Apple admits to using child labour for iPhones. 'Sloppy journalism'? 'Evil Apple'? Either way, I need to get myself one. |

Apart from big margins for journalistic error and irresponsibility.. It's pretty clearly stated that it wasn't apple that "used" or employed them.
It's also silly to summarize accusations past and present in a "news" article. If we did this all the time, our newspapers would be 90,000 pages a day, all full of corporate accusations.
Although I did find this funny:
Quote:
Last year, an employee at Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that is one of Apple's biggest suppliers, committed suicide after being accused of stealing a prototype for the iPhone.
That's some serious blade runner / dystopian corporate espionage stuff.

If you want to then say that Apple uses child labor then I'm sure most companies use child labor too.
Anyways children need to stop being lazy and work anyways!

Oddly enough, Yoko Ono seems to be Ok with the idea of child labour.
Here's a quote from an interview with her in Q Magazine Nov 2001 issue when asked if she regretted selling Instant Karma to Nike for use in an advert, given their alleged abuse of worker's rights.
"...People have a different take on sweatshops in this cultured and civilised society. If I lived in the third world, I'd be happy someone is giving me a job. Sometimes children have to work - if they don't they might be starving..."

It's a pretty safe bet that any corporation outsourcing to China or India are indirectly using child labour.

I went to a lecture about child labor recently. The woman giving the lecture was very much in favor of child labor. Her argument was that if the children don't work at factories they end up as prostitutes to foreign tourists.

Actually I agree with the yoko ono comment and the one about child prostetution. Sometimes children need to work to support the family with the extra income. Hell I was working by the time I was old enough to go out into the fields and cut down tobbaco and spike them on a pole then get them into the curing barn as quick as possible before the sun wilted them too much. I was 10 years old and all I have are fond memories of that time of my life out with my family bringing in the crop. But that was a caring family enviroment with a warm house and plentiful yummy home cooked food to eat 3 times a day. I guess the stigma(rightly so in too many cases) is that the children are being abused with overwork in unhealthy conditions for substandard pay. Now if that is the case then sure Apple needs to rethink its suppliers but if its just a case of kids doing an honest days work then its not really an issue and nothing in that article leads me to believe the 15 year olds were being unfairly treated.

I agree with child labor not being as bad as people think. I helped with construction work for a few years and having a few hundred dollars in one's pocket is a pleasant feeling. Although the article is clearly overreacting to the whole 15 year olds are working thing, the conditions in the factories don't seem to be all that nice. 60 hour + work weeks? Exposure to toxic chemicals? Lack of basic safety requirements? Lack of minimum wage payments?
Sounds like mistreatment to me, and Apple should deal with it harshly, or be dealt with harshly. Also, more proof that Apple is just as evil as any other corporation. At least other corps admit to being heartless entities focused solely on money and satisfaction of greed. _________________________________________________________________

There's a bit of a difference between someone under the age of majority in the West doing a few days labouring for a bit of extra cash (and from choice too; not because they, or their loved ones, will starve if they don't work), and the corporate enslavement of whole generations for profit.
Sadly it seems that disgusting poverty and dangerous conditions for everyone (not just kids) in other countries are deemed an acceptable price for cheap consumer goods, massive profits (for the already obscenely rich) and the demise of manafacturing industries in the West.
Alas, until severe penalties for participating in such anti-social behaviour are introduced, it will be more cost effective for companies to turn a blind eye to what is going on overseas and play the "well, we're as shocked as you are" card on the rare occassions that they get caught exploiting children and have to pay a token fine and do better at hiding their connection to what is essentially slavery next time.

I bet the children that know how to assemble iPhone electronics are brighter than your average michigan factory worker. I fail to see the issue.

I seriously doubt it is an "honest days work". Until it is proven that it is truly a "honest days work", I will assume that it is not. I do not buy Apple products any way. There are numerous reasons that many companies outsource so many jobs and child labor is only one of them.
How the Other Half Lives.
It documents what happened over 100+ years ago, but it is still a good read. It can be found, in what I believe to be complete format on other web sites.

You'd think they could lower their prices a bit if they're using cheap Asian slave labor.

The cheap asian labor build the products, but unfortunately does not provide the souls that are required to power the device. The Li+ is a cover. Li does not stand for lithium, it stands for Li, as in an asian guy with the last name Li. That's where all the cost from. Also, Steve Jobs is powered by the souls of innocents. Innocents are pricey. _________________________________________________________________
