But, what if we had a bomb that would increase the signature radius of all ships inside the explosion radius. From an RP point of view, it explodes (just a trigger-explosion, no real damage potential), distributing radioactive particles that are, through the mass fields of such heavy bodies as spaceships, and the residue ionisation of the hull, attrackted towards the ships and attach themselves to the hulls.
The signature radius increase would then diminish over time, as those particles, once exposed to space, have a short half-life time. ;)
It seems to be an idea that shouldn't be too overpowered, but offers an advantage if, for example, such a marking-bomb was dropped before damage dealing bombs. Of course the bombs would need to be either stacking nerfed, or there can only be 1 effect at the time active, and a new bomb would just reset the timer and reset the ships back to the starting signature increase.
Painters are nowadays barely used, mostly because of the prevalence of shield-buffer setups that limit the medium slots, and thus, Rapiers/Huginns usually fit just 2 webs and leave the painters out. Same with Hyenas.

Seems like a good idea. I personally can't see any issues as long as the effect is not stackable.

Be some overhead for FC's since picking one bomb for fleet the norm, but a good overhead. Could make bomber wings interesting anyway with picking the "painter" bomb guy and a backup or 2 and hope the stay alive. Vice 20 peeps loading corp/alliance spec bomb.

I've always thought that more and varied types of bombs would be interesting. You could have a bomb for each type of racial ewar. What you proposed is essentially a target painting bomb for minmatars, and the caldari bomb already exists(lockbreaker). Throw in a sensor damping bomb and a turret destablization bomb and now you got everyone covered. You could even take it a step further and throw webber and scrambling bombs into the mix.
Hell even some different varients of the existing bombs could be interesting. Such as bombs with a much wider range but greatly reduce damage, or the exact opposite, Shorter range and higher dmg. Varying the other attributes such as the signature radius could lead to even more possibilities, such as a large area low damage bomb with a small sig geared for use against small ships.
