Although I'm putting off using spreadsheets as long as I possibly can (everyone says you need them at some point), I totally agree. Then again, I realize they don't want to do everything for you - it's kind of like if you put in the effort to go do all that stuff off-client, then that's an advantage you're making for yourself. |

Spreadsheets bah.
/Real/ geeks use databases. Only time your data should hit a spreadsheet is /maybe/ for visualisation of an extract. And even then, there are better reporting packages available. What the hell do people use spreadsheets for in Eve anyways? I don't get it. I always hear people call Eve spreadsheets in space, yet I've never used a spreadsheet for Eve. I do T2 manufacturer/invention, and I used to be a trader. There are programs specifically designed for anything a spreadsheet can do with much less work on the users end. What can a spreadsheet do that one of the 100s of 3rd party programs cannot? |

I would prefer if eve just allowed for simple in wallet summations or tabulations across a specified range with just a few simple options to view your transaction and market data better in game. I like my monster spreadsheet just fine and dont want to take the time to make a database or write my own program especially when I have at least 3 bookmarked that already can do that sort of thing for me for free. Why reinvent the wheel?

Real time updating for things like price of an item. That would save me so much time. Right now I have to manually look up the price for everything in my spreadsheet and update it in excel. Self-updating entries based on market data would be awesome. |

I know that my first inclination to managing various parts of eve was to open a spreadsheet rather than search online for an app. I can't say that's the common reaction to eve's various activities, but with the prevalence of tables giving Eve a spreadsheet like interface (overview, skillsheet, market, inventory, log, S&I, etc) this seems to be a natural step.
Using some of the varied applications made for eve would be more efficient than the spreadsheet I have going. However, I've managed to teach myself a lot about some more advanced topics within excel that would have been meaningless to me otherwise. So, when someone refers to Eve as "spreadsheets in space", I think of it as an endearing term. |

I don't know what the other software can do, but I've used spreadsheets to plan mining runs based on what I want to build at the time, mineral compression, and working out some other ideas that I think are far more clever than they turn out to be... mostly.
Best of all, Open Office is free and can be used for more than just Eve.

EVE has two options to (semi) automate:
1. use EVE API ( see http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/EVE_API_Functions) Advantage: Full automated extraction of any character based data. Disadvantage: No realtime data, cause you have to wait a certain timeframe to update again (1hour for orders etc.) so that's not an appropriate solution for fast traders etc.
2. Export Orders via Order tab ingame and import them via VBA in your spreadsheet Advantage: Real time data of your orders Disadvantage: Semi auttomated: You need to login and export, just orders only |

Not that that's from the /Eve/ API.
That's from eve-central. Which isn't from CCP. FuzzWork Enterprises http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/ Blueprint calculator, invention chance calculator, isk/m3 Ore chart-á and other 'useful' utilities. |
