Edited by: Ssakaa on 11/04/2010 11:33:04 If you're not a roleplayer, please don't read any further, it won't interest you at all.
So, for the role-playing crowd, it's easy to get into an arc for your character(s), gathering together like-minded players. We're happy. It's art, darling.
But when it comes to adding atmosphere to our events or whatnot, there's a maddening lack of options to add flavour text to them.
Example: (Avatar ->) /me meanders over to the bar and orders a glass of vodka, extending a finger towards a particular, favoured, brand on display.
(Avatar ->) *A bar-tender, looking immeasurably bored, obliges as he reaches for a clean glass.*
Etc.
Problem right there is the person who adds the flavour text has his or her character's avatar directly on display, and it just looks wrong.
CCP -can't anything be done to help still our beating hearts? Every roleplaying stroke is eh... torn from our bodies... and we're hurting inside because you don't allow us to add flavour text without our character's stupid mugshot getting in the way.
Yes, it's potentially open to abuse to omit ownership of the text, but -you're programming geniuses, c'mon.
<- Oppressed roleplayer face.
Edited to add: Wrong forum section probably. It's the pain, you see.

Edited by: knifee on 11/04/2010 11:58:13 Are you talking about removing the little avatar pictures on the left of the chat window (in the text, not the list of people in the chan)?
If you are there is an option to do that already. Its at the top of the chat. chans. to the right of the size options.
(Edit, sry forgot LOL RP.)

That's brilliant.
It's a kludge, but it works.
Knifee. Mere words cannot describe how much respect <-- whiney roleplaying face feels for every teacher you had, every book you read or every person who made your life better in some way, including your immediate and distant ancestors, whom deserve the highest accolade of all.
That, and your wallet is about to get fatter.
Emo edit: ... except your avatar's damn name is still present. Problem not solved. Now that we're dating one another, can you think of some way around this, please?

If you implement a way to output text without the name of the author being visible it will be misused. ISK sellers would be able to spam anonymously for example.

Well, you're perfectly right in mentioning it. Abuse is fairly unlikely in a private chan expressly set up for private events with known participants -but in implementing a workaround, the results may potentially lead to that which you suggest, on a larger scale.
Improvisation, then. Thanks for replies, both.

You could abuse return characters. By that, I mean holding shift when you hit enter to go to a new line without sending in whatever you typed already.
It would require you to do your own flavour text(s) at the same time as you speak/do something, but better than nothing. _____

That's inventive, SupaKudoRio. Thanks.
Ideally, after a think about this, the mods of a private channel for your event could have permission set to add text without their name appearing before the flavour text -a traditional GM role, if you like.
The remaining good MUDS have simple ways to do this, and have always, but then again, they aren't prone to currency spammers and the like. As for Incarna, one would hope CCP offers us more than /em. We'll see.

Well, just my little tuppence worth.
I don't see having the persons portrait who added the flavour text as a problem at all.
Purely IC RP only works when everyone is agreeing to do it, so everyone is already there to 'play along' as such, the important thing is to be able to be creative and enjoy yourself. Having to have a name before adding narrative was a pain because it limited what you could type... but the portrait doesn't really have any such hold over your creativity.
Besides, I kind of like knowing who is being flamboyant and creative with their RP (and conversely who is being cheesy and stilted :D ) Dae.
