Edited by: Vritri on 01/04/2010 11:34:19 Edited by: Vritri on 01/04/2010 11:30:11 I've played EVE off and on for a while, mostly focused on hisec non-violent past-times (trading, some light production etc). Never actually once been involved in a pvp conflict, never even been targetted by another player.
However, for the past maybe two months or so, I've been working on training a Rifter to get involved in maybe a little bit of FW or light pvp, as I here the game is much more interesting from that point (and I can only do so much trading without something to actually spend the money on). After maybe another two weeks (still working on getting T2 guns), I'll probably have the actual skills to start trying some pvp with the Rifter, I was just wondering if there were any good guides for it (how to find a fair conflict and not be instantly shredded before I can even learn anything).
Or is it just going to be baptism by fire, and I should be prepared to lose my first dozen rifters before I even get any shots off?
EDIT: Not worried about skill advice or fitting advice, as I have a pretty decent grasp of how to go about those, and what helps the ship the most. Nor am I in a corp, I live in Japan atm so it's harder finding corps that run in my timezone, and I've generally been pretty content doing solo-trading stuff on my own.

Use the "Warfare and Tactics" part of this forum, loads of stuff in there about starting out in PvP.
Basic guideline seems to be that you will lose loads of ships till you find your feet in PvP, so find a good cheap fit and keep your ships insured.
Oh and read some of the Dawntreader posts

You can try joining Red vs. Blue (R-v-B channel ingame). We are two corps in Gallente hisec perpetually at war with each other. It's a good place to get lots of good fights with really cheap ships. |

Start with a stack of about 25, complete with T1 fittings. Aim for a cost of 2.5 million or less (sometimes a little meta1/2 is needed to fit, and very affordable). By the time you reach the end of that, you will either: A) Never want to PvP again. B) Want to buy another 25. C) Want to move to another ship.

^^ This.
With light production skills you might have the means and the capability to build and fit your own ships. I do this all the time.
T1 BPO's are fairly cheap and don't require much (if any) research. Fit meta when you have it or can afford/find it, fit basic T1 when you can't.

Jeez people, he doesnt even have a destroyer yet. I suggest that for PvP-ing you buy and outfit a thrasher, and with all the skills, launchers, guns, and insurance, you should spend around 1.5mil for a cheap fit. Try 200mm autocannons and a malkuth. Tech 1 frigates like the rifter are fast and high damage, but die alot and a good fit rifter costs about a mil to lose There's this new thing called a stasis webifier. You should really read about it before you buy that interceptor... |

And trashers cost less and die less? I don't exactly follow your logic there. Also, why are you comparing prices between a "cheap fit" trasher and "good fit" rifter instead of having both be fit "good" or both be fit "cheap"?

Thrashers are nice ships, but since the thread was asking about Rifters, most of the responses leaned towards that.
Thrashers are going to cost more to purchase and fit than a Rifter, and they do typically die just as often (flying a ship with the tank of a frigate but with the sig radius of a cruiser makes a tempting target).
But they are fun ships.

thanks for the advice, been reading that site (Rifter Drifter) pretty heavily, which is still full of useful information even though I'm more interested in high-sec stuff. I'll probably go with the stack of relatively cheap fit Rifters before I start investing heavily in T2 modules, though I nearly have the skills to fit them.
I'll look at the Thrashers later, but I figured I'd stick to frigates for now, especially as I've heard some reports of destroyers being a bit trickier to get into pvp with, at least for your initial attempts.
