Noob trader here. I trade in a hub that is not Jita, but most definitely a hub, as defined by its "highway" route, being a mission hub, and avg number of jumps/hour. I've noticed that on some items, and even high dollar items that take quite a lot of $$ to place a large buy order, someone(s) have come along and put as much as 9,000 of the items on a buy order that's just $500 below the lowest selling price. on other items it's the same issue but maybe it's only a 1,000 item buy order.
these contracts of course are 2-3 months long.
is there any hope of people that essentially shuts down a trade like this to smaller people might eventually grow bored of all that $$$ tied up in his ultra-low margin buy order and maybe let some of the rest of us try trading?

Confirming that trading is all about 'giving people a chance' and 'not being competitive'
Quit crying and figure it out for yourself!

Hubs aren't defined by player activity in the system, they're defined by market activity in the system. There's a key difference.

A small tip: if you buy 1, sell 1 unit of the item you will find out who they are. You can see if it is the same person on the different items. ----------------------- Join "Signatures" channel - the chatroom for traders |

no, because there is not much ISK tied up in that order.
have a look at the "Margin Trading" skill.

Don't forget, the margin may only be $500 in that station, but the item may fetch a 10-20% margin in some other station - perhaps in a different region. Buy & Haul for profit.
Similarly, some traders try to dissuade interest in an item by killing margins and then expressly manipulate the price of the item later through sell orders (essentially driving them up artificially, with the high buy order appearing as a false floor). I'm always leery of whether one can profitably manipulate markets in Eve, but I know people certainly claim success doing it ...
To answer your question more directly: No, there is nothing you can do about it. Its competition at its most basic.
