So, I don't quite have a freighter yet but I do have an itty V. Im obviously trying to make as much profit as possible out of manufacturing, but Im unsure whether my buy orders for minerals in my base of operations will fill. It's a pretty heavily trafficked system, but I dont know about mining near there.
Do buy orders usually fill regardless? Where do you all place yours and have them filled at reasonable times?

1) It is 100% dependant on haw many you are trying to buy. When I was doing some sample manufacturing in small batches to see what I could buy and sell... Well, small orders filled overnight with little trouble. Trying to buy 100X as much didn't fill quite so fast.
2) It is 100% dependant on how much time you are willing to put in to ensuring your buy orders are the highest price. Adjust your price, and second later, someone may raise their bid. Well, if you are still there and watching, then as soon as the delay is over, you can re-outbid them.
Anything in EVE that is passive doesn't pay very well (unless it is tight supply constrained resource like high end moon goo). Trading follows the the rule. Want a large order filled, then you have to babysit it to make sure it is the top order.
3) Try it and find out for yourself.

I put a LARGE order 1 jump away from a major mining system. It took a while to fill (weeks) but I now have a nice stockpile I can refine with no reprocessing tax (I don't have standing at the stations in the major mining system), and I bought it dirt cheap.
When I want material faster, I'll place the buy order in the major mining systems, and haul it myself in my Charon freighter.
How to find a major mining system: * Get Ombey's maps and look at the number of asteroid belts. * Consider the location of trade hubs and regional gates. * Consider security level, as 0.5 systems have different ore than 1.0 (go look!) * In game look at the statistics for the average number of pilots in a system. * Look at the systems ore and mineral sell orders are in (igoring trade hubs). * Visit systems and scan for mining vessels.

Also don't forget mission hubs!
Plenty of mission runners reprocess their own low end mission loot and it's a good place to pick up the higher ends in quantity!

A more definitive means to find good places to place buy orders is to place buy orders in a bunch of systems for "system" or "station". See which ones fill first, keep them refreshed, leave the others go :)
