have to be down longer than what we claim, and most often we come in at our original estimate and people can get on earlier than expected. This makes people happy. We don't do it to look good, we just want our employees/customers to be making good use of their time.
So I ask that CCP do the same. It doesn't hurt to add time to an estimate, at least people are planning ops. I've actually took mental days off from work to play EVE, only to find an update taking way longer than stated.
Now, on the flip side, these EVE updates usually take longer than what is noted, so after 7 years of playing EVE, I make sure I have a long skill training, and I don't make any plans to play eve to well after the announced time after my previous experiences.

Seriously, this. I'm not mad at CCP for missing yet another deadline, I've worked in IT, I know how it can be, the unexpected always happens. However, they should also know this and plan the deadline for it!
Start telling people "Oh, there's some... stuff happening in this patch, it'll take at least a day!". Patch the server in 2 hours, fix the unexpected bug in another hour, and use the other 21 hours for bug testing OR playing beer pong on the new server cabinets, your choice :)
Yes it would make downtimes longer, but hey, then you wouldn't have people *****ing about "OMGWTF MISSED DEADLINE AGAIN!" etc.

Databases and Computer Systems/Networks and clusters can be temperamental. - I understand CCP's approach and im sure they are doing the best they can. I doubt they want to upset players who are paying their wages. And about the SP..
I feel CCP is doing the right thing with the SP reward. Many players may disagree! Although, EVERYONE gets the SP and "as a whole" it is balanced. - CCP is just stating "here we recognize our mistake" and we want to give our EVE members a bit of assistance and apologize for maybe some issues that didn't go over well.
Anyways, thus far nice job CCP - I cant imagine the Cluster/Networking and database issues but sounds to me like you are doing ok.

You know, we have this argument every patch. CCP is not stupid. They know just as well as we do that whatever time the servers are scheduled to come back is going to be off by 2-24 hours. We all know that in IT, unexpected things happen occasionally, like last week. Even my generous +6hrs that I add to every patch schedule in my head didn't come close to covering that one, and I believe there were real problems that they didn't expect that needed to be fixed. (Of course, we never got the dev blog about it that we were promised, so who knows)
My point is, this dt extension issue is normally not an IT issue. it's a marketing issue. Their marketing department has told them that they are better off giving a early estimate of return, and extending it 1-2 hours at a time. If you think about it, it has a few advantages from a business standpoint.
1) With shorter announced dts, there are less people complaining in the weeks leading up to the DT 2) By extending the deadline 1-2 hours at a time, it forces people to visit their website constantly to get the new restoration time, increasing hits and traffic. 3) by intentionally making the restore times on the early side, there is no pressure to meet them, which takes the pressure off the it team, and effectivly allows them to take all the time they need to do their work properly, rather than sacrificing quality for speed on patches. 4) Believe it or not, bringing the servers back early would lead to a number of complaints too. ("The servers were supposed to be back up at xx:xx, and I logged in at that time to find my POS RFed already by people who had been logged in for 2 hrs already)
While I personally would rather have the DT end earlier than scheduled, (or even on time, just once!!), and I suspect the actual community liasons like CCP_Navigator would too, from a company perspective , I see why they run things the way they do. Let CCP do their Work & let them test things out.
If they dont get it right we are all going to winge that TQ has fallen over or something else has gone wrong with TQ.
Time should not matter we all are going to get something from CCP some skill points and a new ship.
We should be all happy with that and in the near future CCP might give us more gifts.

Hi, CCP Navigator, Sturm here.
I've got a few suggestions that CCP could adopt to improve their downtime communications due to plumbing works, including replacing the kitchen sink. These suggestions are :
a) Blanket default ALL downtime to 1hr in length. For example, "Deployment will start at 11:00 UTC and is expected to be completed at 12:00 UTC". It would be easier since you don't have to re-type it all the time.
b) Append acronyms to the downtime message to denote downtime status. We want it to be as complicated as possible as we know anything can happen, and as such, the acronym list should be made accessible on the EveWiki. For example, "Deployment will start at 11:00 UTC and is expected to be completed at 12:00 UTC - OHMYGOD"
Acronyms list :
OHMYGOD - There were some unforeseen problems encountered, created by an unforeseened error, caused by an unforeseened CCP employee. All in all, everything was unforseened. The estimated uptime is unforseened.
OHCRAP - CCP Tuxford pushed another button causing unexpected issues. Estimated uptime, as soon as we find where Tuxford is hiding.
PWNED - Ok, who f****d up? Oops .. estimated uptime, err ... we'll get back to you on this.
These sample acronym list are non-expansive curently, but as time goes along I'm sure we can come up with more. I hope these suggestion will be seriosly considered in the interest of the greater EVE community.
Ciao!

I am a little surprised they don't give a liberal estimate, and then preface this announcement with a disclaimer saying that downtime may take up to 24 - 48 hours longer than expected, yada yada yada.

