Originally by: M'ktakh Uuuh, I just remembered how much I loved Europa 1400. It was kind of a "medieval life simulator", where you had to manage a medieval business (from churches to blacksmiths to taverns) with a dynasty spanning 200 years. Any other games like this on the market?
I know of its successor, but It was a major dissapointment
Well I don't know about the simulator aspect but Anno 1404 is a city building and resource management game set in medieval time. In my opinion it's pretty decent game.

this but it takes a while to set up.
Also you could try Dawn of War 2. I just bought it on steam cheap and playing it with great frustration.

StarCraft with Brood War expansion. People still play it on the internet. Internet gameplay is challenging, computer players are not, but, hey, it's a classic and it's fun.

As for the FPS part, something akin to Thief or Bioshock, no MW crap please.
And PC only.
Thanks!
Stragedy games? I recommend:
Company of Heroes Star Craft II (Coming soon in july 27th I think) Warhammer: Dawn of War series (Dawn of War II is ok, but I kind of hate the multiplayer aspect)
FPS wise, I recommend the following: Left 4 dead 2 (got friends) Bad Company II (got friends here too?) Mass Effect I and II (great single player, but its third person shooter game with RPG elements in) Fallout 3
There's more I could recommend. Just evemail. :) ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

This. KotOR is one of my favorite RPGs of all time.
If you haven't played Half Life 2 yet you mind as well take an entire weekend to yourself and play it all the way though. Not even kidding. It's not an RPG but is my favorite game hands down.

Might as well plug a golden oldie that is just as good now as it was when it was first released.
Master of Magic.
Get dosbox to run it and enjoy years of excellent turn based epic fantasy rpg 4x gameplay. Just make sure to apply the 1.31 patch and to set up the sound as general midi for the rather enjoyable soundtrack. I recommend an even mix of white and green magic for the new player due to the powerful terrain altering spells and units buffs. Regeneration, Iron Skin and Holy Armour are quite a nasty combo for your Heros and general melee units. Once you get comfortable with the mechanics then go for either a pure scorcery or black magic wizard as they have zomg powerful overland spells that can effect entire regions of the map or even all of the world. Zombie Mastery is one of them where after being cast any units falling in battle rise from the grave and become ghouls and zombies under your control who can then increase their ranks by killing other units. Even units of two other wizards who are fighting each other.
Can't really say enough about the near infinite replayability of the game tbqfh. It should be on everyones harddrive who loves the genre.

Master of Magic.
+1 for Master of Magic ;p But if you dont like prehistoric games - Age of Wonders (1 or 2+Shadow Magic) might do a trick - its the closest you can get to MoM in games dated above year 2000. Ofc X-COM1/2 is all time clasic and still fun game to play.
From RTS? CNC3+Kanes Wrath for multi stuff (IMO beats starcraft2 in every possible way). Lately ive been playing Age of empires 3 + asian dynasties. Kinda fun game if you find someone to play on multi.
RPG? Well RPG genre IMO is dead on PC but if you want long and kinda hardcore game try Wizardry 8. It IS good and kinda long. Or if you cant be arsed - Morrowind. Still way better than FO3+Oblivion combined.
FPS? Meh another genre that recycles ideas all the friggin time. Bad Company 2 for multiplayer. For single id go towards TPP shooters like splinter cell: conviction (i didnt finish it but game was kinda ok in my book) or maybe even deadspace (if its on PC, not sure).

They're both more or less the same in terms of gameplay. Out of the whole series, I found the Homeworld:Cataclysm expansion to be the best. From what I can remember (this was a long time ago), its Cataclysm's gameplay and UI was slightly different from the original because it came from a different software studio (Barking Dog iirc).
If you fell asleep with Homeworld 2, then its siblings won't change anything. |

Might want to check out King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame, it's an RPG/RTS. On Steam atm for 66% off. I am actually looking at buying it myself as it looks pretty decent for that price.

Men of war and its predecessor faces of war were both awful compared to the original, soldiers: heroes of ww2, they made soldiers amazingly and then messed up the interface and gameplay with its two sequels

if there's a thing that made me cringe about HW1 was how ****ing hard that game was.
I mean, I only managed to clear the game with an infinite resources trainer, and even then it was ****ing hard.
the final 3 missions are simply... staggering, dificulty-wise. there was a time where I had to replace half of my frigate fleet for support frigates, meaning that the frigate section was pretty much ion+support, because my entire fighter/bomber/corvette wing needed a means to repair and resupply. Resources were also scarce, and every bit counted before heading to the final mission (and even then, your RU's were quite limited)
HW: Cataclysm had nice things that were implemented later on in HW2, like modular design, and the introduction of a AoE weapon. unit limit was also introduced in Cataclysm and the Cataclysm mothership could actually strike back with something more than pea-shooters. That and more among many things were what made Cataclysm very good.
HW2, when it got out, had some mighty hard missions that had to be patched so that they were passable. Other than that, while very good game, it really didn't live up to its predecessors. Still, a quality game, with much more refined mechanics, with several things brought from both HW1 (ship class progression, amongst other known stuffs) and Cataclysm (modular construction).
I am eagerly awaiting for the announced HW3 ---
