I've had a thought. Why don't carriers have any kind of weapon capability?
While the usual response to this reasoning will be 'EVE isn't real life', carriers in EVE online still should have the ability to fit weaponry for the same reasons.
Carriers, should have the ability to fit several short range Medium or Large size guns for point defense usage.
It's my personal belief that in order to tackle a carrier or similar capital, I think that it should take a certain level of teamwork.
With the ability to use close range, rapid fire weapons, a handful of turrets will make it hard for a single ship to hold a carrier down. While many ships can outrun fighters and even light drones, a carrier is often helpless.
While it should be the duty of a carrier pilot to watch local, stay aligned .ect I still think that from several standpoints (Roleplaying, background, Rule-of-cool, Utility) it would be a beneficial change to carriers if they had these weapons.
What I'm suggesting, is that carriers would be given up to a total of 6 turret hardpoints.
In order to make it unable to fit turrets larger than those intended it would have a penalty to the powergrid cost of turrets.
This penalty would make mediums cost the same PG as large turrets, make large turrets cost the same PGrid as extra large turrets, and XL turrets probably un-fittable.
To go with the turrets, a carrier would have a 50% bonus to the firing speed of medium turrets relevant to it's race, and gain a 25% bonus to it's tracking.
The Ammarr would gain a cap reduction in adition to those bonuses, as would the Gallente and Caldari to a lesser extent.
The pilot of the carrier, could then fit 6 autos/pulse lasers/blasters to the ship, which with their firing speed and tracking would prove lethal in extremely short 'tackle' ranges.
This would make the tackling of carriers a more difficult and involving process, as if you were to tackle in frigates or interceptors, a group of ships with a logistics support may be required, and an alternative would be to use an arazu or other similar logistics ship to hold them down.
This prevents people from assigning one expendable ship to tackle a helpless carrier, while then rolling out to kill any defenders in a system, before returning to attack the carrier (which is being rendered helpless by a single ship.
While I think that this idea would need a substantial ammount of work to be done right, I would like to see carriers able to use a small bank of 'small' weapons in this manner.
This would also mean a boost to the ammount of high-slots available on carriers. While these ships could then theoretically tear through battleships at close range, it lacks the maneuverability (and usually lack of tackle) to destroy ships solo without suppor, and a battleship would have no problem moving out of range.
So let me summarise -
Carriers Get More High-Slots. (They do not get any more Powergrid)
Carriers get up to 6 Turret hardpoints.
Carriers get a penalty to turret powergrid costs, making turrets cost a lot of power to fit. (425mm Autocannon would cost 2000Mw)
Carriers get an extensive bonus to firing speed and tracking. (To make the weapons more efficient at hitting ships within their optimal)
Carriers get a penalty to falloff rendering falloff practically useless, but gain higher optimal. (To confine the range of the weapons without compromising usefulness.) (Optimal should usually be approx. 10km)
The result would make Carriers more imposing, without altering their solo performance. It would make them tougher to tackle with a few ships, but not make them invincible. It would make them more useful on the fleet battlefield as an anti-fighter/drone/Frigate platform.
Please when commenting, be sure to take into account the downsides that I attempted to work into this idea. While this is a buff overall for carriers, I think that it is not one that is overpowering, or floods over into a niche that should be filled by other ships.

i think a point defense system would work better for carriers as a single high slot module, that removes all the RR bonus's but damages any drones attacking it slowly over time, so....like 2o seconds to destroy a light drone, maybe it could be less effective the more drones are attacking it

Sounds good. I'd rather that carriers just had lower base powergrid though.

If you look at real world carrier fleets you'll find that there's a bunch of ships surrounding them that are specificly there to provide point defence, anti missile boats and suchlike.
I'd really like to see the addition of a defensive ship, something like a destroyer that's specificly tuned to automatickly destroy incoming missiles and drones. Rather than a point defence system mounted on a carrier.
Of course, that then really starts to favour turret weapons which is someone unbalancing in general

This is a great idea, But the mod should Not be for killing enemy drones because smartbombs do that already... This mod should be aimed to combat the Dictors Vagas and the small Ship that are tackling or bumping the cap

How long have you been a carrier pilot?
I've got a surprise for you; they are not that easy to tackle. The only carriers I have killed were absolute mess ups or pilots who don't have the SP to fly the things. Example: x-large shield boosters or MWD's.

I have, on many occasions been assigned to keep point on a carrier in only my Arazu. I was slow, with no tank, and I could still survive a carrier's attempts to get rid of me.
I have also been tackled in my carrier. I was bailed out by friends.

Carriers already have heavy neuts, artifically large smartbombs, and hordes of drones, what else do you want? ________________

Interesting idea, but not neccessary at all, really.
Like the previous posters said...there's plenty of already effective point-defense mechanisms. Even if it isn't the manned-guns approach of WW2 --> Modern day carriers, it still does fine.
Add in the utility stuff like carriers next to each other able to use thier ship maint. arrays or whatever to swap out lowslots with stabs if things get bad (try confirming you have 7+ points on each carrier in the middle of a fleet fight...it ain't easy) as well. Typically if the carrier pilots are smart, and unless you're 100% on the ball with all your tacklers being on the right ships...if you're tackling a group of carriers...a few are going to get lucky and escape...if they're smart. \o |

Now I am really curious how he tried to get rid of you? I promise you if I want to leave and an Arazu is the only thing keeping me there, I'm leaving.
As much as I would love to have 8 high slots on my Archon (trust me I wouldn't waste them with turrets), I feel like you are asking to change the mechanics to make things easier for you, where a capable carrier pilots have been able to handle themselves for quite some time now.

besides smartbombs, as multiple people already stated, you can fit energy neutralizer/point on your carrier and utilize fighter/light/medium drones for self defence. I think it should be enough, a carrier is a support vessel, which should not operate solo anyways.

You got your support fleet for point defense. Carriers are support ships and don't need to have turrets. ------ Make Lowsec useful! Vote in the CSM-Forum! |
