So after almost 10 years of wanting so badly to be able to play EVE online, I finally have a computer that can run it fairly well (MBP 2011). Sure, it isn't as pretty as it could be, but I don't really care - the game runs very well, doesn't crash, and still looks beautiful. Strangely, what made me think about EVE again is the impending release of Dust 514 on PS3. For the last 5 years, I've done almost 100% of my gaming on PS3, so when I heard about Dust 514, I remembered EVE, and realized I had a computer that could actually run it now.
Needless to say, I am so excited to finally be a part of this community. I played a few tutorial missions last night and had an awesome time - even the chat channels were full of helpful, courteous people.
So I guess my question is, besides playing through the tutorial missions, what are some cool things to do for a first-timer. Any amazing-looking space phenomena? Anywhere to find good corporations for a beginner? Any (relatively) easy ways to make my first million? Anywhere I can go to fill myself in on the backstory and history of the EVE universe? |

1.) Amazing looking space, look at your backgrounds and that is about as good as it will be (different colours for different factions), maybe some nice gas clouds in some missions.
2.) http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/ - Great chart of what you can do in EVE.
3.) Corporation finding, use forums / in game search tool / in game channel: Recruitment. But do your research.
4.) Missions or mining are the easiest way to make money. But if you think in EVE you can make quick money for little effort, you should reconsider your thinking.
5.) There are couple of places to read up with the Lore of EVE. Don't know them cause I can't be bothered with them personally. Inject your skillbook before you leave the station. Hello and welcome to EVE! Always nice to have new people around.
Now a word of caution if I may: don't just blindly join the first corp that is offering to recruit noobs, you might find yourself in the company of idiots and griefers that get their pleasure from shooting new corp mates. Thoroughly check your potential new corp, see if they have an active out-of-game community (eg. forums), how long they've been around, whether anyone actively complained about them on the EVE forums etc. From what I hear, a good place to get started is EVE University but I suppose it might depend a little on what you want to do in game.
For the backstory I would suggest reading (some of) the chronicles plus there used to be tons of speculation and mystery on things like the "sleepers" in wormholes, not sure what the state of that is, though.
All that said, I'm looking forward to meeting you in space. darmwand Repossession Agent http://www.repo-corp.net/ Recruitment is OPEN |

My god, it is so nice to see positive people on the forums this place always gets hostile for a bit after a expansion.
The things a beginner can do are the same things a eve vet can do, just not as well, if you can fit a Micro warp drive a web and a jammer any fleet in their right mind will take you,
the larger ships in eve have a hard time stopping ships from running away so they need people in small fast ships to pin them down so the heavy guns can go to work.
i would suggest having a stable income source and if you want t do PVP, Missions are your best choice they have alot of the same skills required in pvp.
That being said this game is a true sandbox, anything that you can think of can make money just try to ind the highest ISK for time option.
And dont be worried about not being able to catch up to any EVE vets as far as PVP or PVE, Any pilot can go head to head with a vet in about 6 months of training. |

That's why there is the part called General Discussion.

Welcome!
Speaking of Dust 514 did you receive a dust beta invite? If so Ill be shooting you in the face soon.
Figure out how you want to make isk in the game and then get into pvp. PVP is the most exciting thing you can do in eve.
As a newer player pvp options may be slightly limited as you will need to focus on maxing your core skills out. Once you get that squared away and can use tech II guns on your frigate you'll be on a more even footing with other frig pilots.
If you want to try a truly crazy profession you could attempt clandestine salvaging. This entails getting a frig with a cloak and a bunch of salvagers. Then you check the map for big engagements in low or null sec, then you try to scour the battlefield of tech II wrecks which will give you tech II salvage which is very valuable.
You will need to learn how to avoid/escape bubbles, use tech II salvagers, and have a running knowledge of the names of tech II ships.
Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.comI Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers. |

- EVE university (at least read their guides), there's plenty of corps looking for noobs just try them out until you find one you like.
- Do the tutorial missions, a million is nothing. Mid-game you should be netting 20mil an hour running missions of mining.
- EVE chronicles and the novels EVE: The Empyrean Age (how they explained adding factional warfare) and EVE: The Burning Life (lots of fluff, mostly about NPC pirates)

I would also recommend doing the Sisters of EVE epic arc, it gives some decent ISK for a new player (at least that's how I remember it) and will allow you to get more familiar with the game mechanics. Plus it's an epic story arc. darmwand Repossession Agent http://www.repo-corp.net/ Recruitment is OPEN |

Thanks everyone for all your responses, all very good advice. Today I upgraded my trial and i'm pretty convince at this point that I'll be playing EVE for a long time, each day I play it I enjoy it a bit more haha. Anyways, like many of you suggested, I ended up joining EVE University, which has been an excellent experience so far, I've been taught how to fit my ship effectively, I've been attending classes which have been helping me master all the basics, etc, etc.
Still haven't ventured into PvP yet, but that is my primary goal when it comes to EVE. Ultimately I want PvP to be my main focus down the road. Ive saved up a good 30 million so I'm hoping I can start some basic tackler PvP stuff. Thanks again for the responses and the advice. I'll probably see you guys around. |

Heh, I hope you enjoy massive blob of ECM and undock humping because this is how Eve Uni does pvp. How do they call it, "deny aggressor of fight enjoyment"? Or something like that :)
But anyway, welcome to Eve. I expected whine thread about patches breaking your game - which always amazes me because how da f*ck I never got such problems? - but you just seem to be excited and ready for new experiences. So I will give you only one advice, ok two actually: 1. Don't let anybody to tell you how you should play your game. It's your money and your pixels, do what you want with them and rest can go f*ck themselves if they don't like it. 2. Only stupid questions are those not asked (I think I stole it from J'Poll but it's true) BUT for the love of whatever you cherish in this world at least try to do some research by yourself before you create new thread about best pvp ship, best way of money making, best anything, etc. Lot of things are already covered on those forums, use search buttan, please.
And one more thing: there is no best ship in Eve, there are only ships that are more or less suitable in given circumstances. Although some say best ship is Friendship
