Greetings,
What is the counter to being webbed by an NPC pirate?
This happened to me Friday night. The rat webbed me, then buzzed around my ship like a mosquito. He was too fast to hit, and of course I couldn't out-run him because I was webbed.
A corp-mate suggested I equip an ECM module. Any suggestions, or other ideas?
Thanks folks

Tell your friend to stop being stupid, use an Afterburner or Micro warp on your ship, or web the npc, so your guns can track him, light drones also come to mind.

Im partial to the 'blow him up' strategy... However this often entails blowing him up before he gets within range.
Naturally, this is no problem for me, as my abaddon frequently finishes missions with barely a scratch on the armor... but in other events, I keep a good web on me at most times (my current one is a gallente navy web, however I have used true sansha in the past)
alternatively, bring drones.

Edited by: Kijo Rikki on 22/03/2010 18:39:26 Always always always take out frigates and cruisers FIRST and from range, if possible. This should solve the problem. Barring that carry drones. Assuming you are in a battleship drones are going to be your best anti-frigate weapon at close range. ECM is generally ineffective against NPC's. > WHILE SIG<AWESOME DO LOOP there is no escape from my crappy sig. |

I can't bring drones to the fight, as I'm flying a Maller (no drone capacity)...
But I'll try the webbing idea, see how that goes. Thanks!

Try forcing the npc to be bumped by an object (nestle yourself in the asteroid belt for instance)
Can work in a few limited pvp situations as well |

Small drones are the best defence.
You don't say what you're flying tho so its hard to be 100% accurate

One more vote for Drones.
Unless you can't use them or are (for some reason) going with a hybrid PVE/PVP setup. Whatever the heck that is. |

Edited by: Tippia on 22/03/2010 20:47:14 …or, to put a slightly different spin on the answers: if you're PvE:ing in a ship that can't use drones, you probably want to consider dumping that ship for something that's more fit for the purpose (the sole possible exception being if you're in a frigate yourself, in which case your guns should have tracking enough to deal with the situation). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I remember a few years ago, I was doing missions in a harpy (level 3 Guristas Extravaganza I think it was). I had railguns and no web and this npc scambled me and started orbiting at 500m going 1km/s. I couldn't hit him and he couldn't hit me...
I had an afterburner but he was going to fast, I tried to get him stuck on a structure but it didn't work. Finally I had to ask someone in local to come and help me :) After that I always fit a web on my mission ships. ---------------------------------------- "Memories are meant to fade. Like previous comments : Get drones !
If you cannot use drones, use a different ship or a different fitting.
Whichever choice you make, you need to be able to kill orbiting frigs. -

Smartbombs as long as it won't get you concorded if you can't use drones. :P
I've noticed something very interesting lately in relation to webs and frigs in level 4s. If you use a web on an npc and stick your drones on it, your drones will actually only hit it for a short period of time, after which they will stop hitting it as frequently. I usually have to pulse my web on npc frigs in order to get my drones to do damage, or web it to let my medium drones catch up then turn off the web so the drones hit it. It's rather interesting. It seems to me that drone gun tracking actually sucks when they are able to orbit their target. I've tested this a number of times (Guristas Extravaganza, Angel Extravaganza, Worlds Collide) and every time my drones won't hit anything that I've webbed (it's hit or miss with dual webs) even if I turn a painter on as well. Once I turn off my web, my drones start hitting it again.

What's so bad about this ?
Break their lock, get out of dodge - sure it's not the best way, but it's not *stupid* either.
Anyway, if you find yourself in the situation, one potential solution is to go straight at full speed, but aim for an obstacle that your ship would bounce off, such as an asteroid. Fly in such a way that you'll go past it, but can turn as soon as possible.
In this way, it's possible to get the orbiting rat to bounce or stick. After all, you don't need much reduced speed to get a good hit or 5.
Doesn't always work, especially against those spider drones, but can't hurt to try if things are looking desperate.

The issue with NPC's, from what I have read but never tested, is that they are immune to ECM so you cant break their lock unfortunately. In other words they cheat, same as their cap size is obscenely large so you can't drain them.
It does sound like the wrong ship is being used but I remember finding target a painter and webber very useful for the elite frigates. The others my Drones dealt with. But as an earlier poster says once you go to Tech 2 Drones you wonder why you didn't do it before, it makes all the difference.

*MISINFORMATION POLICE*
It's common knowledge that NPCs can be jammed. Whatever you read.. was wrong.
They also don't have huge caps, they have small caps. However, they use zero cap for their "modules" (which are more like, innate abilities) so draining their cap doesn't stop them from killing you.
edit: and just to remind you, there is still no divider between posts and sigs.

Thanks for that info, It's why I always qualify what I say, which is what I did, until I have tested it out for myself. I am still unconvinced until I do
As to the Cap I'll find out if I ever use a NOS. This site shows the few NPC's I looked at as having standard Cap though.

I was under the impression that ECM works on NPCs to the extent that it breaks their lock, but that NPCs insta lock and the ECM module does not actually jam them for the 20 second jam period hence it doesn't really have much effect. That's just what I've read on the forums though, I'd be interested to know whether anyone knows definitively how it works.
