A vast majority of fleets are armour based so Caldari should only be really be chosen if you have a buddy to assist should the need arise .. tremendous potential with siege torps though and the carrier is not half bad as damage soak.
Matar have the VERTICAL Naglfar that recently got boosted, so not only does it have the orientation advantage but it is also competitive! The Carrier is "meh" at best though so question is what uses you are looking for, dread heavy go either .. carrier heavy go Caldari.
My opinion DOES matter dammit!!

Amarr caps = Best caps.
Get a carrier first, you'll get more use out of it than a dread and even if you just end up using it as a hauler you're getting some use out of it at least.

Just so we know....
You do know these ships cant enter high sec? You do know it cant jump threw gates? You do know you are going to need Cyno alts because begging others is really annoying? You do know using these ships in combat requires you to be in a large corp or alliance? You do know you need a decent ammount of support ships to keep you alive in combat?
If your not in a large corp or alliance all your going to use your carrier for is hauling things from 0.0/deep low sec to high sec and back. Any thing els is suicide. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just want to know you know these things befor perchesing the ship and seeing a post later on how to fit it.

Both are ok enough, really. If you are in a cap fleet all you do is grind away following FC orders, so not much though goes into it ;).
I'd ask myself if a cap is really what you want, and what you need tho. Are you gonna be flying cap ops a lot? Are you part of an alliance that can support cap ships effectively? Are you gonna use it as an RR platform in low sec pirating? etc etc.
Generally, if you are not sue if you need a cap or what to use it for, you don't really need it. Unless you need it as a ticket to get into an alliance I guess, but i tend to stay away from such groups, as they are mostly fail :P
