As all players know (or should know), it is considered bad luck to fly any ship in space without a proper name attached to it. Personally, I find the process of naming a new ship to be very enjoyable; it gives the player a more personal connection to the ship. It makes it YOUR ship.
However, as the EVE community grows, so should the pool of appropriate ship names. At this time, the character cap for names stand at 20, I think. Need I remind everyone of the sensation one feels when thinking up a fantastic name, and having it rejected because it was too long.
My idea is simply this; If EVE Online is the MMO monument to uniqueness and player driven content, should that uniqueness be cut short because a ship name is too long? I propose that CCP extend the current cap to 30 characters, allowing for a much wider range of awesome names. Such a modification couldn't be too straining and complicated to be included in the next update, and as the saying goes, every little thing counts. This could indeed be a little thing that makes a small difference to many players, including myself.
Yay? Or nay? Feedback is always valued.

I support this idea. Many times I have come up with a really good name, but its just a few characters too long. A shame really.

Thank you! I mean, as long as the names aren't vulgar or offensive, it's about naming the ship what YOU want to. EVE is YOUR universe, YOUR goals and dreams in YOUR ship. So why can't you name it what YOU want?
Like I said, It couldn't be that hard to up the cap in the next update, or even one afterwards, as long as it gets done.

Limit is there for a reason - performance. expand it twice and with every scan you use more than twice the resources. Now severs can't handle the scanning, and you want to make it even worse ;p

What I would like to see is the type of ship on the overview replaced with the name of the ship. Make it more difficult for players to know right off the bat what they are fighting and at a strategic purpose to naming your ship away from the default of the ship type.

Sorry, Val, but I don't think I understand what your saying. How does a ship name increase resources you use for scanning?

Make it twice as long and it's twice the data you need to grab from db and ferry over to your client. For every ship. And every scan.
And no, we don't need to make missioners impossible to kill in empire.

Val; sure, but I'm not talking a 40 character cap here. That could get a little ridiculous. What i suggested was 30, and compared to all the other data the client receives, ten extra characters is miniscule next to other things. It's hardly a bandwidth killer.

I don't see how a string of 30 characters would be a bandwidth hog. The shiny graphics, more than anything else, as well as projectiles and their trajectories are way more of a headache.
40 characters is fine. Moral objections to ship names is stupid. Very few people would name their ship something truly objectionable and even then: the captain drives the ship.
Next to being able to name the ship it should be possible to have that name printed on the flank of the ship. Ships have a name, it's printed on the flank. When will EVE join the 16th century [or earlier] and do what every respectable captain would do with a vessel s/he is proud to fly? It cannot possibly be too much to ask to be able to look at a ship and see its name. Immersion, was that not what it was about?
And absolutely: next to the name, a cartouche of the corp the capsuleer belongs to as well as that of their alliance.
Immersion: to be awash in the experience. To identify with the environment, to -be- the identity in the environment.
For good to survive it suffices for evil to acquire a deadly, incapacitating disease. |

I wanted to name my speedy frigate: "Don't shoot the messenger"
But ended up with: "No shoot da messengr"

/SIGN for those of you nay sayers,i don't thinkthat's how it works, i think there is an active list of all who are in system stored on your comp and it's taken from there when it needs it that way it doesn't need to ferry data from the central DB, and if it doesn't work that way, then it should i'ts more econmoical (data wise i mean) to do it all once, i learned that in programming, instead of loading the same image 200 times into memmory for a grid, just load it once and then draw it 200 times, saves time and memmory (see what i did?).

That kind of data is probably hidden to avoid hacks. CCP is smart, they'd know how to hide it; Apple did the same thing with it's Itunes. Not unheard of.
