It has come to my attention that lately CCP has, finally, started to do something about the cesspool that is these forums. For too long posters have been free to use deregatory words and insults freely, with only a few being blocked. The two 'n' words, those descriping differently sexualized people and toilet related words are amongst a rather incomplete set of words being caught by the forum filters.
However there is a dissonance between CCP declaring (quite rightly imo) the use of the name of a certain etnicity as being a bannable offense, without putting the word on the filter list. Not everyone new that comes to this forum would be aware of the strict policies in place and in order to protect them we need that word, and any others similar to it, to be censored automatically. 84,000 AUR ($420) spent on NeX store for Troll and Profit. |

Great post but wrongly titled.
That racism on these Forums is quite 'concious' indeed. There is no 'un-' about it. |

You do know what it means when you 'assume' something, don't you ?
Racism depicted in classic fiction of it's time is a different can of worms than spewing such nonsense in a Public Forum, and the OP hints at nothing of the sort.

If we have to nitpick, then there's different things to mention on that.
First, yah, there was definately a poor view against people with certain skin colour, back then, and generally accepted, in that time.
But also, at the same time, the n-word - which ironicly now is considered 'bad' - was just used as a definition early on.
So TL;DR judging by those concepts, yes, books that depicture certain skin colours as weaker than others should probably be more prone to be banned than the n-word. Personally? I think it's ignorance that should be banned, anyone openminded know that these books are describing a society structure that is irrelevant to today. It should and could be viewed from a historic viewpoint. And anyone that is at least partially mature about it, should not be upset about the use of the n-word as anything worse than by saying the name of a colours.
People are just too damn sensitive, self-centered and take everything personal. Therapists would probably be pointing towards low self-esteem, especially in combination with ignorance and poor education. shiptoastin' liek a baws |

You can usually deal with it by not bringing it up every five minutes in threads and ignoring it. Ignoring makes it go away eventually when the troll realises he's not going to get a bite or tears. Reporting really offensive stuff would get it removed (one hopes). But on the other hand humour and banter between adults should be allowed, I would still take the p out of the welsh by calling them sheep sha**ers and the French frogs, does that make me racist ? I hope not as my dads welsh and my gf is French.
Lots of peeps seem to loose there sense of humour on here sometimes.
While certain aspects of trolling and posting sh*t need to jumped on quickly, I do not want to have a forum so locked down that it would be like have a conversation on hello kitty online.

To be perfectly honest with you, the word 'Jew' isn't offensive in and of itself, it describes an ethnic group perfectly and I believe most Jews would proudly proclaim themselves as such. The problem with the word is that many bigoted people have begun using it as though it were an insult, which puts the perception in some peoples mind that it is an offensive word, as evidenced by your post.
The similar thing has happened to the word 'gay', its meaning as of late has gradually shifted away from meaning a person who is attracted to the same sex to a someone or something or some event that is just really stupid, thanks to its frequent use by the youth of America. |

The implications of what you're saying is that every nationality, ethnicity, and religious name should also be filtered. There are correct ways of using the terms you deem need filtered, though probably not often in GD and if at all in OOPE.
Or you could recognize that this is the internet like the rest of us and realize that people will be stupid no matter what words they can and can't visually see. I mean really, filtering additional content just means people will work around it and I won't know what the hell I'm reading when they don't go to that effort. |

WTF. It is not a derogatory word any more then christian or muslim is. It's a word that indicates a person of a specific religious background.
The workd that starts with K is the derogatory way to refer to the jewish people.

How can you put that word in a filter list, what next Christian, Muslim, Hindu, then English, German, American, where would you stop, anything can be an insult if used in the wrong/right context.
I could be offended by having a word that denotes my culture banned.
Someone mentioned gay being hijacked, well that would be twice, the word used to mean happy, I have a 1960's newspaper somewhere about some astronaut feeling gay orbiting the earth, then today's meaning's... languages evolve.
Just my opinion.

His post, despite the title, is about censoring specific words. People do not ban the books of Mark Twain because of his racist message, but because of the words he used. In one instance that censorship had the "n" words replaced by "slave", because that's so much less offensive and suitable for public schooling. My post was relevant because the OP, and people like him, cannot separate actual racism from the racially derogatory vocabulary they find so offensive.
The low brow, thoughtless drivel people see here is provided by people that care less about anyone's ethnicity or physical appearance, and more about how people like you and the OP get so wound up about the words used.
The amusing bit, to me, is that I tend to agree with most of these "ban it!" people about a need for censorship on the forums. My reason, though, is because I expect a lack of censorship to be bad for business, but not because it's morally right or because people with racist dialogues must be suppressed.
Unconscious racism... I'd like to describe what I feel about that phrase, but I'd be censored ;) |

You can't just get up and censor the word Jew since its not derogatory in many contexts. That would be like censoring the word black.
Censorship isn't and never should be a tool to solve problems such as racism. If people cannot be civil with words then let them pay the proce and think about what theyve done. Preventing them from making the mistake ib first places doesnt teach them anything. |

There are more nations than the USA. You ever thought what that term meant internationally? In most of Africa and mainland Europe variations of the negro-word was used as identifying people as dark skin, and was used by black africans themselves as well. What the african-americans and white americans did with the word in a narrow timeframe before-/after is just a historic note, but insignificant (in this regard).
It didn't become synonymous with anything negative until the race debate hated up half a century ago in the USA, and unfortunately it became politically incorrect to use variations of that term even here in Europe. We still don't really understand why, as it never meant anything negative over here, and a big portion of our nations never did get involved in the slave trade either (even tho we had the worst culprits too!). shiptoastin' liek a baws |

Hmm, I won't bet against you. Either case, it's a nice subject for discussion. And I'm still curious what CCP founds their censorship on, I mean they still don't even allow us to post the name of the player that ousted T20.
I know certain countries (like the USA) have that kind of internal censorship in their companies (and in politics/military), but where I come from, you'd be called a fascist if you did, and be likened with *****, Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, Franco, or similar.
(take that with a pinch of salt, different cultures as we all come from etc, for all I know it could normal in Iceland with censorship, I mean, it is even in big nations like the USA, Russia, China etc) shiptoastin' liek a baws |
