Edited by: JimmyMarsh on 22/06/2010 05:54:51 Alright, I've read a LOT of threads to find out what one might use to make a decent tank, but folks always reply with multi-billion isk fittings, if all of the items are even on the market, or they reply with capital ships, or assume you have every skill at level V.
The question is this: Using a T1 sub-capital ship, and without spending more than one PLEX worth of isk (currently around 300m), what is the highest DPS tank someone can build, assuming the enemy has no neut/nos (and you're cap stable!), and assuming >10m SP. (just to eliminate those of you who just advise you to get EVERY SKILL IN EXISTANCE up to Lvl5. )
Fittings are encouraged. At the moment, I'm using a drake the standard fitting: (hi-slots are unimportant, other than a NOS to help cap.) [Med-Slots] <Invulnerability Field II> <Invulnerability Field II> <Heat Dissipation Field II> <Photon Scattering Field II> <Large Shield Extender II> <Large Shield Extender II> <Enter your lowslots> [Shield Power Relay II] [Shield Power Relay II] [Shield Power Relay II] [Shield Power Relay II] [Rig-Slots] <Medium Core Defence Field Purger I> <Medium Core Defence Field Purger I> <Medium Core Defence Field Purger I>
EFT says that without fleet members or implants, and with my current skills, it tanks 643 damage a second with a uniform damage distrubtion.

first of all cap stability = pointless, second a lot of people will have all affecting skills to lvl 5. A better suggestion for rules might be, best sub capital tanks, without fleet bonuses or implants / hardwire or remote support fro other players for under the price of a plex, that would be almost sensible to use in-game. You may want to limit overloading as well. Also counting nos towards cap stability is a big mistake
[Maelstrom, stupidity] Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II Power Diagnostic System II Damage Control II Power Diagnostic System II
X-Large Shield Booster II Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Shield Boost Amplifier II Heavy Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 800 Shield Boost Amplifier II
[empty high slot]
Large Core Defence Capacitor safeguard II Large Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer II Large Core Defence Operational Solidifier I
The thing is this fit can easily become viable for PVP with a few changes, unlike that drake.
1223 DPS tanked without overload, stable, 1748 tanked with overload for 1.5-2mins, well under the price of a plex and largely insurable, PS you could get a lot more faction mods on a drake for 300m. |

I'm sure many folks will have supporting skills up to 5, but if I wanted the same answer that every other poster has gotten, I wouldn't have given different restrictions on the answer, now would I?
Also, this isn't for PVP; it's partly for my curiosity, and partly to use as a tank for missions while my main ganks. I can run the Extravaganza missions and Recon I with that drake and my main (haven't gotten WC4 yet for some reason), but sometimes the main needs to boost the drake, which I'd like to avoid, and the main issue here is that if I don't pay attention for a couple minutes the drake runs out of cap, boom goes the drake, and my main has to scurry out of there.
it only takes a couple missions to make that ISK back, but it's still VERY annoying to lose 40m once or twice a day.
Cap stability might not be important to you, but as I said before. If I wanted the same response others have gotten, I would've given the same parameters.

Try using a drake that isn't fail-fit.
If you're using Invulnerability Field IIs to tank missions, you're doing it wrong. Fit rat-specific tanks. Also, try upgrading to something with more damage. I was tanking level 4 missions with a raven with less than 6mil SP... and 1.5mil of that was spent on fun things like Industry and Social. So you can solo level 4s with a raven at <5mil SP.
DPS is King. Dead things don't hurt your tank. I'm sure you can find a raven fit on these forums relatively easily... look for one that doesn't use Cap Control Circuit rigs. Then you'll be able to solo level 4s, and use your alt for something more useful... like running a second lvl 4 mission at the same time.

Edited by: Maihes Sehim on 22/06/2010 09:22:29 If you would standardize how you bracket (using the " < " " > " and " [ " " ] " is what I mean in your fittings) then your post would be much easier to read and more people would probably be likely to assist you.

First you should probably say if it is a pvp or pve tank as specific resists would make a big difference. Also why has no one mentioned the dominix or scorpion. The scorpion has 8 mids and you will have enough cash spare to easily put a caldari navy XL booster on it or just simply save up for a navy scorpion. The dominix will also have enough cap and slots spare to do tank really well under most circumstances. I should probably mention that the dps wont be great but I assume that isn't an issue since you didn't mention it. The actual fit itself probably will vary a lot depending on how you want to tank it but I am still pretty sure of the result.
PS. scorps are also a likely primary in pvp being an ewar boat .

1. fit scorp for max EHP (or high resists if logies are available) 2. warp 50km to gate instead of 0 like rest of gang 3. watch hostiles primary you and fly towards you 4. ??? 5. PROFIT!!! __________________________________________________
