Because this game would be stupid if you could do that. When you make a video game you have to balance realism WITH playability.

Like the stars that used to twinkle? Or momentum allowing a Frigate to bump a Titan? Or nebulae (which would not be seen anyway) in every star system?
The answer is little care was put into real science but the back stories cover that up so it doesn't really matter. Sound in space and warping through planets are easy to explain. A lot of bad science is promoted through films, books and games though.

Yes relativistic effects(described by einstein) cause time dilation. Hypothetical scenario: You travel at a speed that is so close to the speed of light the difference between your speed and C is negligible. You travel...20 light years to a star, you would reach the the star in possibly a few minutes by the clock on your ship, but to an outside observer you will have taken 20 years.
Also of note is your mass increases at an exponential rate the closer you get to C, with anything travelling at C having an infinite mass, which is impossible as that would dictate having infinite energy, as mass and energy are interchangeable.

Which is actually just a limit of Einstein's equation, which is inaccurate in some way (as photons travel at the speed of light, but have a limited amount of energy, and to say they are massless is not entirely accurate. There are a few contradictions in the laws, so we don't entirely understand relativistic speeds and the speed of light.)

EVE was never designed to be a space simulator and its roots have nothing to do with Frontier or even Elite.
EVE is almost entirely based off of an old text based game from the 80's called Tradewars 2002. It is much more of an empire building and economic simulator than anything else and it just happens to take place in space.

You see this in everyday life through refraction, when light slow's down(and changes direction) when going into another medium. C is only applicable in a vacuum.

Light does not really slow down, it just gets absorbed by the material and spat out again, which takes up a moment and thus in relation to unhindered traveling slows the light down. --------

Photons travel at [only!] speed of light and their energy (mass) is just a wavelength and nothing more.

Because even in space, there's resistance, but you only see it when your in the Km/s area
Hence why "Deflector Dish's" are used in Star Trek to get to light speed.
Its a common missconseption, space isn't free of stuff, theres always a partical or two per meter square

The maximum speed any space craft can reach is limited by the exhaust velocity of its engines. Once you hit that velocity going faster is impossible.

there were many video interviews available around the time of EVE's release in 2003, the devs talked about playing Elite and the influence it had on their vision of EVE. For whatever reasons they realised that twitch-based combat and realistic physics just wouldn't work for an MMO on this scale, and many features they had originally wanted (landing on planets) didn't make it in. EVE has evolved a lot since then, but it's taken a whole different direction to the original concept

What a nonsense. The exhaust gives you acceleration, so you can accelerate until you run out of fuel (and then reach maximum velocity)

I know this to be true, but have trouble understanding why. As speed is relative, how can any speed influence the exhaust/acceleration dynamics? Maybe you can explain if you know :)

Since when, according to the Theory Of Relativity, does slowly accelerating in space get you to the Speed Of Light eventually (if not artifically increased or affected by external factors such as gravity "slingshots" or things like that) ?

EVE Online IS, almost 100% Tradewars 2002. In fact, it's so much like Tradewars 2002, that you can play them game with zero graphics. If they took out all of the rendered graphics in the game, you and I could still do every single thing from markets to PVP with nothing but the information on the excel-like overviews. It would be pretty boring, but essentially it's a text based game with some pretty graphics thrown in for the "ooooh, shiny!" factor.
Maybe there were some kind of legal issues they could get into back in '02 by mentioning Tradewars and therefore that's why it isn't stated openly, but damn it's such a direct copy that I did a double take the first time I logged in. I called my friends and said "Hey guys, guess what, they made a Tradewars 2002 with graphics, come try it out with me!"... and here we are. :)
