How viable is solo ratting in 0.0 or lowsec? From the little experience I have, lowsec is so full of pirates that unless you are aligned and hovering your mouse at the warp button all the time it is very unlikely that you will not be attacked before you have earned enough money to replace the ship you're flying. And ratting in 0.0 requires you to transport any loot through a nullsec/lowsec gate that is very likely bubbled, correct?
What can you do in lowsec/nullsec solo if you are not a pirate?

Head to CVA, from experience you'll most likely be safer there than any other 0.0 Sov's that I know of. Preferabley be in a group and do not shoot at other players unless defending yourself.
Learn how to rat properly, preferabley just ask someone in CVA how they do it properly, make friends and keep an eye on local.

The above poster has pointed out something I did not know; that there is a correct way to blow up NPC belt pirates.
At about 1.5 to 2 months into the game I wanted to research my punisher BPO and the soonest available research slots were in low sec. I flew out to the station I was heading for and was surprised to find very few people. I decided to stay out there.
I started running level 1 missions and from the salvage I was getting I was able to make rigs for myself and with those and some implants from the LP store I was able to start taking out the cruisers in the belts. Soon I was able to take out the low level battleships once I got into an assault frigate, and soon I will have my tech 2 guns. Hopefully I will be able to break down those 850k+ isk bounty battleships when I fit those guns.
I would say if you find the right areas solo low sec is possible, but I can not lie. I have made some friends and a few pilots have been set red to identify the known bad guys more easily. Just remember to use your directional scanner and local is the only chat bar I keep open 100% if the time.
Good Luck!

Until recently, I didn't know what living in high sec was about.
I went from Tutorials > low sec and started with belt ratting.
Yeah, there's pirates and you do need to be aligned, but that's apart of the game and what made it fun for me. ________________________________________________ <--- My in-game me. |

This would be my advice about solo ratting for reasonable isk making.
Get yourself a stealthbomber.... (sounds crazy but works great)
Now this works best against serpentis rats as their blasters and rails are so easy to evade.
Fit your sb up as usual... however in the mid slots, fit a AB to keep sig radius low and transversal high, and 2 hardeners.
You can kite the serpentis rats in syndicate for example, very easily. You can kill the bs rats very fast, however be carefull of the frig rats.
Other than that, yea go to cva space, they operate a NRDS (Not Red Dont Shoot) policy.

Once you find a mice -1 trusec system with a lot of belts then it becomes very easy to pull in 30-35m isk an hour from bounties alone. Chaining is super important though. Just leave a frigate from the good spawn alive and it will keep coming back!

Yup, chaining is key. By keeping at least one ship (preferably a frigate) alive in the belt, you guarantee that the other ships will respawn eventually. If the spawn was a really good one (high-isk battleships), you will want to perform this chaining method. However, if the spawn was absolutely terrible (as in all battlecruisers and frigates) kill it off completely so that there's a chance of a battleship spawn joining the system. By chaining you improve your isk/hour rate substantially, and it's considered polite to the other ratters in the area too. Clear Skies Day of Darkness |

Many 0.0 systems are empty much of the time, and when they're not, all you will see is the odd stranger passing through as fast as he can.
The major consideration IMO is ammo. Lasers and Drones are best for ninja ratting for this reason. Use Lasers for Sansha, Blood and Serpentis; use Drones for any rats. One of the best general purpose ratting ships is the Ishtar for this reason.
If you want to keep it cheap and low-skill, it's hard to beat a Drake.

Show up in venal with cloaky hauler full of scourge, and a drake with a cloak, Cloaky hauler scouts drake there, Drake scouts officer loots back.
not quite solo, but who has one account anymore these days?
Ratting in lowsec is meh, doing level 4's in lowsec isnt so bad, if gated mission, just lower range on 360, usualy just removing the 2 works... if anything shows up, you'll know who they are after. Level 5's used to be pretty win, but looks like they've been getting popular lately. |
