Hello EVE Community.
If I understand correctly, many corp operations require Ventrillo, or a similar voice program. But, what if the player is deaf? Are deaf players destined to be left out of the loop, and out of the team? When corp chat is supplanted by voice chat, what is a deaf player to do? Go lone wolf? Just be a miner? Just run lone missions to level 3, maybe 4, only? Brave lowsec and 0.0 alone and isolated?
How many players in EVE are deaf, anyway?

Fortunately, EVE has some decent functions even if you are deaf. Voice communication software are still the best option, but there is an ingame broadcast system.
Whoever calls targets can broadcast them, and all fleetmembers would see the broadcasted target. There are also broadcasts for low armor/shields if you're in a pinch.
You could also ask corp mates to relay important info in the fleet chat.

Ventrilo has a nifty little chat channel that you can open up. As an added feature, people can enable a "synth voice" to read what people type in the chat channel.
Sadly this is a rather "one way" form of communication. Be sure to let people know what's going on so they can try to accommodate you.
Other than that... watch the chat channel very carefully, watch for broadcasts, and try to shadow people's actions/movements. _______________________

Edited by: Varraba Kaphim on 30/04/2010 08:25:28 Thus far, the corp ops I've been in have been mining ops with plenty of chat usage. I've been in one combat ops where I was accomodated. However, no one used the broadcast apps in either mining or combat. From what I've seen in chat, though, a great deal of discussion is by voice. I have told them "I don't have Vent." I've not explained why, though, yet.
Yes, I know, I should...and will.

On most of the ops I have been on if there is a deaf person in fleet people normally take it upon themselves to relay in chat what the fc wants done. You just need to let people know (if they don't already) and hope that there is someone who is fast at typing.

Most larger fleets I have been on always have a chat relay in the fleet channel so the FCs commands are displayed in a static environment where they can easily be referred to by anyone who happened to miss the ventrilo cue. Plus it helps the FC keep his chain of thought should he lose it for any reason, be it the cat, a wife, a scantily glad girlfriend, or w/e.
I actually do the chat relay fairly often when asked as I do 100WPM with 94% accuracy the last time I checked.
You would do well to find an alliance like the one I am in, that has a chat relay running in all its fleets more often than not.

Targets can't be broadcasted if they are to far away (might be a bug). You further need a log on the target to broadcast it. Whatever you do, you will be slower when it comes to focused fire.
It might be possible to relay voice commands to chat but that's neither relyable nor fast. Expect to get lost or the guy who is losing his ship when your teams has to run.
FC don't read fleet chat. If you got 3 clients open and watching IRC and ingame tactical channels on top of that, you simply have no need for another channel of communication.
So yes, technicly a deaf person could play in serious business fleets. But I never met any party that is actually doing it.

All the above I've considered. I've written my CEO (off line at the time) and await a response. I've often thought I'd be consigned to 'lone wolf' operations: no fleet, lone scout/hunter scenarios.

Would a corp advertise they have deaf or hard of hearing (HoH) players? Aside from my blatant admission, I have my doubts. Many HoH play online.

We don't have any deaf folks (that I know of) but we do have at least one individual who physically can't speak - we've mostly learned to type very very fast and use abbreviations for everything.
I will not deny that voice comms make things easier, but they aren't necessary. --Vel

Imo pvp is about the only activity that requires voice-chat and there ARE situations where voice-comms are not necessary.
1) Cloaked prober (or to a lesser degree stealth bomber) Especially the cloaked prober is very independant of the fleet, but can be crucial to the fleet ops. This means that you don't get into trouble if you missed an order. The kind of intel you relay back to the fleet is best typed in fleet-chat anyway. Stealth bombers can fly as an independant group and they stay cloaked until needed.
2) Loosely grouped pvp'er. We have that quite a lot in faction warfare (but I'm sure it's not restricted to fw). Those are pilots flying solo, but sharing intel and supporting each other when needed. They rarely form a fleet beforehand. When support of a fellow pilot is asked, there is no time to form a fleet or the fleet is just needed to provide a warp-in on a target (with all the intel having been typed out prior to the fleet forming).
3) Gatecamping pvp. I don't see why one would need voice comms for that .
Other then that you can pair up with a player who types voice orders out for you. It's slower and can lose you a ship or two, but there is no reason why you couldn't do it.

Large alliances constantly have plenty of people, who are in need of relay. Some folks are deaf, some are at work and can't use headset or their audio system just broke. Anyway, it's possible for them to play, because commands are usually relayed in fleet chat or dedicated chat channel. If it isn't so in your corp, maybe you should just look for another one.

Edited by: Joe Starbreaker on 30/04/2010 16:41:19 I don't know how you'd be accommodated, but I think it's fair to say that most EVE corporations would be happy to welcome you and try to figure out how to make it work. One of the things that makes EVE unique is that its player base is much more mature than that of other games (I'd guess average age is 25-30).
The reason fleets use voice communication is that combat happens very quickly. You might want to develop a role for your character that doesn't depend on rapid communication -- for example, you could be a logistics ("healer") pilot, whose job is merely to observe who's taking damage and repair them.
Alternatively you might ask that your fleet set up some simple rules for action ahead of time. For example, all battleships shoot enemy battleships in alphabetical order, all cruisers are on anti-e-war duty, all ECM ships jam enemy logistics first... something like that.

More now know. The situation is on it's way to a resolution. As it was when I was younger (I'm 48, now), I'm just embarrassed (ashamed?) of my hearing. It's easy to fake it IRL as I can read lips to some extent and I work alone on my job. Thanks for your advice, all of you .

Link is to a guy claiming he has started a corp/alliance for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I haven't verified this information in game as I am at work, but it might be something for you.

Good luck finding a nice corp.