I think a lot of us accept that estimates are just that and overruns occur, but with CCP its more than a slight or occasional overrun - its every PATCH. Would be better for all if CCP's estimates started at their most pesimistic time rather than what they think is the minimum time needed. -- Users are like a virus - each causing a thousand tiny crises until the host finally dies. |

Hope everyone set a super long skill... again. Luckily I'm still working off the skill I set prior to the server move, should be good for another 5-6 days on both accounts.
Honestly though, the fact that I (have to) plan like this for something that should only take a couple hours is comical.

exactly what i am thinking about! everyone who seriously likes this games doesn't care about an estimated downtime till, let's say 20:00 UTC and if u can fix it to get finished earlier thats great. But setting the expected downtime too early every time and adding one hour here and half an hour there can't be conducive. No whining no flaming only a suggestion.

Someone should compile an actual graph of CCP original patch DT estimates -vs- when they actually came up, and post it on the web. Let THAT get spread around the big gaming blogs a bit and see if CCP doesn't start making realistic estimates instead of the severely overly optimistic estimates for patch DT's they currently feed us.

To put this in perspective, at least there hasn't been a rollback since the early days.
Also, at least players aren't experiencing blank screens en mass like the early days.
I remember one roll back of 3 days due to database issues, and all we got compensated was less than a million isk. Granted, everyone was still mining in bantams and ospreys and not making that much yet, but still, was a slap in the face.
Also, the stuck character issues happened to EVERYONE multiple times a month...
So in light of that, this isn't that bad. Just as I said before, CCP needs to do better at estimating downtime and even over-estimating it so players and player corps can plan.

Just say: Downtime 5 hours - even if you expect only 2 hours. And if you then need 4 hours you are still 1 hour ahead and everyone will cheer and say how awesome you are.
But if you say 2 hours downtime and then it turns out to be 4 hours, then people will yell and boooo and you just leave a bad impression.
Same amount of time passed. Totally different impression. What is the better strategy I wonder...
this is why people get angry, its not cuz the server is down, its because its down and shoulda been up two hours ago according to CCP's original plan, just about every patch goes this way, they really should catch up with the trend and just tell us itll take 3 times as long as they really think it will, this way if they bring it up early its better for us

Just save yourself some money, stop updating the game and screwing up MORE crap, dominion = fed servers, traynais = waste of DT (yep PI just, so amazing... you managed to make mining MORE boring) Whatever the last patch was... 1D of DT the DT was so long I donÆt remember what TQ was like before it. This update to give us another fail ship (yay more skills NOT to make people train) + sp for the last f-up is AGAIN f-ed up. The idea of eve is great the company that stole the idea is fail. (read earth and beyond out 2002 eve out 03, CCP) Stop with these fail updates and fix the bugs you have now, I donÆt need another useless ship, it would be nice though to have servers that donÆt crash at 200 people.

Admittedly, this extended downtime is annoying. We can moan all we want, but at least they'll get it done. I'm a pretty new player, about 2 weeks old, but I've gotta hand it to CCP. They've made one of the best games on teh whole internets. Never have I seen a game with such depth and so many openings and things to do. Yes, so there are problems with the game. Those are minor in the bigger picture in all honesty. When has anything ever been perfect anyway?

not good if it's up alot earlier, those who are glued to the screen will have advantage over those who went i.e. lunch, shopping thinking they had time, and to come back finding thier stuff under attack way before time they were told it would be on.

Bad news, still 0-0... better plan for extra time and penalties (can't see either side scoring on current performance unless they make a suprise call up and get Robert Green in goal)

I do understand that things happen and delays are inevitable. I do understand that patching servers isn't easy. But, I do not think that estimating downtimes is difficult. Overestimate and avoid ****ing off people, its as simple as that. If you can't estimate downtimes and patch with any sort of reliability, how can you keep the game data safe? I wouldn't be surprised if one of these times they said patching is delayed another 4 hours, oh and your accounts have all been reset because we fail.

the part i don't get is why do we have all the delays for patches, so they can get it right supposedly, when each new patch wrecks the game even more
epic arcs are still broken CCP. Rockets are still broken CCP. but this patch makes the customs office not turn pink when you zoom out?
get it together already. stop patching bull**** no one cares about and fix the **** that there's 20 threads about instead. at least then if the DT lasts too long there is some actual benefit from it

I Agree, CCP doesnt seem to be focusing on the REAL issues in the game. They seem to be focus on how good the game and graphics looks and not the mechanics behind the pretty lookiong shiny ships, please CCP isnt the Customer Satisfaction a priority?

You would attribute random and unpredictable comsic and atmospheric interference to preventable incompetence on the part of CCP staff members?
What if a quark just happened to bounce off the silicon wafers of the blade servers at precisely 56.798 degrees at a velocity of 4,000.002587675km/s, instead of 56.799 degrees and a velocity of 4,000.002587674 km/s, causing a miniature ripple in the space time continuum which multiplied exponentially for each passing second, and resulting in one of the less fortunate hamsters being mangled to death due to a sudden minute fluctuation in the lateral G-force of his/her hamster wheel?
