I got me a nightmare recently with Imperial Navy Tachyons and 3 Imperial Navy Heatsinks.
What other faction goodies should I be looking to add to the spikey monster?

Probably some form of tank thats suits your activity within your price range. In addition you will probably need some electronic/engineering modules that also suit your budget and activity.

Ummm Get a Faction Tracking Comp, with Tracking speed script. Get Faction Tracking Enhancers, and get cheap faction stuff that you will use.

oddly enough I would be fitting caldari factional stuff in the mids, so amarr factional in highs and lows, and then caldari in the mids.

Honestly, that's about all you really need. I put a Domination Afterburner on mine, to reduce cap use when I'm moving about, but really that's just fluff. Oh and I guess a T2 CCC for that bit of extra cap is pretty nice.
Other than that, spend your ISK on hardwirings: +5% turret damage, +5% large energy turret damage, +5% tracking, +5% cap, +5% cap recharge.
Then just a normal T2 tank is easily sufficient, because stuff dies so fast. I guess you could use Dread hardeners to bring your cap use down a bit more, but meh. All you're really doing is increasing your gankability without increasing your ability to do missions.

You need good dmg anyway, so Tachyons must be IN/T2. 3-4 IN heatsinks. TE may be T2, coz Domi/RF is +0.5% tracking... this is just nothing. Tracking comp should be Shadow Serp.
Tank depends on things you are going to do. T2 will be absolutely enough for L4 missions. You need plex tank (or even passive with logistic) only if you're going to do something more complicate,d like L5's or plexes.
