Firing weps could still work the same, i'm just talking about steering the ships themselves - wouldn't be hard to add as a feature, you'd just toggle between mouse direction or joystick etc etc. Anyone thats played Elite or Tachyon would surely agree, plus it'd open EVE up to a wider audience!

Edited by: themule on 14/12/2004 02:51:41 It would lag the server. Rather then sending informaiton evey time you click now it would have to send a constant stream based on joystick position, plus the current engine probly doesn't support it. Meaning it would be alot of work to put in.

Being a joystick jock, Id support this as much as anyone but the problem is it doesnt go well with eve's push-button type combat. Even if you could manually fly around (which wouldnt work so well on battleships and such anyway) it wouldnt be much fun, or useful, because the guns and modules and all are still done automatically.
The best you could really hope for is an elite/wingcommander-styled direct combat system set in the eve universe. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base? |

i agree that twitch control isn't possible in EVE. it's the point and click system that allows so many people to play at one time in one world.
i would, however, like an option to lock the view to the ship's orientation, so that when the ship turns, the view turns. i've always felt like i'm piloting my ship by remote control instead of really being aboard. this would make for some fantastic video clips for player made movies and serve to provide a bit more immersion.
the view would be a right click option for your ship. you would position your camera how you want it facing in relation to your ship, and then activate it. you could still right click and drag to look around, but every time your ship turned, the view would turn with it, giving you the feeling of actually riding inside.
the only problem i see with this is that sometimes it would conflict with the game's existing viewpoint limits. you can't look straight up or straight down. there are conical areas that are off-limits to point your view in. from time to time, the ship-aligned view would conflict with this during orbiting or other maneuvers.

Yup, won't work in EVE. Try Vendetta Online if you like that--its quite a good game actually. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

yea that makes sense although i meant a kind of digital control as opposed to analogue, like Elite was. would mean less information needing to be sent, but still too much perhaps. tru, this wouldn't benefit battleships at all but would make highspeed dogfights more interesting, imagine manually evading missiles and weaving around structures from a first person perspective. shame it wouldn't work :/
i like the fixed-camera idea posted earlier.
