In short, started Eve 4 months ago, started trading 3 months ago (which kind and what products I'd rather not say) and got to almost 45 billion. I do have to admit that I had lots of free time and really focused on it.
So, how are you doing?

lol well I think you're allowed to brag a little bit with 45b backing you up after 3 months :)
Not much to brag here.. started Eve 6 weeks ago, started trading 5 weeks ago and am a little over 2B atm.

Here is a plot of my trading assets, starting from an initial capital of 70 million. The pink line represents the original exponential return. The green line represents the current linear increase as reinvesting capital becomes more difficult. However, I should be able to find more market opportunities eventually.
If I keep this up for 3 months, I'll have at least 45b as well.

HAHAH I got you beat...
When I first start playing, the very first time I undocked from the n00b station, there was a can there, I opened the can, in it was a covert-ops cloaking device. I picked it up and redocked instantly not realizing it was bad to steal etc or I became a target. Back then Cover-ops devices where running about 130mil, I sold it for about 95 on a quick sell order.
So in the space of lets say 30 minutes I went from 5,000 ISK to 95,000,000 ISK using the market.
If I kept up that rate, in 3 months I would have made.. 414,960,000,000 ISK!

That's awesome.
Now I know why one of the articles I read recommended Cover-Ops II :D, when they aren't all that great for trading now.

If I only was less lazy then I am. Most profit from trade comes from my buy orders...now I mostly buy stuff for making other stuff. But just yesterday I made a buy order which is 999999% higher then regional average...so maybe I'm not a good trader.

i am an utter failure. :(
i sent a 30M gift to a trader alt and immediately purchased the trade and industrial ship skills I thought i'd need on that account. 30 days later the alt is up to 300M (wallet, buys, sells) worth --- (not including inventory that's stitting around but not yet in sell orders -- my guess is that inventory worth another 50M or so.
I've currently got 200M in buy orders, 100M in sell orders, but am only "selling" 30M a day. That doesn't seem to be the turnover I need to make the big bucks. I chose Verge Vendor and I can't sit on the screen all day long, I've already moved once from Gensis (hellooooo! anyone home?) to Verge Vendor, thinking I was upgrading my hub and potential turnover... but I'm not sure it's worth it trading in these out-of-the way locations.
I could do a lot of damage with 1B, let alone 45B.

Verge Vendor is no bad choice...
I spent some time in RvB (in Red as well as in Blue) and from personal experience I can tell you that people are willing to pay just about any markup if they have to refit directly before battle (because the FC wants a sniper fleet and you have only close-range ships in your hangar, because you want to try that cool fitting that was linked in corp 5 minutes ago, because the fleet needs more ewar, because you forgot to buy drones, because you run low on faction ammo, .....).
Just don't expect to buy anything via buy orders in Verge Vendor (maybe mission loots, implants and salvage on a small scale but not much else).
Buy ships and modules in Dodixie and ship them to Tourier/Alentene. If you see that Alentene has more orders, list your stuff in Tourier and vice versa - demand should be pretty similar on both sides.
Also check out Oursulaert and Villore (for supplying FW).
(and read up on the Margin Trading skill if you haven't done so yet)
edit: ... and once you have become rich and bored buy up the whole market in Alentene and Tourier and relist in Alenia

I've got a question for any other old hats reading this thread. "How long did you do trading before you were completely burnt out on it?" For me it was about 2 months of 1hr/day trading. Since then, I can barely motivate myself to update a few orders every week.
To the newer crop: congrats! Now buy ultra-awesome pvp characters and supercaps. Heheh.

Still updating orders few hours a day (or many hours often) after 3 months. Starting to feel a bit burned out, don't think I'm gonna make it to 100 billion anytime soon.
I also plan to start playing the damn game soon

Ya, used to think it was wiser to find a long term balance; now I recommend just going nuts for 2-3 months, making 50b, and never trading again.

