Edited by: Matterick Boon on 19/04/2010 10:57:44 Two of the planetary interaction skills you've added are using incorrect names. Exoplanetology and Advanced Exoplanetology. Exo is latin for outside, outward. Exoplanets are planets outside of our solar system. Exoplanetology is the study of those planets outside our solar system. Planetology (Planetary Science is how it's normally referred) is the study of planets. Can't really call it an exoplanet if you are in it's solar system orbiting it and have a colony on it can you?

If exoplanets are outside of our solar system, and our solar system isn't even in eve, then every planet in eve is outside our solar system. Checkmate. |

That's not how it works. I guess I should use a more "dumbed down" definition of "exoplanet". As I said Exo means outside and I assume you know what a planet means. Exoplanet = Outside Planet. It can't be outside if you are in it's vicinity.

No, the term exoplanet is an abbreviation of extrasolar planet, so your first definition was actually correct. Humans have a fairly egocentric world view and like to define things that way. So all planets outside of our own solar system are exoplanets. You can travel to them all you want, they still remain exoplanets (otherwise according to your argument Earth would suddenly be defined as an exoplanet as soon as you leave the solar system).
So the terminology used in EVE is correct (with the only little quirk being that they call all star systems solar systems, whereas if you are precise "the" sun is the star in our star system which is thus the only solar system).
But, either way, does it really matter? It's just about dots and lines on simulated "google earth" anyway...

An exoplanet is the shortened form of extrasolar planet.
And extrasolar planets (or exoplanets) are defined as planets outside of our solar system. While perhaps an egocentrical definition it does mean that every single planet in EvE cluster is an exoplanet.

Having actually studied planetology professionally (looking at impact crater scaling on all the terrestrial bodies) I'd say that the Exo prefix is redundant. I'd prefer to get rid of it.

I would agree. Either they're all exoplanets or none of them are. The word doesn't really have a meaning for a civilization that has settled thousands of star systems.

From our point of view the planets in eve are exoplanets, from the point of view of anyone in the eve universe the term is redundant. So they should call the skills planetology and advanced planetology

im surprised ccp hasnt added like 10 specialisation skills to the tree, could happen i guess, producitivity, yeild amounts, more links etc maybe Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

Edited by: Lialem on 21/04/2010 16:37:20 Exoplanet is the correct term.
From wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extrasolar_planet
"An extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is a planet outside the Solar System."
Further clicking into Solar System brings up this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_System explaining our Solar System, thats why Solar System is with capitals letters. Its a specific Solar System not every solar system out there.
So if we say that our Solar System in EVE is the solar system that those ppl in EVE came from and are trapped here OR at least say that our Solar System is New Eden system, then all the planets in EVE are exoplanets. So the term IS correct.
And besides all that.... exoplanet sounds more alien and i like it.
Btw exo- is greek prefix not latin.... comes from greek word έξω that does mean outside. http://ancienthistory.about.com/library/weekly/aa052698.htm

But who really cares......I'd much rather the devs spend time where it counts - developing a good system, rather than worrying about little terminology issues.
Eve is a different galaxy where people migrated to in the distant past......it's logical that their terminology and understanding of physics will be a llittle different to that in real life. Americans and Australians have very different views on the word pis*ed Here it means drunk, in America it means angry and we're on the same damn planet. Of course terms will mean different things across galaxies.

Erm.
The correct term would be "planetary system" or "star system." There's only one Solar system, and that's the one with Earth and the other seven planets.
It still bugs me a bit that EVE uses "Solar system" as a generic. It's like calling every computer an IBM.

Bet you still think the earth is flat... in this "alternate universe" they don't know our solar system exists. how could they know they are outside of it?

<sarcastic pedantic mode on>It's incorrect to call ships in EVE "ships", as they're actually just database entries on some computers in London. So for everything you see in EVE, "database entry" is the correct term.</sarcastic pedantic mode off>
"Exoplanet" may be correct for us sitting here at our computers on Earth. It's redundant for people in another star cluster for whom the Solar system is basically a mythical place and who live on thousands of planets in thousands of star systems. For them, according to your pedantic definition, every planet is an exoplanet, even if hundreds of generations of their ancestors lived there, thus it's pointless to call any of them exoplanets.
