Simply put, it's an oversized iTouch with limited internet capability if you shell out for the $830 64GB 3G capable model. It doesn't run modified OS X, just the iTouch OS, which means it can't run normal software, and it can't multi-task. You can't even surf/read an iBook and listen to music on that thing. Not a good move by Apple in my mind, but it'll still sell like hotcakes I'm sure.
OMFG!!! $830 bucks for that thing?? LMAO!! I can build a bad arse quad core with 2 monitors for less than that and it will last me AT LEAST 4 years. How long would that POS last? A year maybe, before the next latest and greatest item arrives.
Man o man. It amazes me every time I see people spend their money on stupid things just cause they are "the latest and greatest" toys out in the market. I guess these are the same people who BUY isk and then turn around and buy the biggest BS or whatever with it and then still end up getting their arse handed to them, hahaha. Gessshhhh, makes ya wanna slap someone. A 10th of all I earn I keep for myself. |

You can of course.
E-reader advantages are they are much lighter, better readability (really) and significantly longer battery life (as in will work for days between charges rather than a few hours).

Apple iPad: no flash, no multitasking, no full OS, NO WAY!
If it were $250 I'd pick one up, but currently it's still just a simple web-browsing toy.

I love the idea of tablets and will get one once a windows/linux version comes out that can play hd vid, flash, read PDF, has no intrusive DRM, lets me play retro games, plays music, can hook up to an external HDD and generally does all the sensible stuff it should do.
The ability to play eve on it would rock hard

Apple's marketroid claims of a "magical and revolutionary device" is backfiring them on the iPad, as most people seem to be thinking about the device as some sort of netbook / tablet-PC competitor, but it obviously completely fails on that regard with its numerous limitations regarding OS, USB ports, expandability, flexibility and freedom in installing software, and so on and on.
The iPad is Apple's response to Amazon's Kindle and popularity of e-book readers, with the iBook store and deals with major publishing houses to get content on it - and it ought to be compared to that and considered on those terms, not to a "mini PC" of any sort. An e-book reader that lets you access mail, websites, and for which they've reused the iPhone's OS, thus leveraging the very extensive number of programs and games on the App store. Nothing more.

I thought people read books to get away from the strain on the eyes that is a computer screen. Do we really need more screen time?

I read books to get away from reality, and for enjoyment. I don't care if it is on a screen or on paper.
and meh battery life, I'm either not that far away from an outlet, or at an airport in which case I take a real paper book as I can read it on takeoff and while landing.

Obligatory ****** vid
I am also really dissapointed by this and as many others are saying I was expecting a very lightweight mac OS tablet that was integrated with the app store so it would have the best of the ipod and the mac.
How is this any different to an oversized iphone?

My prediction.
In six months time, Apple will announce that they're releasing an iPad with a built in camera. How innovative of them!
That way they'll get the early adopters to pay twice.
Then they'll make a model with a USB port, than then a few months after that an HDMI port will be added.
You get the idea.

Edited by: Magnus Nordir on 29/01/2010 12:56:14 Just more of Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field.
-Locked down -DRM laden -Windows/Mac support only, Mac only if you want any real work done on it -No flash/interpreted browser code other than what Apple wants you to have -You can only install software Apple lets you -And they can even disable that whenever they feel like it -No multitasking for appstore applications -DRM eBook format (seriously, what's wrong with PDF or plaintext?) -Integrated battery -Too big! What's with the gigantic unused edges? -Where am I supposed to put this thing when I'm moving around? Assuming I don't carry a goddamn purse?! -More expensive than netbooks, weaker hardware than netbooks, less convenient to work on than netbooks -Do they really expect people to type anything longer than a ****ing incomprehensible tweet on that onscreen keyboard?
I'm ashamed of having fallen for the pre-announce rumor hype for this piece of ****.
Of course, they'll still sell truckloads of them to Apple fanboys who couldn't care any less about signing their privacy and Software Freedoms away for the latest fashion accessory.

The silly part is that most of the flak I have seen around the net is from apple fanbois, and I consider myself at least pro-apple, and I totally hate its guts.
As an ereader its too expensive, bulky and badly designed, as a tablet pc its extremely limited and bricked to boot, as anything else it simply fails to deliver.
It would have been better for them to release an e-ink ereader with nifty features and whatnot than this piece of stuff that can do anything but nothing particularly good.
No really, what were they thinking?
Not even the ipod at launch was this crappy. ---