Amen to that.It was fun to do for half a year but it just sucks the fun and life out of you in this game. Each their own fun thing in eve and if it's doing trade for years then good for you but i found out for myself it definatly is/was not.But it got me enough to enjoy the other aspects of eve a lot easier.

It all depends on the "The log in Vibe" :) I am here for the long run, so I make sure there is no "burn out factor" so the time From 1-5H a day, to a couple of days off etc...

I'm trading now for a steady 9 months and worked out a routine that is working with not that much effort (updating orders once or twice in the night). When you do the 0.01 isk thing you'll burn out (at least me besides a full time job etc.). Finding new niches and trading methods i still fun to me.
Now i've got loads of base capital i'm expanding into manuf. and invention. Setting goals helps also, my next goal is 50b liquid.

An exponential rise of wallet/assets could be well done with low investments by doing any inter-region trading.
I startet Salavage and Rig trading almost 2,5 years ago and made about 300mill a day in average within the good ole sinlg rig-type times. Todays income out of rig tradings is kind of peanuts now and transportation burns out over time.
So how is your experience with exponential rise of wealth in terms of station trading (buying and selling at one station without any transportation)? Is it still possible with an amount of lets say more than 100 - 200 bill?

To me burnout happened but not in the sense someone would expect. I made a pair of billions, got bored. Then I did this sick reasoning:
1) EvE and MD teached stuff (I think I am the first to have thanked MD forum 3 times already) I found of value.
2) EvE is a game. ISK is a garbage money, in the sense Euro / ISK change is terrible.
3) My RL job is shaky as hell since the 2007+ cryses.
Therefore why not applying EvE's teaching to RL and try what happens when (retail) trading over there?
Needless to say, RL trading is quite harder, plus there's the little detail that unlike EvE, once you are broken you cannot go back to mine.
Fun thing, from what I learned in RL finance, I applied some in EvE and it works. Furthermore there are many fun RL toys that I'd like to see in EvE, and not necessarily all based on poisoned securities - Auditing & consulting

Edited by: Dalden V on 02/06/2010 11:58:05 I first tested out the waters with trading in Dodixie, starting with about 100m, when I got that up to 1b I decided to create a dedicated trading char and park him Jita.
Starting: 1b NAV After 1 month: 3.5b NAV After 2 months: 13b NAV After 3 months: 28b NAV
I stopped keeping my daily spreadsheet after that, it was too much work :). I did notice that after getting my NAV over 20b that I wasn't really making any more profit per day. It would be around 300-400m per day during the week and 700m to 900m per day on the weekends depending on how much time I put it.
I decided to not put in so much effort anymore and now whenever my trader is over 20b NAV I take out the difference to 'invest' in more exciting things.
EDIT: Fixed 3 month nav value

45 bil in 3 months? Uhm...
500 mil / day?
And seeing how you probably didn't make 500 mil / day in the start, I'm guessing you now make 500-1000 mil per day atm?
There's pretty much only one way of really accomplishing that, and that's with 23/7 0.01 wars.
Personally, I've averaged about 200-300 mil per day, I think. With some occasional spikes of 500-800 mil per day.
That's with a few hours of -active- trading a couple of days (4-6) a week. I tend to wait for big margins. Otherwise I can't be arsed to trade. Yeah... I'm lazy like that.
Anyhow, Wog. You should join my corp. Sounds like our chars are about the same age, and if you've become bored of trading, like me, then I have some stuff we can get ourselves into :)

Aye. Isk per hour is the key figure imo. I made similar amounts to the OP but reckon I was playing, at least initially, about double the hours of a regular fairly hard-core player. Regardless, grats to the OP! It doesn't really matter how easily you did it, hitting that much is a pretty decent achievement.

My main is about 9 months old, and my NAV is between 25b and 30b. I've got more money than I can reasonably spend, and so I'm trading very easy/lazy things at the moment. My skills are finally catching up to my cash though, so hopefully I'll be able to start spending more....
At my height I spent 30-60 minutes a day trading, and now it's more like 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll haul stuff just to break up the monotony.
